FL2D August 2015 Newsletter of Harbor City Wings Melbourne, FL Gold Wing Road Riders Association Hello again. What an interesting July we had. Twenty-four of you came to the CPR class. It sure made us proud as it made the instructors travel worthwhile. Any way thanks to all who participated. Harry and I attended the Anderson, South Carolina rally. The venue was held in a huge air conditioned community center. We went in the car as the bike was in the hospital. (Nothing serious just a check up and small repair) The weather was a little warm but nothing to really yell about. It was our understanding that about 200 to 250 attended. I am sorry to say only about 12 people from Florida was there. We had nice sit down dinner on Thursday night and then Harry and I judged the costume parade. Let me tell you that is harder then it seems as so many costumes were fantastic. By the way the theme was Pirates of the Carolina. They had a drawing each day and guess who won the first one.yours truly. Meetings - First Tuesday of each month. Currently meeting at : MeMaws on Babcock in Palm Bay. Eat, Chat and Mingle at 6:00pm. 2 Gold Wing proud Harry and Lynn Chapter Directors Friday, Harry and I rode down to the old section of Anderson. That was really interesting. But anyway we had a nice time and hope next time to see more FL2D there. Don't forget to bring the back packs and school supplies to the August meeting. Every little bit helps. There was a time when the Co-Rider was the first to arrive at the scene. Later, they elected to sit in back where their instructions would be easier to hear. 2

Ride Coordinator Have you noticed how much the world is changing?????? And I don't mean a slow change, it is changing faster and faster. Just watch the news each night you will be amazed. Not only that but sometimes I feel like it is passing me by. I think we all hate change to a certain degree. But if there were no change, then we would all be sitting naked around a fire, (the richer ones would be wearing fur pieces) in a cave waiting for the dinosaurs to leave us alone. Time has changed and will keep on marching on so all we can do is enjoy the change and the ride. Rides, Rides, and more rides. It is so good to see how many of you get up, get out and join us for the rides. Not letting change or anything else hold you back. Our turnout at Bob Evans was terrrrrrrfic. I'm sorry we had to cancel the breakfast ride to the fish camp.but there again change had to be made as Mother nature was not in the mood for a ride that day. Don't worry we will re-schedule. Right now I'm looking at the 16th of August.. Same time 8:30, leaving county line. Keep your fingers crossed that there won't be any CHANGE. Hey guys, if you read our opening chapter directors letter, you saw that Harry and I attended the Anderson, South Carolina rally. But did you also notice that we mentioned about seeing the old part of that town?????? The point being is that when you attend a rally, you are NOT OBLIGATED TO SPEND YOUR WHOLE TIME AT THAT RALLY. No sir, get on that bike and go for a local ride. See some of their sights. Learn a little bit about their area. It really can get very interesting sometimes. Just thought I'd mention that little fact and maybe you will attend any up coming rallies. Oh, by the way the next one is Wing Ding held in Huntsville, Alabama on September 1,2,3,4,5. Harry and I are planning on going. I sure hope to see more teal shirts there. Even if you make the trip in a car. I don't care if you go by camel, I would be just as proud to see you there. So come put a little change in your life and make a resolution to attend more rallies from now on. O.K????? o.k. Ride safe and remember..watch out for the guy behind the guy in front of you Because that is you and we want to keep you around. Lynn Anderson RIDE COORDINATOR 5

Rider Education Harry and Lynn Anderson Achieve Master Tour Rider and Co-rider Levels At the July Chapter Gathering, Harry and Lynn Anderson were honored when presented with their Master Tour Rider and Co-rider patches. The Master Tour Rider/Co-rider achievement represents the pinnacle of the Rider Education Levels Program. Harry and Lynn join an elite group, which in FL2-D includes Charlie and Joanne Davies, Deb Dalton, and William Harris. At an even higher level within the Masters, Mike and Pat Duquette are Grand Master Tour Riders/Coriders because they have been Master Tour Riders for over 10 consecutive years. Please consider a public and/or private pat on the back for all these Master Tour Riders/Co-riders in our chapter. For more information on the GWRRA Rider Education Levels program, go to this web page. For more information on the Rider Education Program in our FL2-D chapter, go to this web page. 6

