5 Power Systems - to suit your energy needs Hairdryers, electric ovens, washing machines, hot plates, boilers, air conditioners, diving compressors and power tools need a great amount of energy to operate and some require even more just to start! Even if your battery bank allows you to connect a number of smaller devices and use them for a limited period of time, your domestic batteries will soon reach their limits. It is not usually practical or even desirable to increase the capacity of the battery bank so that it can serve as the only source of electrical energy for your appliances. Depending on the type of vessel, either a high-performance HTG alternator (fitted to the main engine) or by installation of a compact DC generator (which is typically half the size of a standard generator) to ensure that power onboard is available. The HTG alternator quickly and reliably charges the battery bank while cruising. When used in conjunction with a Panda MultiPlus, 230 Volts AC is available throughout the day even when not continually cruising. The MultiPlus System is available for all mobile vehicle and marine applications even coaches and locomotives. This enables most commercial air-conditioning units (Climma, Coleman or Electrolux) to be operated. 7 System 2: Extended DC Generator Systems - up to 15 KW Suitable for powering air conditioning up to BTU, fridges, freezers and diving compressors such as the Bauer Junior Just 2 or 3 periods of 30 minutes a day is sufficient for supplying a yacht (approx. 12 meters) with enough energy for the whole 24-hour period. A continual supply of AC power is supplied throughout the day from the battery bank via an inverter. 9 System 4: Parallel AC Generators Systems Operational Reliability throughout all performance ranges up to 200 KW Fischer Panda AC Generator Fischer Panda Parallel Unit Installing two generators in parallel to operate together has two main advantages. Either they can be run together which will provide the system with twice as much power with enough supply for very demanding peak periods or the load can be switched from one generator to the other without having to switch off the entire system. Two generators allow unexpectedly large loads or longer peak periods of demand to be covered. When the demand drops back to the normal level, only one smaller generator is required to then run which is more efficient than running a larger generator with a low load. When power is required for very long periods of time, the second generator can be started and brought online to take from the first. The first generator can then be safely switched off for maintenance purposes without having to shutdown the entire power system. If the primary power generator fails, a second generator is always available to supply the power without having to rely on a backup system with reduced capacity. This is suited for applications which may require a full energy supply in reserve. This system does not feature load-sharing capabilities for safety reasons. Both generators are coupled and operate together as one unit. To increase operational safety both generators are shutdown if a system failure occurs. 10 The DC-AC Power System (DAPS) For a flexible supply of energy for your domestic consumers throughout the day, the Panda AGT Generator operates as part of an intelligent DC-AC power system. As only a small amount of energy is usually required, the generator does not have to continually run. A battery bank of sufficient capacity supplies energy throughout the day. The generator only runs (automatically) when the batteries require recharging. The DAPS power system is designed so that the generator only has to run 2-3 times a day to supply sufficent power for a 24 hour period. Running time efficiency is increased. Low noise, energy saving and ecological aspects are good reasons for making use of the DC-AC Power System. Power Components - Panda DC Generators Fischer Panda AGT Generators are fully enclosed within a sound insulated capsule and featuring a lightweight compact construction. They provide effective and fast battery charging. They function ideally within a battery-based power system when AC demands are required on board your vessel and these can be supplied via an inverter (see Multi Plus) from the battery bank. The AGT generators are available in a wide range of standard voltages 12V / 24V / 48V to suit typical mobile power systems. Other voltages are available on request. Vehicle versions for modular installation allow the radiator to be installed externally on the roof to ensure the best possible cooling. The AGT generators feature the patented voltage control system (VCS) as standard to ensure that the voltage with a ±3 V tolerance is available when running. The HTL battery charger / regulator transforms the primary voltage of the HTG generator (approx. 240 volts / 300 to 700 Hz) to controlled voltage - low residual 14.1 or 28.2 volts DC. The charge voltage can be adjusted for all normal batteries and can be regulated according to the CCLM mode. It is also possible to replace a normal 3-phase vehicle dynamo with an HTG generator. 11 Power Components - Panda Marine AC Generators Water-cooled windings Water-cooling for engine and generator No cooling air flow inside capsule Modular design ensures installation flexibility No appreciable warming of the installation area Water-cooled silencer (up to 25 kw) Fischer Panda PSA Generators feature all the reliability and safety of the asynchronous generator, provide fully water-cooled systems for both winding and engine, are fully enclosed within a sound insulated capsule and have a lightweight compact construction. They are the right choice for operating demanding consumers such as air conditioning and diving compressors. They also produce an extremely clean sine wave for sensitive electronic equipment. No cooling air is required inside of the capsule. This helps to ensure that ambient temperatures remain constant. The stator is electrically indestructible and features a lifetime guarantee. A