3 M O N T H L Y B U L L E T I N Geomagne tic, Ionospher ic and Auroral Data from Finland October 4 This bulletin is published monthly for presenting the preliminary ground-based geomagnetic, iono spheric, cosmic and auroral data as recorded by Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, Geophysical Observatory of the Oulu University and Nurmijärvi Geophysical Observatory of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Most of the data in this bulletin is also available (updated daily) through World Wide Web (URL: Auroral data is published only if available. Geomagnetic data from Nurmijärvi and Sodankylä observatories is separately published in yearbooks. Contents -Geomagnetic K- and Q-indices and daily Ak-values Monthly plot of Ak-indices Cosmic ray data Geomagnetic pulsation events... -Monthly table of absolute mean hourly values of magnetic field components... -Monthly median values of ionospheric parameters Daily magnetograms Daily plots of riometer data... -Daily plots of ionospheric critical frequencies and virtual heights... -Quick look tables of the auroral all-sky pictures...()7 ISSN455-87X
4 Magnetic data Data are recorded ( sec) at four stations extending from auroral region in northern Finland to sub-auroral region in southern Finland: Sodankylä is the independent, nation-wide geophysical observatory of the University of Oulu. It has been in operation since 4. In the variation room of the observatory a Polish torsion photoelectric magnetometer (TPM), a Russian TPM magnetometer and a Danish fluxgate magnetometer (FGE) produce the digital data. The analog La Cour recording was finished at the end of. Absolute measurements provide the base line control once per week. Oulujärvi is a magnetic station of the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory. Absolute and variation rooms were built in and a Danish FGE magnetometer was installed in November. Absolute measurements have been done two or three times per year. Hankasalmi is a magnetic station of the Nurmijärvi observatory. A Danish FGE magnetometer was installed in July on top of an underground concrete pillar. Absolute measurements are done during the summer. Nurmijärvi is the geophysical observatory of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) started in. The variation room of the observatory is equipped with a Polish TPM magnetometer and a Danish FGE magnetometer. The analog La Cour recording was finished at the end of. Absolute measurements are done once a week. DI-fluxgate instruments and proton magnetometers are used for absolute measurements at all the stations. Timing is provided by GPS, DCF or Omega receivers. NUR, HAN and OUJ are also stations of the IMAGE magnetometer chain. SOD and NUR send their data also for INTERMAGNET filing. Ionospheric data The ionospheric station at Sodankylä started measurements in August 7. Vertical incidence soundings are made half-hourly, during special operations times per hour. The present, modified IS-4 sounder has been in operation since February 77. Data is scaled manually. For terminology used, see URSI handbook of ionogram interpretation and reduction,. edition, Nov 7, by W.R. Piggot and K. Rawer, WDC A, report UAG-. Riometer data is shown from a chain of 7 stations. IRIS wide beam (8. MHz, in operation since 4) and Abisko ( MHz, since 7) are operated by University of Lancaster. For further information about IRIS, see / Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory operates the stations Ivalo ( MHz, since 7), Sodankylä ( MHz, since 4; 5.4 MHz, since 4), Rovaniemi (.4 MHz, since 74, but at different locations), Oulu ( MHz, since 7, but at different locations) and Jyväskylä (.4 MHz, since 74). All data is shown as absorption values. Cosmic ray data A -NM-4 neutron monitor is operating at Oulu from July 4. The monitor was moved to its present site (5.5 N 5.47 E) in September 7. A plot of pressure corrected hourly data (counts accumulated during one hour intervals) is presented in units of percent with respect to the monthly mean intensity. Auroral index data ( quick-look tables ) Auroral all-sky-camera data is available from five stations (Kilpisjärvi, Kevo, Muonio, Longerbyen and Abisko). Quick-Look keogram representations can be found at RACLE/ASC/
