7 Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd. 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 General This is the instruction manual for the Pole-mount Deployment Kit designed for use with the Kongsberg Mesotech Sonar Heads. The purpose of the manual is to present the information needed to assemble, deploy and maintain the Pole-mount hardware. The tools required to: install, remove or replace any assemblies and parts are included in the kit. Each mechanical assembly is described and illustrated. The manual also includes procedures for disassembly and reassembly of the replaceable items. This manual does not give a detailed description of the peripheral devices. For information about these items, refer to the applicable manufacturer s documentation. 1.2 System Description The Pole-mount Deployment System is designed to assist in the deployment of a profiling system from a survey vessel of opportunity. The Sonar Head can be deployed with or without the rotator option and the mounting flange has been designed to accommodate both options. The pole mount kit components are supplied in a hard case for easy storage and transportation while the mast sections are supplied in a carry bag. NOTE: The mast length is approximately 135 inches (3.40 m) when all three sections are installed. Additional mast sections P/N can be purchased if longer masts are required. NOTE: The sonar head mounting brackets are sold separately because they differ in size depending on the head that is used. NOTE: The protection cage assembly from the KML tripod can be attached to the pole mount. The cage P/N can be purchased as an option if the user does not have a KML-supplied tripod /2.0 1

8 Pole-mount Deployment System - Installation Manual 2 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Assembly of the Pole mount deployment system should be done near or on the vessel that will be used to deploy the Sonar Head. All the tools required to assemble the Pole-mount Deployment System are included in the shipping case. This document provides assembly instructions including some images to illustrate some of the steps required for assembly and deployment. The assembly instructions should be used in conjunction with the parts information and assembly drawings to minimize the potential for errors. NOTE: We recommend a review of the assembly drawings and parts list included at the end of this document prior to starting the assembly process. Assembly of the pole mount deployment system requires between minutes, from unpacking the case to complete assembly. Two persons are required for installation and deployment. WARNING: Marine grade grease or anti-seize compound must be applied to all fasteners during assembly, particularly to the threads of the mast sections. 2.1 Installation Requirements 2.2 Unpacking Mounting Location of the Sonar Head The location on the pole mounted profiling system should be at the front of the survey vessel to minimize the turbulence around the sonar transducer. Sonar Head Cage Installation When the protection cage is used for deployment the sonar head must be installed in the deployment cage before attaching the cage to the pole mount deployment system. The pole mount deployment kit is packed in both a rigid shipping case and duffle bag. All the hardware required for assembling the pole mount deployment kit is contained in both these containers /2.0

10 Pole-mount Deployment System - Installation Manual 2.3 Preliminary assembly steps The pole mount deployment system is partially disassembled to facilitate packing in the shipping case. In preparation for the pole mount installation some preliminary assembly is required for some of the components of the pole mount deployment kit. WARNING: Marine grade grease or anti-seize compound must be applied to all fasteners during assembly, particularly to the threads of the mast sections Hull Mount Bracket Assembly Install the Turnbuckle assembly to the Hull Mount Plate (if not already installed) Install the Hull Mount Plate to the Hull Mount Bracket (if not already installed) Install the Hull Mount Clamp to the Hull Mount Bracket (if not already installed /2.0

11 Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd. NOTE: Do not attach the loose end of the turnbuckle assembly to the Hull Mount Bracket at this time. This part will be assembled after the pole mount assembly is deployed and the Hull Mount Bracket is attached to the boat gunnel Preliminary Mast Assembly Position the Mast Clamp on the Hull Mount Plate and secure them together shown in the following picture using the supplied Pivot Bolt. Use the supplied hardware to secure the ends of the two curved mounting slots /2.0 5

12 Pole-mount Deployment System - Installation Manual Slide the Top Mast Section through the Mast Clamp. Install the Stop collar. Install the GPS bracket on the top side of the Top Mast Section and secure with the provided fasteners /2.0

Cage & Sonar Head Mounted to Pole Flange. 2.4 Pole-mount Assembly Cable Installation NOTE: The dry-mate cable connector must be inserted through each mast section before assembling the pole. Run the sonar cable through the GPS Bracket and the Top Mast Section /2.0

15 Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd. Run the sonar cable through the Middle Mast Section(s). Run the sonar cable through the Bottom Mast Section and bring the cable out through the side wall hole. Connect the cable connector to the Sonar Head Pole Assembly NOTE: Take precautions to ensure the cable is not damaged during installation and deployment. Refer to the cable specifications for minimum bend radius, rated peak tension load and other mechanical information. Assemble the Top and Middle Mast Sections and secure them with the supplied set screw(s). Assemble the Middle and Bottom Mast Sections and secure them with the supplied set screw /2.0 9

16 Pole-mount Deployment System - Installation Manual Insert the Sonar Cage Flange and secure using the supplied fasteners. Depending on the deployment configuration attach the Sonar Cage Stand, or the Rotator or the Sonar head to the Sonar Cage Flange using the appropriate hardware. 2.5 Deployment Pole deployment Slide the Mast Clamp assembly on the pole assembly down to the Sonar Cage Assembly location on the Bottom Mast Section /2.0

17 Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd. Lift the Pole-mount Assembly and position the Hull Mount Bracket on the ship s gunnel. Secure the hull mount bracket using the supplied C clamps or bolts, as applicable. For a permanent installation it is recommended to drill mounting holes in the Hull Mount Bracket for bolting to the vessel or operational platform. Pivot the pole assembly and lower the sonar as necessary. CAUTION: Pivot the mast horizontal, or retract the mast until the sonar head is out of the water, while in transit or moving. Always attach a safety line to the Pole-mount Deployment System and tie off to a secure point on the vessel or operational platform. NOTE: Use the safety through holes and the safety bolt provided in the tool kit to limit the pole travel to the desired location. Attach the loose end of the turnbuckle to the Hull Mount Bracket using the Spring clip (as illustrated) /2.0 11

18 Pole-mount Deployment System - Installation Manual Spring Clip used to secure Turnbuckle Pole mount alignment If pitch adjustment is required loosen the screws attaching the Mast Clamp to the Hull Mount Plate and move two opposing screws to the center location to allow pitching in the right direction. Pivot the pole to compensate for any pitch and tighten the Cam lock to secure the Mast Clamp /2.0

19 Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd. Adjust the turnbuckle to pivot the pole to compensate for any roll. Rotate the pole to align the cage to the heading of the boat then tighten the Mast Clamp bolts to secure the pole at the desired location and orientation. Install the GPS unit on the GPS bracket and re-orientate the bracket if necessary. Tighten the GPS Bracket bolts to secure the bracket in the desired orientation. Measure & record offsets between GPS and the sonar head s transducer face. The Deployment unit should now be ready for use /2.0 13

20 Pole-mount Deployment System - Installation Manual 3 REPACKAGING THE POLE-MOUNT KIT The pole mount deployment kit must be partially disassembled after being used so it can fit into the shipping case and duffle bag. All the fasteners should be loosely attached to the corresponding mounting locations after disassembly to make it easier to locate the appropriate fasteners at the next deployment.