wide range of voltages and frequencies is available - 50 Hz / 230V / / 1500 rpm and 60 Hz / 120V / 240V / 1800 / 3600 rpm. Vehicle versions for modular installation allow the radiator to be installed externally on the roof thus ensuring the best possible cooling. Many versions also feature a patented voltage control system (VCS) which ensures that a voltage with ±3 V is available. Panda Marine Generators without electronic regulation (ND) The Panda Generator ND version is an ideal solution for those interested in gaining a fair price. The generators are identical to the corresponding NE models in respect of all main components, such as motor, generator, sound insulation casing, water-cooling etc. In the case of ND generators, the electronic speed control is not fitted. The voltage tolerance lies therefore within an acceptable range of ±8 %. This is similar to a land power connection. Panda Marine Generators with VCS Voltage Control (NE) The Panda generator NE version has been fitted for many years with the tried and tested VCS (Voltage Control System) whereby the motor speed is progressively controlled. This has an enormously positive effect on the exhaust emission and ensures that the generator achieves up to 15 % more effective performance than other non-controlled generators. The VCS adjusts the voltage with a tolerance of +/- 3 volts in the range up to 80 % of the nominal performance. An external AC control box contains the VCS and the capacitors which are used for boosting the starting current. One of the reasons for the superior efficiency of Panda generators is the very effective cooling system, it ensures that the temperatures inside the sound insulation capsule remains within an acceptable range even in tropical conditions at the same time achieving the best possible sound insulation as free-flowing cooling air is not required. Dual-circuit cooling for generator and engine Seawater with high-salt content and tropical temperatures increases the danger that metal can be affected by galvanic corrosion (Electrolysis). Even a very small current can have a destructive effect. Therefore, Fischer Panda uses for all Panda generators from 3.2 kw upwards, a dual-circuit cooling system. The engine and generator are cooled by freshwater. Seawater only comes into contact with the heat exchanger, which is manufactured from a top quality alloy (CuNi10Fe). was super... From 30 kw, the capsule is delivered as a stainless steel-version MPL. The MPL sound insulation casing can be split up and consists of 6-11 parts, depending on the size of the generator. The MPL capsules are also available at an extra cost for generators from 6 kw to 25 kw. The sound insulation material is available in three different versions: 3D - 3 layers, up to 25 mm thick 4DS - up to 5 layers, up to 40 mm thick 6DS - up to 6 layers, up to 60 mm thick GFK Sound insulation capsule is standard for generators up to 25 kw. No additional silencer is necessary. This version must be installed in a wellventilated area due to the heat absorbed by the silencer. The generator is housed within a sound insulation capsule. This is available up to 25 kw. From 12 kw, a three-phase version should be considered, as the Panda generator permits dissymmetrical loads up to 50% per phase. 17 System Components - MultiPlus Inverter / Charger The MultiPlus efficiently combines both inverter and charger technology into one universal unit with up to 2.5 kw continuous performance. MultiPlus units can operate in parallel (up to 5 units) and can be connected to provide three-phase power to suit a wide range of voltage and performance ranges. The MultiPlus features a power-assist function which can be used to support the shore power supply. PowerControl Dealing with limited shore, grid and generator power The MultiPlus is a very powerful battery charger and will draw a lot of current from the generator or shore side supply (almost 10 A per Multi at 230 V AC). The Phoenix Multi Control Panel can be used to govern the maximum current which can be drawn from the generator or shore supply. This enables the multi to take into account other AC loads that are connected and use the remainder for charging. This prevents the generator or shore power supply from being overloaded. Power Assist Boosting the capacity of shore or generator power The Power Assist is a special feature of the MultiPlus which takes the idea of power control to a new dimension and allows the MultiPlus to supplement the capacity of another source. Peak power is usually only required for a short period of time, generally when starting inductive loads such as motors. If the generator or shore supply is insufficient the MultiPlus can compensate for this by adding energy from the battery for a limited period. When the load reduces the spare power is used to recharge the battery. Please note that a minimum shore current of 2A or generator capacity of 2 kw is required per MultiPlus. 18 MultiPlus - Enhancing an AC Generator System The MultiPlus PowerControl and PowerAssist functions allow reduced running time, Fuel consumption, increase generator life and comfort onboard Traditionally, an AC generator is installed and started whenever power is required, however to ensure the optimal running, the generator should not operate with insufficient load or for prolonged periods with excessive (peak) loads. The cost per Watt is higher when AC power is supplied indirectly using an inverter / battery combination rather than directly from the generator. However, significant savings can still be made using indirect power, especially when there are varying periods with lower consumption. When combining the MultiPlus with a Panda AC generator, low AC demands can be covered by the batteries using the inverter within the MultiPlus. This can dramatically decrease the generator running time during typical usage. The MultiPlus can combine power from the generator and battery bank to cover peak periods which may allow a smaller generator to be installed. Example 1: 7.5 kw AC Generator running