1 Exclusive to* Unipart Dorman Sequential Road Lamps

2 Introduction Taper collisions account for a significant percentage of near miss incidents, which not only lead to injuries and fatalities, but can also cause highway congestion, delays and secondary incidents. The cones are frequently struck by vehicles that have failed to see them or exit the closed lane in sufficient time and workers are then in serious danger from the offending vehicle and also airborne cones and lamps etc. Sequential Lamps as a Solution In response to a challenge from the Highways Agency, Unipart Dorman developed the SynchroGUIDE traffic lamp and following a successful trial they were introduced into the market. Since then a sequentially flashing version of the Unipart Dorman ConeLITE Road Danger Lamp has been produced and is also deployed at roadworks across the UK & USA. The lamps work by generating what appears to the driver as a bright spot of light travelling along the line of lamps, where the lamps flash bright in sequence having been triggered by infra-red. This travelling bright spot has the effect of drawing the driver s attention to the approaching taper by increasing the conspicuity of the cone line and thus reducing the collision risk. It also modifies driver behaviour into changing lanes earlier which also reduces the risk of collision. Better informed drivers and saving lives apart, recognised experts in highway traffic safety have independently endorsed the wireless LED sequential warning technology as worthy of nationwide consideration.

3 SynchroGUIDE The Unipart Dorman SynchroGUIDE uses a system of infra-red emitters and detectors contained in each lamp to cause it to flash when the preceding lamp sends a signal to indicate it has flashed. The sequence is based upon a flash rate of 60 Flashes per Minute and a dwell time of approximately 200 milliseconds. What actually happens is that a long sequence of lamps is actually a number of 6 lamp sequences and when the flash gets to the end of a 6 lamp run, it jumps back to the beginning of that short sequence as well as appearing to continue on its way down the (long sequence) chain of lamps. However, our eyes naturally train on the moving sequence and it requires a concerted effort of concentration to see anything other than a continuous stream of light travelling along the cone line. The SynchroGUIDE LED lamp series was designed to be a simply deployable low cost counter measure device, which would not only dynamically enhance the visibility of the work zone merging taper, but at the same time improve driver lane discipline and recognition by providing a directional taper guide. It combines the latest in LED and lens technology with intelligent wireless communications to enable taper deployment lengths of up to 256 lamps with no master or slave relationships. Rapidly deploy in any order and they will sequence instantly. Unlike arrow boards and static lights the delineation is not spot based but is continual for the entire tape length, a critically important feature during hours of darkness and poor weather conditions where visibility is reduced. Trial Report: Sequential Flashing Cone Lamps 1 Based on the UK trial the sequential flashing cone lamps exhibited a much stronger effect on driver lane choice behavior than had been expected. From the statistical analysis of the trial data, it can be concluded that the use of the Sequential flashing cone lamps causes drivers to vacate a closed lane earlier than the use of static road danger lamps. The results show the effect of the sequential lamps is seen consistently from a point 500m before the taper, but also has an effect at a point 600m before the taper in half the cases. As a result of this trial, UK highway agency mandated sequential taper guide deployment on high speed work zone tapes in Highways Agency Trials Team Safe temporary traffic management operations initiative. Trial report: Sequential flashing cone lamps.

4 ConeLITE Synchro TM Many of the features which SynchroGUIDE pioneered such as the infra-red emitter and receivers were upgraded and the electronic circuit was tuned to give maximum light output whilst reducing power consumption. ConeLITE Synchro also delivers a greatly increased worker safety margin by reducing time spent in the taper danger zone deploying and maintaining the lamp. The average battery replacement time is approximately 9 seconds which greatly reduces worker exposure time. Where Air Alkaline Batteries are used the predicted life is greatly increased and the battery continues to perform at very low temperatures (down to -20 C) where the Zinc Carbon Battery will rapidly discharge at anything below freezing point. A further reduction in the amount of visits to the lamp is the superb longevity afforded by the use of Air Alkaline batteries. Given standard ambient temperatures the average time between battery replacements for a ConeLITE Synchro is up to 1400 hours (Amber) & up to 850 hours (Blue). Automatic operation from a single battery, activated by a contact switch when placed on a cone Outstanding performance, high intensity LED coupled with low intensity back light Quick & easy battery change reduces worker exposure Durable high intensity polypropylene body with polycarbonate unidirectional lens Part # Colour Height Width Depth Weight Battery Life Amber 209mm 195mm 242mm 455g* Up to 1,400 HRS Blue 209mm 195mm 242mm 455g* Up to 850 HRS * Excluding battery Pro-B-LITE The Pro-B-LITE can be used alongside the ConeLITE Synchro in the same row. 5 Dual Line Operations There is often a need to put a cone taper into operation over two diverging lanes and Unipart Dorman sequential lamps will easily accommodate this. The high quality infra-red LEDs used in the lamps have a clearly defined 17 beam spread and this limits the amount of cross-reading the two separate lamp lines will suffer. As long as the lamps are placed parallel in each line and the second lamps are placed within five metres of the first lamp in the taper, the synchronising will be automatic and will begin to deliver light streams appearing to run along both sides of the wedge. The photograph below is a screen grab from video footage shot as part of a compliance audit in Michigan USA and illustrates the use of a wedge to separate two lines of traffic. Cost-Benefit Analysis of Sequential Warning Lights in Nighttime Work Zone Tapers 2 Missouri State University published a cost benefit analysis study as part of the Smart Work Zone deployment Initiative (SWZDI) on the deployment of sequential warning lights in night-time work zones. The study was written by US industry recognised research expert Dr. Carlos Sun, who subsequently was invited to deliver a paper on the subject during the 91st 2012 Annual TRB meeting, confirmed that sequential lamps had a net positive effect in reducing the speeds of approaching vehicles, enhancing driver compliances, and reducing late taper merges. Statistically significant decreases of 3.56kmph (2.21mph) mean speed and 1.61kmph (1mph) 85% speed resulted with sequential lights and the percentage of vehicles that merged earlier increased from 53.49% to 65.36%.