Trike Riders Course (TRC) Currently, we have about 15 trikes in the chapter. A Trike Riders Course (TRC) will be conducted on August 9 at Eustis, FL starting at 8:30 a.m. The TRC helps trike riders understand how their vehicle will react in a variety of street/road situations and then test those assumptions on the range. This course has both a classroom and range component. Portions of this TRC may be 2-Up based on the experience level and capability of the riders. In some exercises instructors may require riders to ride 1-Up for at least the first attempt in early exercises. If you are considering attending this TRC, then contact John Cain jcain16@fit.edu for details. Request for Suggested Rider Education Topics and Events As the new Chapter Educator, I would welcome your suggestions on future Rider Ed topics and events. For example, Susan Adkins has requested a co-rider seminar. A simple social meeting to view and discuss the Co-rider video is one possibility or a full blown sanctioned Co-rider Course is another. I can investigate the possibilities and propose a plan to meet your needs. Here are some example rider courses and skill events, some of which are above the chapter s ability to host, but who knows? 16 A Wing and a Train - Trip that is! Ron and Susan Atkins - An Auto Train Experience You ve heard about the Amtrak Auto Train. You ve looked it up on the Internet and have found out more about it, but you can t find anyone who has actually taken their Goldwing from Sanford, FL, to Lorton, VA. Susan and I took the plunge and left on July 3 rd and returned on July 10 th, roundtrip on the Auto Train. In between we rode Skyline Drive twice, visited Mayberry (Mt. Airy, NC), and rode about 100 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Auto Train will transport your two- or three-wheeled Goldwing just fine, either way or round-trip. Amtrak has these four tired, metal platforms with motorcycle wheel chocks and tie-down straps. A trike will use the entire motorcycle platform by itself or they can fit two, two-wheeled bikes side-by-side. You might be able to get two Goldwings on a single platform but in my estimation it might be a tight fit. On the trip north, there were 450+ passengers, 170+ vehicles, and 1 motorcycle. On the trip south, our Goldwing shared the motorcycle platform with a Harley (it looked sorta puny side-by-side like that). You should arrive at the Sanford, FL, Amtrak station no earlier than 1130AM. We arrived at about 1140AM and there was already a line of 10 cars waiting at the station entry booth (Amtrak was running a little behind that day). We pulled into line and shut of the engine and took off our helmets, but we were in full sun and it was hot. A nice lady who works for the Amtrak logistics contractor walked up to us and said You didn t hear it from me, but a motorcycle can drive in the exit lane and go straight to the motorcycle loading platform which is exactly what we did. Apparently, the station entry booth is where they give your car a magnetic sign with a 3-digit number which they affix to your driver s side door. As each car is unloaded at your destination, an Amtrak employee calls out on the station s PA system the number on the magnetic sign. You can wait inside or outside the station for your car. Oh, and if you don t take your Goldwing but your car instead, we recommend paying for the premium unloading those come off first. You may have to wait up to 1 ½ hours for a car if yours is last off the Auto Train. $25 each way for the premium unloading seems like a bargain to us after a 17 hour train trip (4PM to 9AM). Going in the exit, so to speak, posed no problems whatsoever when we did this in Sanford but when we did the same in Lorton, an Amtrak ticket agent came out to talk to us, nearly running, worried that we were going to try to load the bike onto the motorcycle platform ourselves. We weren t planning to. I told him so, and he walked back to the terminal much relieved. 16

