"Renewing your Driver's License at a Police Station" "Renewing your Driver's License at The Driver s License Testing and Issuing Center (FUTAMATAGAWA)" Notes for those who can apply for renewal at the designated police stations providing the same day renewal service: See the table below: * Even if you reside in the jurisdiction of one of the six (6) designated Police Stations that provide same day renewal service (Kawasaki, Yokosuka,Kamakura, Odawara, Ebina, and Sagamihara-kita Police Stations), your license will not be issued on the same day if you must attend the General Driver s Lecture, Traffic Offender s Lecture, or First-time Renewal Driver s Lecture. A Renewal Notice (a post card) Application form for renewal (you can get the form at the police station) A Resident Card with valid permission of residence, Certificate for Special Permanent Resident, etc. (Foreign Applicants Only) A Certificate of Attendance, if you have already attended any of the following lectures: Senior Drivers Lecture Optional Senior Drivers Lecture Optional Drivers Lecture Driver Education Course (The Certificate of Attendance for the Senior Driver s Lecture is valid only if issued within the last 3 months, while those for the Optional Senior Driver s Lecture, Optional Driver s Lecture, or Driver Education Course are valid only if issued within the last 6 months.) (You must complete these lectures before taking the renewal procedure.)

3 If you renew your driver s license while your license has been suspended, you will need to bring with you one (1) photo; - 3.0cm 2.4cm - taken within the last 6 months - full-face with your head uncovered, one third of your upper body with solid color background If you change information on your driver s license together with renewal, you will need to provide a document to confirm the change. 4 PROCEDURE Note: Setting PIN Code You will need two (2) sets of four (4) digit numbers, eight (8) digits in total, as your PIN code for the procedure. Prepare the secret numbers of your choice beforehand. Put your driver s license into the application device at the reception area. After setting your PIN code, the application form will be issued. Attending your lecture course: * Those who must attend the Safe Driver s Lecture can attend the lecture on the same day. * Those who must attend the General Driver s Lecture, Traffic Offender s Lecture, or First-time Renewal Driver s Lecture must attend their lecture on the designated day. 5 * If you have already attended the Safe Driver s Lecture, Senior Driver s Lecture, or if you are exempted from any lecture for renewal or from the Senior Driver s Lecture, you will receive your renewed license on the same day. * Those who must attend the General Driver s Lecture, Traffic Offender s Lecture, or First-time Renewal Driver s Lecture will receive their renewed license on the day they attend their lectures. The renewal period is from one month before your birthday up to one month after your birthday in the renewal year. If the last day of the renewal period falls on Saturday, Sunday, National holidays, or Year-End and New Year holidays, you can take the renewal procedure on the next business day. ("One month before your birthday or one month after your birthday" means the same date of your birthday of the previous or the following month.) Renewal in advance If you are unable to renew your license during the ordinary renewal period due to unavoidable reasons (such as going abroad, being in the hospital, having a baby, etc.), you can take it in advance. You will need to bring a document that states the reason (such as a passport, medical certificate, a maternal & child health handbook, etc.) in addition to the documents above. If you renew your driver s license in advance, the period of validity for your renewed license will be shorter than that of a license issued under the ordinary procedure. Applications may be submitted between 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM, and between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Depending on the number of people attending the lecture course, you may be requested to come another day.
