1 y sigma No 3/2009 World insurance in 2008 May 15, 2003 life premiums fall in the industrialised countries strong growth in the emerging markets Statistical appendix, updated December Changes in data since May Buying data 4 Legend to tables Statistical appendix 5 Insurance premium volume by region and organisation 6 Total insurance premium volume 8 Life insurance premium volume 10 Non-life insurance premium volume 12 Insurance density: premiums per capita in USD 13 Insurance penetration: premiums as a % of GDP 14 Macroeconomic indicators in 2008

2 Statistical Appendix Changes in data since May 2009 Update of insurance market figures confirms main findings of the sigma The data appendix has been updated to incorporate the latest available data. For most markets, definitive or at least provisional figures are now available. The main findings of the sigma have been confirmed: Global premium volume in 2008, adjusted for inflation, declined in real terms mainly because of a sharp fall in the sale of unit-linked and single premium life insurance products in the industrialised countries. Non-life insurance remained profitable, despite falling premium volumes Growth continued to be strong in the emerging markets, but at a slower pace. Compared to the data compiled for the sigma in May, global life insurance premium volume for 2008 was revised by -2.2% (USD 54bn) and non-life insurance premiums by +0.1% (USD 2bn). UK life insurance data revision due to underestimated decline in institutional pension fund business The large revision is mainly due to the UK life sector, which is difficult to estimate due to the high volatility of the large single premium institutional pension fund business which accounted for 46% of the UK life premiums in While data on the first three quarters published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) suggested a -31% (inflation-adjusted) decline of institutional pension fund business, final data for the full year from the British Associations of Insurers (ABI) figures show a decline of 53%. For the rest of the regions the changes were minor: Non-life sector of Western Europe performed better than estimated (-0.3% decline vs -1.1% in May) due to less severe decline in the UK (-1.3% vs - 3.2%) and stronger growth in the Netherlands and France than estimated. In the emerging markets growth of life insurance was slightly weaker than estimated (13.6% vs 14.6%) due to downward revisions mainly in Mexico and South Africa. Swiss Re, sigma No 3/2009, data update December