At both ramps, I stopped the bike at the foot of the loading ramp and turned off the engine. In Sanford, the loading ramp is concrete which is nice for sure footing when going up or backing down the ramp s incline. In Lorton, the loading ramp is wood which had very worn friction pads and did not offer good footing (especially when wet I ll get into that later). Both ramps are only about tall and have a large, flat area on top so your bike is sitting level and you don t have to hold the brake a nice touch. With our bike stopped at the foot of the ramp, Susan and I unloaded a few bags from the trunk (e.g. fresh shirt, socks, undies, a few toiletries, and reading material, helmet bags). A big caution here once they load your bike (or car) there s no way to retrieve anything so better make sure you get what you need before leaving it to the Amtrak people. About the time we finished unloading what we needed for the train trip, an Amtrak employee (let s call him the Loader) showed up at the ramp and began readying the motorcycle platform basically untangling the straps. While the Loader was doing that, I started the bike, picked which side (left, in my case) of the motorcycle platform I wanted our bike to sit, and drove up the concrete ramp just short of the motorcycle platform. When the Loader was ready, he motioned for me to pull onto the motorcycle platform. There are three channels cut into the motorcycle platform, each of which leads to a wheel chock. The channels are barely wide enough for our Dunlop Elite 3 s, but they fit. The Loader is standing on the ground in front of your wheel chock and helps guide your bike into position (the chock has a flip plate to hold your front tire in place). Stay on your bike at that point because they begin the strap-down process. By the way, make sure your bike is in neutral chocks and straps still allow the bike to move front to back a smidge and you don t want your transmission taking that beating for 17 hours. Also, a safety tip I read online don t hang your helmets or anything that can sway on your bike. One guy online hung his helmets on the trunk hooks and when the bike was unloaded, he had some brand, new wear marks on his paint. Ouch! During strap down, don t be shy about telling the Loader Whoa! I had already put my own soft straps around my triple-tree (good idea or not? I ll explain more later). The Loader first wraps a strap around your front wheel and the wheel chock and straps it tight. Easy-peasy. But, then the Loader starts working on the triple-tree straps. Now, the motorcycle platforms have a railing on each side that s close in height to your handle-bars (safety?). The Loader started ratcheting my left triple-tree strap down and was intent on getting 17

some compression of my front forks. His efforts started to tilt my bike to the left and started to bring my mirror in close proximity of the railing. That s when I shouted Whoa! The bike s getting too close to the railing The Loader stopped ratcheting and started ratcheting the right triple-tree strap, which had the effect of pulling the bike into a more vertical position. Again, he applied compression on the front forks. When the loader was done strapping down the bike, I got off. I then walked to the back of the bike and lowered the antenna. Seems prudent. They then take another strap, run it through your back tire, hopefully to keep the bike from moving forward. Online, some forums talk about how the loaders will even give you a towel (or whatever) to put between your front fender and the tie-down straps. I asked for one since the right triple-tree strap was against my fender. The Loader looked around, found a rag on another motorcycle platform, shook off as much crud as he could, and jammed it between my fender and the strap. I examined it after he was done and it looked OK so I let it go. On the return trip, I provided my own towels, thank you very much. Another online post said that they unload motorcycle s first. That s just flat wrong. At both destinations we had to wait about minutes to see the motorcycle platform with our bike come around the corner. Bikes are also loaded near last so if you forgot that last little something, you can run out to get it. Don t forget to lock your bike and take your keys. They don t need the keys. Now, let s move to the train itself. They start boarding at 230PM. If you do the math, if you arrive at 1130AM, that s a long wait at the station. One advantage of arriving early is that you re one of the first to get your seat assignments, rooms, etc. In Sanford, we were early in line and Susan asked the Amtrak agent where would she sit and she gave us the last coach car before the sleeper cars and the seats just fore of the train car s interior steps which are in the middle of the car (front to back). These seats turned out to be great seats. If you re in a coach car between the last coach car and the first couple of cars which hold the restaurant and lounge, you re going to have a stream of traffic going to-and-fro all night. Also, if you re in one of the front coach cars, you get to be closer the train whistle which, by law, has to sound at every crossing, even if you re in BF Redneckville. On the trip from Lorton to Sanford, I d swear that the train engineer blew the whistle 18

