8 A S K T H E MOTOR MEDICS Automotive Advice from the Under The Hood Show On occasion my 2006 Chevy Colorado vehicle won t turn over. When I turn the key, there is no sound and all the lights on the dash stay bright. I have found one thing that is different when this happens and that is a symbol of a padlock on the dash that flashes when the key is on. When the vehicle cranks normally the light comes on then goes off right away. I have had it in for service several times with no luck as they can t duplicate the problem. They have told me that the symbol is for the anti-theft pass lock system and that it can t be the problem because it shuts off fuel to prevent theft and does not control the starter. They think it may be the starter and want to replace it but at a cost of over I want a second opinion and value yours. We don t want to criticize others repair knowledge since we make our own mistakes but If they were to look under GMs description and operation of the pass lock system in the manual they would see clearly that the theft system does control the starter. We see this issue often and almost always it is a problem with the lock cylinder sensor. This would be a good area to investigate before changing a starter. I just moved from Florida with my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer which has never seen temps below 40 degrees. I lived here in the 80s and remember how hard it was to keep my car going. If you have been following the recommended maintenance schedule you will be closer to ready. Consult with a local mechanic for a complete list but here are a few things that can catch you off guard. A battery that has been worn down by summer heat may fail when very cold. A capacitance test will reveal its true condition. Poor heating or engine freeze-up caused by lack of regular cooling system care. Flush the system and the heater core on a scheduled basis to keep it in good shape. Don t forget to inspect belts and hoses; the cold is very hard on them. Tires will drop pressure when cold as well so adjust as needed. Follow the manufacturers recommended oil viscosity ratings when changing your oil. Don t use thinner oil unless it is allowed by the manufacturer or you could cause engine damage. For easier starting fully synthetic oil can help on very cold days. There are other items as well so get to your mechanic before it gets too cold and don t forget a good winter survival kit. Never mind that I am the one who bought the car and pays for the insurance, the gas, the tires, I could go on forever but she s just not going to get it. I didn t even break it that bad. I borrowed the car and when I went to adjust the rear view mirror it fell off. I d tell you the story of what happened when she borrowed my car last but she would never get over the embarrassment. Anyways, I am stuck with this mirror thing. The metal tab that should be stuck to the window won t stick. I have tried many different kinds of glue and it just keeps coming off. If you had, we could probably help you with that too. As for the mirror, you just need better glue. What you need is special glass glue for mirrors that is available at auto parts stores. Ask the counter guy and they will help. Make sure to follow directions exactly, cleaning as directed and don t over apply the product. When they say one drop they mean it. Once installed it won t come off so be sure to align it right. I have a question about my car wheels. I had my tires replaced this weekend and had no problems with the experience but when all was done they handed me a card to sign making me aware that I had to come back between 50 and 100 miles to have the wheels re-torqued or they would not be responsible if one of my wheels were to fall off, yes fall off. This seems crazy to me. I have had several other sets of tires installed before on this car and no shop has ever given me a card to sign or even made me aware of such a thing. They said the service is free of charge but it seems like a hassle to me. By the way my car is a 2002 Cadillac STS Please help me with some advice. Each year we see a couple vehicles that have to come in due to a loose wheel after a recent tire replacement or other wheel removal. Sometimes the wheel has even fallen off. The one thing they all have in common is that the wheel had not been retorqued. Many vehicles now have aluminum wheels and with age corrosion builds up behind the wheel and when it s removed the corrosion shifts leaving an unstable mounting surface. Re-torqueing the wheels will prevent them from coming off. I am a loyal General Motors customer and have been so for many years. I currently have four GM vehicles and they all are equipped with OnStar. The vehicles range from and the problem is that I want to activate the OnStar in two of the cars and they tell me it can t be done because the system is too old. I m a little frustrated by this and would like your advice that hopefully gives me an understanding of why I can no longer use a feature that my car came with. I do have OnStar in the newest car which is the same model as one of the older ones, a Monte Carlo, and it works just fine. Can you shed some light on this? I was frustrated to find out that I couldn t use the system in the car when I decided to have it activated. I love the idea of the safety that it can provide. The older model vehicles had an OnStar unit that was an analog based communication system, remember when cell phones went digital? Eventually all of the analog towers disappeared and the old phones wouldn t work. This is the same for the older OnStar units. Once the analog tower went away they became obsolete.