whenever AC is required The typical AC requirements during a 24 hour period are shown in the example below. There is an AC demand throughout the day for 17 hours with three peak periods. The morning and lunch peaks reach 3kW and the evening peak reaches 6kW. To cover the evening peak of 6kW without overloading the generator, a 7.5kW generator would be required. The generator would be required to run for a total of 17 hours each day and 70% of the running time would require less than 15% of its full capacity Example 3: 5kW generator with MultiPlus (with PowerControl and PowerAssist) When using the MultiPlus s PowerAssist, a smaller generator can cope with same demand as in examples 1 and 2. The bi-directional inverter within the MultiPlus is able to add AC from the batteries to the output of the generator for a short period of time. A MultiPlus 24/3000/70 can add an additional 3kW to the generator output. PowerAssist stops charging at 17:30hrs where the blue line rises above 0 and draws current from the batteries to add to the output of the generator, allowing a smaller 5kW generator to be used. Low AC demands and the lunchtime peak can be covered by the battery bank. The generator is not required to run during these times. The generator only runs to cover the main peaks in the morning and evening which reduces the running time to 5 hours. During this time the remaining AC that is produced by the generator is converted by the MultiPlus and used for battery charging (see where the inverter line dips below zero). PowerControl reduces the current for battery charging at 17:30hrs for a short period during a peak demand period to prevent generator overload. The charge current begins to drop at 20:00hrs as the battery bank is almost fully charged. 19 Shore Power Solutions 1 - up to 16A Shore supply management and the Powerassist function for up to 16A requirements One of the main benefits of being mobile is the ability to stop anywhere you want. Even if the marina or camping ground only has a limited shore power / hook-up connection, you can still draw sufficient AC power without tripping the circuit breakers. You can even charge your batteries when AC demands are low. Shore Power Solutions above 16A Connecting 3 MultiPlus units in parallel for peak demands above 16A The current required may quickly exceed 16A if a washing machine, dishwasher, electric cooker and air conditioning are being used. This may mean that some appliances will not be able to run simultaneously. Connecting Multi s in parallel may be a solution if there is not enough shore power available. 1: Limited shore power and no AC load The Multi regulator is adjusted to match the 4A limitation at the shore power connection to prevent the fuses from tripping. As no AC loads are turned on, the entire 4A can be used for battery charging. 2: Limited shore power and low AC load With a low AC load only drawing 2A from the available 4A is required. The remaining 2A is used for charging the battery bank. The current drawn from the shore power is still only 4A and will not cause the circuit breakers to trip. 3: Limited shore power and medium AC load The water heater switches now on and increases the AC current demand to 10A. The Multi Control Panel limits the shore power drawn to 4A. The PowerAssist function within the MultiPlus enables the bidirectional inverter to supply the additional 6A from the battery bank. As soon as the load reduces, the battery bank will be recharged from the shore power connection. The maximum current drawn from the shore power will not exceed 4A and will not cause the circuit breakers to trip. 4: Sufficient shore power and medium AC load When connecting to a 16A supply, the Multi Control Panel can be set to 16A. The shore power available is 16A and Multi Control Panel is set to 16A. With a medium AC load of 6A, 10A is available for battery charging - this equates to 70A. Three Multi units in parallel can provide maximum charge of 3 x 70 = 210A. The regulator set on the MultiPlus Control Panel prevents the full amount be drawn so the shore power circuit breakers do not trip. 2: Shore power with high AC load The required current is increased to 19A as soon as the washing machine is started. This exceeds the shore power limit. The PowerAssist function within the MultiPlus (master unit) enables the bidirectional inverter to supply the additional 3A from the battery bank. As soon the load reduces, the batteries will be recharged from the shore power connection. The maximum current drawn from the shore power will not exceed 4A and will not cause the circuit breakers to trip. 3: Shore power and very high AC loads The power required will increase dramatically as more appliances are switched on. Now the Multi units will draw 24A from the batteries which would cause them to rapidly discharge. The total discharge of the batteries will be limited as cookers and washing machines generally only require a lot of power for only short periods. Practice has proven, that a 16A shore power connection is often sufficient for most big yachts and luxury mobile homes. If the shore power supply is not available, the AC generator is automatically started. As soon as the shore power supply has been restored, the power can be manually switched back (if required) and the AC generator can be stopped. 