1 Performance Comparison of Standard and Energy Efficient Induction Motor For Pump Application Yogesh G. Tayade Research Scholar Mtech (IDC) B.S. Dani Assistant Professor Sachin Suke Assistant Professor m ABSTRACT The alternating current induction motor has been an industry workhorse over 100 years for electromechanical conversion application. Due to robustness, reliability, low price and maintenance free, induction motors (IMs) used in most of the industrial applications. The need for energy conservation is increasing the requirements for saving the electrical energy. It is therefore important to optimize the efficiency of motor drive systems if significant energy savings are to be obtained. The study of Food processing industry. it was observed that among a wide variation of enduse electricity consuming equipment, electric motors were the major consumer of electrical energy, accounting for 40-47% of total electric energy. In this paper performance e of standard and energy efficient motor is measure and compare in terms of speed, starting current, full load current at different voltages. Keywords Energy Efficient Motor, High efficiency motor, induction motor, pump,5 hp, 3.7kw 1.0 INTRODUCTION According to the WEC (World Energy Council, 2009), in industrialized countries three main sectors are responsible for three quarters of electricity consumption: electric motors, 45%,lighting, about 15%, and home appliances and consumer electronics, also around 15%.Global energy consumption of electric motors is around 9000 TWh per year. These data show the impact that electric motors produce on electrical energy consumption. Therefore, the manufacturers in this sector are investing heavily in the energy efficiency of their products.(3) With limited natural resources and increasing global demand for energy, is the only reason that energy costs will continue to increase into the future. As energy costs rise around the world, the incentive for facilities to operate their equipment more efficiently will compound over time. There are government regulations use to enforce conservation, and compensatory means (e.g., special rate tariffs) that reward users for using less energy.(9) Energy efficiency improvements such as through replacement of old standard electric motors, frequently burnt motors, or oversized electric motors by High Efficiency Motors (HEMS) and improving its drive systems - can be an option by which a company can offset their electricity expenses.(1) 2.0 FIELD DATA MEASUREMENT 11 Yogesh, Dani, Sachin

2 Food processing industries have massive population LT induction motors. Pump and compressors are major application area of induction motors. this research carried on induction motor pump used in food processing industry. Load survey of induction motors can be taken to identify improvement option. 2.1 Measurent Performance of induction motor involve measurement of electrical load parameter like per phase voltage, current, supply frequency, speed, power drawn. Measuring instruments was used for measuring current, voltage, power. A digital tachometer is used to measure speed of motor. 2.2 Name plate data of motors The pump used for supplying water to chilling unit, two motors are used two alternately, daily 18 to 20 hrs of operation, two motor of Kirloskar make 5HP. Pump efficiency is 77% for standard induction motor and 84% for energy efficient induction Paramet er Speed (rpm) Variable Voltage SI M M M M Slip (%) Starting Current (Amp.) Full Load Current 7.16 (Amp.) motor. Delivery head is 16.5mtr. 3.0 STANDARD VS ENERGY EFFICIENT MOTORS The efficiency of a motor is defined as ratio of the output power delivered to the input power absorbed. An produces the same shaft output power, but uses less input power than a standard efficiency motor. Fig- 1 Standard Pumping Set [] [5] 12 Yogesh, Dani, Sachin

3 In Fig-1 an input power of 100 hp in standard pumping set is given and with this input, the output power of 31 hp. Thus the efficiency of this standard pumping set is 31% [6]. voltage is not constant which affect the performance of motor. The motor performance under such a condition may be observed to analyze the results obtained. Table 2 Performance test at Variable voltage Speed (rpm) Variable Voltage (volt) Fig. 4 Speed vs Variable Volt age Fig.-2 Energy Efficient Pumping Set [5] While in Fig-2 Energy efficient pumping set is presented and with the help of this figure it can be calculated that for the output power of 31 hp only 43 hp of input power is required so the efficiency of this energy efficient pumping set becomes 72% [5]. In this way on the basis of the comparison of Fig 1and 2, one can conclude that by using energy efficient pumping set we can save the energy up to 41%. so they have a higher speed than standard motors. - can reduce maintenance costs and improve operations in industry due to robustness and reliability. - Increasing the productivity.[5] Table 2 gives measured speed at different voltage, it is observed that speed obtained during low voltage and high voltage is low. So slip is maximum. Speed of energy efficient motor better than standard motor at all voltage level and gives minimum slip. Full load current (Amp.) Variable Voltage (volt) Fig. 3 Full Load Current VS Variable Voltage 4.0 TEST CONDUCTED The following tests were conducted to compare practically evaluated values with the theoretically obtained values, so that motor performance could be established theoretically. 4.1 Performance test This test is carried under constant delivery head with variable supply voltage. As supply 13 Yogesh, Dani, Sachin Fig. 4 St arting Current Vs Variable Voltage

4 4.2 Temperature rise test The operating temperature test were conducted, the motor was loaded at rated conditions and temperature rise is monitored for every 1hour. on average, this took for 6 hours for each motor. It is found that temperature rise in standard motor degree/Celsius which is higher than energy efficient motor 89.4 degree/celsius. 4.3 Loss measurement test The no load test and blocked rotor test is carried to measure losses. The no load test was conducted at different voltages and core losses were found to be varying. As the supply voltage to the motor was increased the core losses increased. The magnetizing reactance and core loss resistance values were calculated. The blocked rotor test was conducted at rated current and also at a value little less than the rated current. The stator winding resistance was measured by DC test. After calculation, the average values of stator resistance and reactance as well as rotor resistance and reactance were obtained. Table 3 Efficiency vs Motor Loading EFFIC IENC Y (%) MOTOR LOADING (%) 50% 75% 100% SI SI M M M M M The efficiency of the 3.7kWEnergy efficient motor has a 5% higher efficiency than the standard motor. From the efficiency curves it was evident that the premium plus motors exhibit flatter efficiencies between 50% and 100 % load. 5.0 CONCLUSION This paper illustrates the differences between standard and energy efficient motors. The energy efficient motors are more efficient and also exhibit relatively flatter efficiency curves versus load. It can be seen that the difference between the efficiency at rated load and the operating (partial load) efficiency is less significant. The energy efficient motors run at lower temperatures than standard motors. The energy efficient motor gives better performance during variable voltage supply. lowest current consumption during starting and full load operation of energy efficient motor. In the age when conservation of natural resources and energy saving is considered so important, the leading manufacturers of induction motors have contributed by progressively making available environmental friendly products. Thus by improving the efficiency of the induction motor we can also contribute in making the environment clean for all living-beings and today when global warming i.e. pollution is increasing day by day.