every time he saw a tree! If you re at either end of the car, there are automatic doors. You push a big green button on the door and it whirs to the right to let you pass through. You cross through no-man s land (where the two cars connect there are floor plates that cover the area between the cars, but be careful because the cars will move up or down when they want and not necessarily at the same time. There s also a cover over your head and the sides have plastic tarp like shades to keep the elements out). The problems of sitting near the door? There are metal door wheels on metal tracks constantly moving back and forth as people step through the door. The temperature and humidity bloom and subsist as the door opens and closes. There are some seats on the first floor of the coach cars but they are limited. When making your reservations you get to choose lower or upper floor but the lower s go quick. All-in-all, I would say the lower floor would be quieter since the coach car s doors are only on the upper floor. The five bathrooms are on the lower floor, but the seats and bathroom area is separated by a door (same type of mechanical door on the upper floor). There s one sorta big bathroom where you could easily change clothes (probably more for someone in a wheelchair or walker), one almost big bathroom where you could change clothes, and three bathrooms where you d swear you were on a commercial jet. The toilet accommodations are just like you find on a commercial jet a very small toilet without a water trap, a separate button to flush the toilet, and a sink so small a hamster would have a tough time washing his hands in. You can get by. Oh, when you get your seating assignments at the station, you get to choose between the 5PM, 7PM, or 9PM dinner seating. Since we checked in early at both train stations, we chose 5PM both times so we don t know which dinner times get taken quickest. At your seat, you have an overhead bin, sans doors, where you can put your larger items, like helmets. We put our helmets in our soft helmet bags and they fit just fine overhead. We had two soft bags, like drawstring backpacks, and a small, soft side insulated container with water bottles, which we put near our feet. You can t put anything under the seat since there s no available room to do that. Your seat comes with a reclinerlike leg platform which you can rotate from its stored position under your seat into various positions and a nearly horizontal position. On the back of the seat in front of you there is a tray table which you can open down and there s a metal foot bar which you can open 19

down to various heights to park your feet on. The seats can recline back into various positions but none that we could find that was comfortable enough for a good night s sleep. There are two pairs of two seats for each aisle in the coach car so you can sit with your significant other. The seats are wider than commercial jet coach seats but not quite as wide as commercial jet business class seats. There are big windows down each side of the coach cars so every seat has a nice view. You do have plenty of leg room, even for the tallest of travelers. There are curtains pulled back on each seat s windows which you can close at night. Let s get back to the windows for a second. Put bluntly, there s not much too see. Sounds weird, doesn t it. Much of the track bed has been dug through the countryside to keep it level and the dirt was thrown to the right and left of the track bed. There are a lot of trees on each side so if you like green or you are a tree-hugger, you re in for a treat. Once in a great while, you might pass through a town, usually through the seedy backside of an industrial area, and suddenly you re wishing for the monotony of green again. There are a few, and I do mean few, times when you pass near or through the center of a town. In fact, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the tracks pass right through the center of town (I don t know the backstory on that one but I bet it is interesting). The train pulls out of the train station pretty much at 4PM. The trip is non-stop, at least so to speak. You do end up stopping multiple times, but it s usually on a siding while you wait for another train to rumble on by. No one gets on or off between Sanford and Lorton, or vice-versa. 17 hours, bunky, so you better have scintillating small talk or a good book. Video games on your tablet are a god-send. Our dinner was called promptly at 5PM. You then start the trek towards the front of the train and the dining car. On the way, you bump into interesting people. When I say bump, I mean literally. The train car is lurching up/down, right/left, forward/back, so you better have your hands free to grab hold of a seat back. When you get to the dining car (usually two cars) the wait staff starts yelling out How many in your party? Each table seats four (essentially, booths) so if you re a couple you get to sit with strangers. Ours weren t bad at all. We had a teacher and her 10 year old son while her husband and other three sons sat across the aisle. It was actually an interesting time because the teacher was quite cheerful. On the return trip, we had a mathematics professor from a Maryland community college and her traveling companion. The food was actually quite good. Let s see, you had a choice of fish, beef, chicken, or lasagna. Susan had fish on both trips and I tried the chicken and the 20

