19 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 01 What is an Off-Grid Solar System? An Off-Grid Solar System consists of solar panels, solar inverter, charge controller and batteries. When sun rays fall on solar panels, DC power is generated. This DC power is then converted into usable AC power to run the connected appliances. The surplus DC power is stored in batteries to be used during power cuts. The inbuilt solar charge controller ensures proper battery charging and prevents reverse flow of current to the solar panels. 02 What is Maximum Power Point Tracking? A maximum power point tracker is a DC to DC converter that optimizes the power conversion between the solar panels and battery bank or utility grid. The charge controller checks the output of the panels, and compares it to the battery voltage. It then decides the best power that the panel can put out to charge the battery. The MPPT solar charge controller then converts it to best voltage to get maximum current into the battery. 03 How is PWM based solar charge controllers different from MPPT based? There are two types of solar charge controllers PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking). The MPPT is a more advanced technology charger than PWM and is meant to extract maximum power from the solar panel to provide the best charging current to the battery. They convert extra voltage of panel into current which increases the output current (Im + Difference due to conversion of extra voltage into current) from the solar system. PWM on the other hand would simply deliver the amount of current equivalent to Im to the battery. 04 How are MPPT based charge controllers better than PWM? As one can figure out an on-grid solar system is 'always connected to the grid'. There is no provision of battery storage in an on-grid system. The connected appliances are powered through available solar and unused solar power is exported to the grid. In an off grid solar system there is a provision of battery backup. 05 How is ATC technology beneficial for me? ATC means automatic temperature compensation. This technology enables your Off grid PCU to detect the ambient temperature surrounding the battery. All batteries require 25 degrees room temperature to function optimally. In case of summers the ambient temperature is high which may lead to overheating and overcharging of the battery. To maintain battery temperature the ATC sensor adjusts the bulk boost voltage of the battery to ensure optimum battery charging and enhance battery performance in all weather conditions.
