2 Reading ViP web and phase3 application ViP is a joint initiative for development and application of driving simulator methodology with a focus on the interaction between humans and technology (driver and vehicle and/or traffic environment). I read this as methodology for engineering of vehicles Now at workshop Revere, where Chalmers also has its real test vehicles New, but already used in some courses. More to come. Better compatibility with ViP to be worked on.
3 Chalmers is a school Chalmers graduates engineers at 2 (or 3) levels: MScs ( civilingenjörer) and PhDs (=tekniska doktorer) (and Docents)

7 Use of driving simulators in engineering education
8 CASTER simulator CASTER is owned by the education programme and driven by a student organisation So far used in the vehicle dynamics course: Students build a vehicle motion model and use it to design distribution of roll stiffness distribution and brake proportioning between front and rear axle in a passenger car. Then, they bring the model to simulator and drive it on a virtual proving ground to get subjective understanding of these design parameters. a BSC thesis: A student group builds exterior and interior graphics for a truck. Also rebuild one development seat (desk-top driving simulator) to have truck steering wheel.

10 How can Chalmers contribute to ViP3? ViP2 set up, from application: ViP2 project form: One possible Chalmers project in ViP2: Problem motivated project Solving that problem will generate some method/tool, useful for the ViP platform. Problem: Transition from automatic to manual driving takes time Method/tool: Combined simulation and test track testing
11 (Combined verification methods for) Transport efficient AD in hazardous situations Research Motivating Problem: 2025: AD in transport efficient speeds ( km/h) is/will be limited by possibilities for safe-vehicle-statereaching / hand-back / take-back in hazardous situations. Limitations can result in: too limited speed, too large gap, exclusion of winter-road, exclusion of overtaking, too short hand-back time, too difficult take-back, etc. Envisioned product/solution: A structured approach to Research question(s)/objectives: Define an AD operation and the hazards/requirements/test cases to be covered. How shall simulation, driving simulator and real vehicle tests be combined for the different verification loops during the product development? Deliverable(s): Simulation models/scripts/results Driving simulator scenarios/tests/results Real vehicle tests/instrumentation/results

Requirements Always a reference solution ( test at least with and without ) Often need to vary parameters; cover a problem space ( test several variants of scenario) Test new technology before it is built (save time and money) Simulation, at office Alternative solutions Driving simulator Real vehicle test, manual driving Design parameter sweep/optimization Repeatable testing Safe testing Representative integration in vehicle Representative behaviour w.r.t. to vehicle w.r.t. driver w.r.t. to surroundings (road & traffic) - - (env. sens) - (env. sens) + (Different alternative solutions will win, depending on what and when in development)