beef. The fish won hands down, but the chicken and the beef were still very tasty. Online, you ll see forums that talk about the free wine at dinner. No such luck. The math teacher has been riding the train between her homes in Maryland and Florida for about ten years and she said the free wine service stopped about four years ago. Sad, really. You can t linger over after-dinner coffee as the waiters are trying to hustle you out as fast as they can to get ready for the next seating. You then begin the trek back to your coach seats. You know which car you re seated in, say 5210, but there s not a real rhyme or reason as to the numbering or how the cars are connected. As you enter the coach car, immediately on the top right is the coach car s number in big, red electronic numbers. You keep going to you get to yours. Interesting to see how many people didn t figure out that little trick. Since we were the last coach car, there were multiple times when people when past our seat and then in about 15 seconds would go back towards the front of the train, mumbling about having passed through their own train car and not recognized their seat. On the trip north, everyone on our car was an adult (at least physically) and were courteous. On the trip south, there was a young woman who spent what seemed the entire time on her phone talking to her friends, oblivious that other people around her were trying to sleep. By the way, you have two 110VAC outlets at each seat pair, so keeping your tablet charged while you re playing video games is easy. When we arrived in Lorton, it was spitting rain, not even sprinkling. Having read online that motorcycles were off first, we waited outside. After about 30 minutes of watching cars unload, the skies opened up and it began raining hard. After about another 10 minutes, here comes our bike around the corner being towed on the motorcycle platform. Some people waiting around us started making jokes about the poor bast**** on the motorcycle. Susan simple turned around and cheerfully announced we were the proud owners. We all had a good laugh. Once they unhooked the tow tractor and backed the motorcycle platform up to the ramp, I waited until the Loader started to unstrap the bike. I ran out into the rain with a hoodie on to try and keep me dry it worked ok until I had to sit in the ½ inch of water that had accumulated on the seat. I put up the antenna and sat on the bike while it was being unstrapped. I started the bike to let it warm a little bit. When the Loader was ready, he said he 21

was ready, and got ready to push the bike out of the wheel chock (remember the chock s flip-flop plate?). This was another time when I had to yell Whoa! to the Loader as he prepared to put both hands on the bike s fairing to push it out of the wheel chock. I don t need your help getting out of the chock. I have reverse! I told him. His arms retracted. I don t think he had time to put hands on my girl. Remember I told you the Lorton ramp was wood with sketchy footing. Well, it was and the downpour made it very slick to the point that even with my rubber soled boots I had trouble keeping my footing. I backed all the way down the ramp in reverse just using my feet to balance. Worked like a charm! When they were unloading the cars before our bike was unloaded, the Amtrak lady on the PA kept telling people to load their stuff into their cars under the awning (dry!) and then pull into the parking lot to rearrange, set their GPS, etc. to let the remaining cars use the awning. While I was getting the bike Susan talked to one of the Amtrak people and I got flagged to park in the lead spot under the awning. Susan said the Amtrak people were concerned about the bikers. I parked under the awning and we loaded up our carry-on gear while we unloaded and put on our rain gear. We were off on our adventure! If you return on the Auto Train from Lorton to Sanford, there is a Comfort Inn that is literally 5 minutes from the train station. We stayed there the night before our trip south and comfortably made it to the train station. The process pretty much repeated itself. We really didn t get much sleep on the return trip but we were headed home to our own bed, so not to worry. As all of you, I m very protective of my bike so I was worried about the trip. Well, she almost survived unscathed. I m not sure how, but on the return trip one of the triple-tree straps managed to crack that little plastic cosmetic shield on top of the front fender that hides the forks. I saw it when we unloaded the bike in Sanford. Susan spoke with one of the Amtrak employees while I was checking out the rest of the bike. Thankfully, no other damage. Amtrak had us pull to the station exit booth to talk to the employee there. Now, here s kind of the weird part. When I used my soft straps in Sanford for the trip north, nobody said anything. When we were waiting in the Lorton train station for our return trip I got called over the PA. Long story short, I had to sign a waiver that I was using my soft straps. After showing the Sanford Amtrak employee the damage, he immediately (I mean immediately) pulled out my signed waiver. After a short discussion, he did give me a claim form to file with their insurance company which I stuffed into the trunk because we wanted to get home. On the way home, we took a detour off I-95 and stopped at Champion s where I ordered the $50 part. After getting cleaned up when arriving home and unpacking, I looked at the claim form. It didn t admit 22

anything about the damage. Knowing it would most likely be an uphill battle with an insurance company for $50, I decided it wasn t worth my time and threw the claim form away. I don t think Susan and I will be using the Auto Train again. It was a little pricey (~$625 for a roundtrip for the two of us and the bike) and it was a LONG 17 hour trip. If you can get comfortable in a chair with 1/8 padding, can contort your body to a sleeping position, and can sleep through anything, then by all means give it a try. It was an adventure and it was worth trying once. Twice would be one time too many for us. 23
