1 IAI NEWSLETTER Number 22: January 18, 2000 NEWS Attached are drafts of the recommendations from the Sociology and Social Work panels for review. Please send any comments on either recommendation to the panel in care of the ICCB by Friday, March 3 rd. At its meeting in November, the Steering Panel voted to remind schools that a minimum requirement for participating in the IAI is inclusion of basic IAI participation information in their catalogs (and on their website, if there is one). Attached is a description of information on IAI suggested for inclusion in catalogs. As the first step in the fifth year review of the General Education Core Curriculum, the Steering Panel discussed the following issues and took the action indicated on each: a) The minimum number of credits (37 semester credits) continues to be appropriate. b) The panel declined to add a cross-panel interdisciplinary course or a rubric for one. c) The panel did not add a second math course as a requirement. d) The panel declined to add foreign language, art studio/performance, computer literacy, or health/wellness courses to the General Education Core Curriculum. e) The panel agreed to include ethical considerations (along with diversity, et al.) in the statement about issues and skills that should be embedded in every GE course (page 6) of the 1994 General Education Core Curriculum. f) Finally, the Panel recommended no change to the curriculum structure but will edit the explanatory text to remove references to the fifth year review. In other business, while the Steering Panel supports the K-12 standards-setting movement and college entry skills assessment and remediation of deficiencies, it rejected the GE Communication panel recommendation to set a statewide minimum standard in reading, writing, and math beyond the already stated assumption that students are to meet admission requirements and Published by the Board of Higher Education expectations. The panel believes more specific requirements are appropriate for institutions. Each GE Field Panel is reexamining its recommendation and courses. The GE Communication panel does not plan to change the introduction or the descriptions of the three different courses. The panel will review 20% of courses annually over five years. It will also designate on the web in which course the research paper is taught. A survey will be sent out to participating schools shortly. The GE Mathematics panel affirmed its introduction is still up-to-date. The panel is re-examining prerequisites for courses and recom-mends that students who are deficient in geome-try be remediated. The panel set a deadline of fall 2000 for participating schools to bring pre-requisites into compliance. The GE Humanities and Fine Arts panel also continues to support its introduction and basic structure, but will revisit the fourth semester of foreign language course since syllabi show these courses are not what the panel intended. The panel will review courses that have caused problems from the beginning, pairs of similar courses that may be inconsistent-ly coded, and low incidence courses starting at its spring meeting. The GE Social and Behavior-al Science panel also continues to support its objectives and course descriptions, and will review individual courses by selecting a random sample. The GE Physical and Life Science panel reaffirmed its opening statement of objectives. It will shortly be surveying all institutions (and will then add a recommendation) on simulations, etc. in addition to or instead of lab. The panel reaffirmed its course categories and will select specific courses to review. Note: all panels will begin sending requests for syllabi for their planned reviews this semester. Panels appreciate your cooperation. It is incumbent upon all parti-cipating schools to show that courses listed on the web continue to be comparable to those in the panels' recommendations. Failure to do so may result in courses being removed from the web. The Steering Panel requested that

2 panels that adopted AP grades of 4 (rather than the standard 3) or better re-examine their position. The Steering Panel will survey institutional contacts, transfer coordinators, and faculty panelists on the impact of IAI in February. REMINDERS Each participating school is responsible for keeping its accepted courses up to date. When prefix, number, title, or credit hour changes are made to a listed course, be sure to inform the panel(s). A form for ending/adding courses is on the Web in FACT. A NEW form to be the cover page for the syllabus needed to add each new courses is attached a copy is on the web. Baccalaureate Majors becoming effective for freshmen entering on or after Summer 2000 are: English, Manufacturing Technology, Mathematics, Nursing, Special Education, Speech Communication, and Theatre Arts. THE WEB All course descriptions can now be accessed in the FACT section: IAI/FACT/Default.taf?page=CourseDescriptions Or by clicking on the Course Description Link in the left hand margin on any page. The Web now has a new IAI Server that is twice as fast as the original. Users may notice a better response time in pages like the Worksheet.