21 System Components - Parallel Transfer Unit The Fischer Panda unit is designed for connecting two Fischer Panda AC Generators in parallel. The unit can be used to synchronize both generators to switch the load from one generator to another or both generators to run together and double the total power available. A range of units are available to suit varying generator types and power requirements: up to 22 kw, 40 kw, 65 kw, 85 kw and 100 kw per generator. The parallel power units can be combined with the automatic AC transfer unit into a single housing on request. The parallel transfer unit does not feature loadsharing capabilities for safety reasons. Both generators are coupled and operate together as one unit. To increase operational safety both generators are shutdown if a system failure occurs. Network System Components - VE.NET Connectivity Battery Monitor Module for VE.Net Network The generator control module enables a large number of features from the Fischer Panda generator to be connected into a VE.NET power management and control network. This enables the generator to be controlled and monitored from remote locations if the VE.NET network is fitted with a GSM web module. An electrical switching panel helps you to keep track of the status of equipment on board the vessel. The panel allows all the electrical fuses to be centrally monitored. LEDs provide a visual signal in the event of a problem. As soon as any problem is corrected the fuse distribution box can reset using the panel. Battery Monitor The installation of the battery monitor will give you the information about how much power from your batteries you really are using, when it is being used, how much is remaining and the current charging state. The battery monitor helps prevent nasty surprises such as unexpectedly flat batteries and can even be programmed to start the generator whenever the batteries require charging. Automatic AC Transfer Switch The Filax has been designed to switch sensitive loads, such as computers or modern entertainment equipment from one AC source to another. The priority source is typically a generator or shore power. The alternate source typically is an inverter. With fast switching time (less than 20 milliseconds ) sensitive loads will continue to operate without disruption. The Filax is not intended to supply high power household equipment like washing machines or electric motors. Manual AC Transfer Switch A generator or inverter is required to ensure that your power system can operate independently. A manual transfer switch ensures safe switching between different power sources and prevents multiple power sources from supplying the system simultaneously. System Components - Alternative components Batteries The battery bank is probably the most important source of energy for electrical consumers required for normal operation e.g. navigation, radios, lighting and pumps. With the installation of a MultiPlus, AC can be supplied from a battery bank and a limited shore power connection can be supported to power larger devices for a limited period of time. Power is supplied without any noise because the MultiPlus and battery feature no moving parts Fischer Panda DC Power Systems have been specially developed to supply AC via a battery bank and ensure that the battery bank is efficiently charged and that there is always sufficient power available on demand. Fischer Panda Power Systems are ideal for integration with deep-cycle battery banks using AGM, GEL and Optima Spiral TM batteries. Lightweight Battery Chargers Simple, compact, efficient and intelligent: they provide an effective solution for overnight charging and maintaining smaller battery banks. Ideal for plugging into an AC wall socket or connecting to a distribution box. Completely encapsulated: waterproof, shockproof and ignition protected. Water, oil or dirt will not damage the Blue Power charger. The casing is made of cast aluminium and the electronics are moulded in resin. They can also be used to maintain the ship or vehicle starter batteries. Installation Accessories Whether your power system is being installed in the engine room of a yacht, the hull of a catamaran, inside a mobile home or underneath a truck s chassis, Fischer Panda can provide all the necessary cables, hoses, connection pieces and accessories to ensure that the system can be correctly installed. This also includes when you require specific hose and cable lengths. Service kits are also available for serving the major components such as the engine and generator. The PVMV-N generator is a compact, standard solution for use in vehicle applications. Whisperprop-System with Diesel- Electric Drive Complete drive system comprising generator and electric motor with control. The AGT-DE Generator and permanent magnet motor are extremely efficient and compact. When combined with a Victron Power System it can completely replace the existing on-board power system. Vehicle Generators PVK-U Generators housed in sound-insulated stainless steel capsules which are suitable for mounting externally beneath vehicles. Vehicle Generators PVK-UK Extremely compact and quiet generating set for vehicles featuring an integrated radiator. Suitable for mounting externally beneath vehicle. AGT DC Battery Charging Generators Diesel battery-charging generators with 12, 24 or 48 V. The AGT technology is available from 2.5 to approx. 50 kw. Aziprop Shaft Saildrive System Control Board The System Control Board features a touch screen and gives you full control of your on board devices. Status including level indicators for batteries, supply, fuel and water levels on board the vessel are displayed. Devices, including generator, can be switched on and off via the panel. Power Systems Fischer Panda are supply and build key components for power managment and electrcial distrbution. Automatic AC transfer units for switching from shore to generator power, AC Distribution Units and Parallel Transfer Units for connecting two generators in parallel are available. VICTRON Battery Chargers, Inverters and Combi-units up to 12,5 kw Fischer Panda in cooperation with Victron Energy. Victron inverters are available for 12, 24 and 48 V DC. They can supply up to 12.5 kw parallel or be switched to a 3- phase system. Professional charging units in 12, 24 and 48 V DC with up to 600A. Combi-units including high performance battery chargers are also available. Battery Monitors Easy to use and convenient battery monitoring. The charge level is displayed and prevents batteries from being unexpectedly discharged. This device can automatically start and stop the generator. High-Performance Alternators Compact High Output alternators up to 4 kw, charging rate up to 260 A at 12 V DC. Available in 12 volt or 24 volt DC.
