Pöttinger s test centre The Pöttinger test centre, situated in the Technology and Innovation Centre (TIZ), is the cornerstone of Pöttinger s quality assurance system. The centre has been testing Pöttinger machines for their quality and practical performance under realistic operating conditions for more than fi ve years. Research, development and implementation go hand in hand. The test centre is one of the most modern in the agricultural sector worldwide and has an excellent reputation. As a result, many international manufacturers send their products here to be tested for their practical performance, including Airbus and many renowned car manufacturers. The tests carried out at the centre save time and money: up to 75% compared to fi eld triensures maximum machine reliability als. The performance of a machine over its entire service life, for example, can be ascertained in a short period of time, guaranteeing optimum machine reliability in practical situations. The NOVACAT 301 alpha-motion front mower is really brilliant at following undulations in the fi eld. And the NOVACAT 402 is the ideal match for the rear end. Pöttinger cutter bars: Austrian engineering For perfect mowing quality Quality made in Grieskirchen/Austria First-class cutting quality, low drag resistance and stability are the trademarks of Pöttinger mowers. Engineering details and ingenious machine functions contribute signifi cantly to harvesting quality forage. The cutter bar is a key component on disc mowers. Disc mowers have a long tradition at Pöttinger. NOVACAT disc mower cutter bars are developed and built at company headquarters in Grieskirchen a quality product made entirely in Austria. Pöttinger based the design on developments that have been made in drum-type mowers. The effect achieved by the paddles on the drum mower, increasing crop fl ow and lowering the drag resistance of the mower, is achieved by the contoured shape of the conical discs on the disc mower. The crop really fl ows through the mower over the smooth profi led discs. Tractor power requirement is lower as a result; dynamic crop fl ow means the mower is operating at peak effi ciency all the time. The entire cutter bar is welded and 100 percent airtight as a result. The cutter bar plates are laser-cut, shaped and then welded together using two-arm robotic technology. After each cutter bar has been welded it is subjected to a dimensional check before being given approval. The mower discs are driven by gear wheels that are almost the same diameter (44 and 35 teeth). This means that at least two teeth are always in contact to guarantee the lowest stress to the teeth and the highest reliability. The gear wheels are hardened, machined and fi tted with durable twin-race angular contact ball bearings. The gear wheels and bearing fl anges are pre-assembled and subjected to a visual cleanliness check before being installed in the cutter bar. After all gear wheels and fl anges have been installed, the cutter bar is powder coated for best paint quality and durability. During fi nal assembly all mower discs and drums are fi tted and a fi lling of oil provided. After assembly has been completed each cutter bar is put through a test run to measure vibration and noise. It is not until all the checks have been performed and the cutter bar approved by a specialist that it can be forwarded to the mower assembly line. The sward is protected through the design of the smooth underside of the cutter bar, rounded skids at both ends and no sharp edges. MOWERS 11

13 NOVACAT 352 Proven lower linkage arm The central element on these two models is the hydraulic lower linkage arm. This ensures the headstock is always in the correct horizontal position. Hitching up is easier, the correct weight alleviation is always ensured and high ground clearance is provided at headlands and during road transport. At the same time the cutter bar is secured using a stabilizer cylinder. In order to guarantee optimum utilisation of effective working width, the NOVACAT 352 mower unit can be mounted at two different positions on the boom. The durability of the tines is increased signifi cantly. The integral protection against tine loss reduces the risk of broken parts becoming caught up in the harvesting process. We have been pleasantly surprised by our new HIT T. Whereas in the past we could only ted against the direction of mowing to achieve decent distribution, with the HIT T we can drive in all directions, and much faster too. Our 72 hp tractor pulls the tedder with ease. The new DynaTec rotors deliver excellent work and are very effective at preventing the crop from wrapping. 16 MAGAZINE 2013

With this new addition, Pöttinger is incorporating the trend towards modernisation in the highly specialised Alpine area. Pöttinger has succeeded in developing a tedder that still weighs just 540/595 lbs / 245/270 kg despite having a working width of 14.4' / 4.4 m. The highlights of this new specialist tedder are the same as that of the previous machine with its lightweight design. The profiled pipe frame, aluminium guard brackets and spring steel tine arms keep the weight low whilst also ensuring the strength required. The rigid headstock places the weight very close to the tractor. The trailed headstock version can be fitted with stabiliser struts if needed. A low-slung lower link coupling point ensures that there is always sufficient lifting clearance. There are three top link positions, one of which is slotted for use with a jockey wheel. Transportation is possible with the top link fixed in place. A flap is implemented as transport interlock. The rotors have an ideal diameter of 4.7' / 1.44 m. Excellent distribution quality is guaranteed thanks to the five tine arms per rotor and the offset length of the tines. The depth is adjusted centrally with coulter pressure applied hydraulically between 88 and 265 lbs / 40 and 120 kg. The maintenance-free rubber mounting elements provide optimum freedom of movement for each unit. Gaëtan de Vulder, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France I use a TERRASEM C4 on my 150-hectare farm. I noticed that even with only one pass with the cultivator the drilling quality remained consistent, and so did yield.
