LaGrand Sight Unseen Policy LaGrand Angus Ranch will guarantee complete satisfaction on any lots purchased by sight-unseen order, or they come home. Registration Certificates With the exception of s 52 59, bulls will be transferred to the buyer at the seller s expense. Each buyer must be sure to give the sale clerk his proper name and address for making transfers. Delivery LaGrand will offer free delivery on bulls in the continental United States to central points within 300 miles. Herd Health All cattle will be accompanied with proper health certificates for immediate shipment. All bulls selling have been fertility tested by the herd veterinarian. They have received ViraShield, Lepto and 7-way Clostridium. They are immunized for both Type 1 and Type 2 BVD, Rednose, Parainfluenza and BRSV. They were blood tested negative for Johne s Disease, BVD PI and Leukosis. Genetic Defect Testing All potential AM and/or NH carriers have been tested. Results not available at catalog press time will be available at the sale. Insurance Livestock mortality insurance for your purchases will be available sale day at the clerk s desk. We recommend that insurance be obtained on lots purchased. Announcements Announcements at the sale by the owners or the auctioneer will take precedence over statements in the sale catalog. 4 WELCOME... Dear Cattle Friends: We, as well as Duane and Laura Pankratz, want to welcome you to the 2010 LaGrand Scotch Cap Ranch Annual Bull Sale. We are excited about this year s offering. We have appreciated all of your support and input in the past years and believe that these bulls fit your criteria according to your requests. Many of you have expressed the need for bulls that have not been pushed to achieve numbers, but rather grown and developed to be fully functional and profitable. We are confident that these bulls are ready to go to work for you. The scanning ultrasound showed an average back fat EPD of.14 versus the Angus breed average of.27. They still have the full genetic potential of their sire and dam even though the feeding program does not maximize those EPDs. We did not creep feed these fall-born calves through the winter. They were on grass until November. We started giving them three pounds of cake every other day when they were about ten months old. In November, we began to supplement the ration to provide sufficient protein for gradual growth. Our number one objective is to provide bulls with good foot, leg and hoof condition for the ultimate in traveling and longevity. Included in this sale are a few bull calves we have purchased to give you additional sire selection. They have been raised on a grass diet as well. We are all well aware of the challenges we face in the cattle business. Now, more than ever, is the time to make the wisest decisions for your profitability. That being said, we still have our No-Nonsense, Second-to-None Guarantee for the first breeding season. We also offer free delivery within 300 miles. All the bulls have received all their vaccinations and have been blood tested negative for Johne s, Leukosis and BVD PI. We have tested all bulls that have a potential carrier in their pedigree for AM or NH; all bulls to be sold are AM and NH free. Many of this year s selection have been DNA tested through Igenity. We wanted to offer the Igenity profile to you as a beneficial tool to use to bring up your bottom line. This information will be available at the sale. We appreciate those of you who have braved the cold to join us for the first three sales and hope to see you all back this year on our new (and hopefully milder) date. Doc, Laura, Shane, Amanda and the entire LaGrand Scotch Cap crew are dedicated to providing sound, functional bulls that are ready to go to work for you. This offering was selected to meet the needs of the commercial cattleman as well as the purebred breeder and includes the top quality 2008 forage-raised bulls, meaning that they have all been raised and developed in Western South Dakota. Once again, at the request of you, their customers, LaGrand Scotch Cap has raised these bulls on grass and maintained them through the winter months with a high roughage ration to ensure soundness, fertility, and longevity in lieu of pushing them in an effort to maximize growth and muscle potential. These bulls are great footed, hard and ready for cows. 7 CATALOG INFORMATION American Angus Association Selection Tools Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an I, and may or may not include the animal s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping or data edits needed for NCE. Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Marbling EPD (MARB) is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (REA), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. $Value Indexes $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B value combines the contributions of $F and $G. $Values should be used to complement the criteria that producers already use when selecting bulls. The $Values are not designed to be driven by a single trait, as an index is multi-trait by design. These selection tools are the result of the application of industry-relevant market values to Angus genetics for preweaning, feedlot and carcass merit. Breeding season is defined as the first 90-day period following first turnout of bulls. If a problem occurs, we will bring you a suitable replacement, or you will receive full credit minus the salvage value of the original bull toward another purchase.
