GENERAL SAFETY WARNINGS ALWAYS WEAR A DUST MASK DESIGNED FOR USE WHEN OPERATING A POWER TOOL IN A DUSTY ENVIRONMENT.! WARNING: Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling and other construction activities contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are: Lead from lead-based paints Crystalline silica from bricks, cement and other masonry products Arsenic and chromium from chemically-treated lumber Your level of risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals, work in a well-ventilated area and work with approved safety equipment such as dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles. ELECTRICAL SAFETY WARNING: To avoid electrical hazards, fire hazards or damage to the tool, use proper circuit protection. This tool is wired at the factory for V operation. It must be connected to a V 15 A time delayed fuse or circuit breaker. To avoid shock or fire, replace power cord immediately if it is worn, cut or damaged in any way. 4

POWER TOOL SAFETY GENERAL SAFETY RULES! WARNING: Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious personal injury. WORK AREA Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered benches and dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in potentially explosive environments, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gas or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. Keep bystanders, children and visitors away while operating the tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. ELECTRICAL SAFETY Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized plug only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Do not alter the plug in any way. Double insulation eliminates the need for the three-prong grounded power cord and grounded power supply system. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering the power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the tool or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase the risk of electric shock. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an outdoor extension cord marked W- A or W. These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electric shock. PERSONAL SAFETY Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use the tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothing, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. 5

POWER TOOL SAFETY PERSONAL SAFETY cont d Avoid accidental starting. Be sure the switch is OFF before plugging in or installing the battery. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch, plugging in tools or installing batteries in tools that have the switch ON invites accidents. Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning the tool ON. A wrench or key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in personal injury. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the tool in unexpected situations. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions. TOOL USE AND CARE Use clamps or another practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control. Do not force the tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. Do not use the tool if the power switch does not turn it ON or OFF. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. Disconnect the plug from the power source or remove the battery before making any adjustments, changing accessories or storing the tool. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally. Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the tool s operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool may become hazardous when used on another tool. SERVICE Tool service must be performed only by qualified personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in risk of injury. When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance instructions may create a risk of electric shock or injury. 6

SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES! WARNING: For your safety, do not charge the battery or install the battery in your vacuum until you have read and understood this Owner s Manual.! WARNING: Never use vacuum to remove any flammable liquid such as gasoline. Never submerge the vacuum in water. Severe damage to the vacuum will result. Always make sure the vacuum filter is clean, dry and properly installed in the dust container. Running the vacuum with a dirty or wet filter may cause the motor to overheat. Never run the vacuum without the filter in place. Collected dust will enter the motor and cause damage to the motor. Never allow vacuum to be used if the debris in the container is above the MAX. level line on the side of the container. BATTERY & CHARGER SAFETY Do not store or carry battery in a manner in which metal objects could contact the exposed metal end. Do not place battery in aprons, pockets, drawers, etc. with loose nails, screws, keys etc. The battery could short circuit causing a fire, personal injury or damage to the battery. Never attempt to open the battery for any reason. If the housing of the battery breaks or cracks, immediately discontinue use and do not recharge. Do not charge the battery if it is wet or shows any evidence of corrosion. A small leakage from the battery may occur under extreme usage, charging or temperature conditions. This does not indicate a failure. If however, the outer seal is broken and this leakage gets on your skin, follow these steps: 1. Wash immediately with soap and water. 2. Neutralize with a mild acid such as lemon juice or vinegar. 3. If liquid gets into your eyes, flush immediately with clean water for a minimum of 10 minutes and seek medical attention. NOTE: The battery liquid is a 20 35% solution of potassium hydroxide. Do not incinerate the battery. It can explode in a fire. Do not use an extension cord. Plug the charger cord directly into an electrical outlet. Use the charger only in a standard V 60 Hz electrical outlet. Charge the battery only with the charger supplied with the circular saw. Do not use the charger in wet or damp conditions. It is intended for indoor use only. Do not use the charger near sinks or tubs. Do not immerse the charger in water. 7

BATTERY & CHARGER SAFETY Do not allow the cord to hang over the edge of a table or counter or touch hot surfaces. The charger should be placed away from sinks and hot surfaces. Do not use charger to charge any batteries other than the circular saw batteries. Other batteries may explode. Do not operate charger if cord or plug is damaged. Replace damaged cord and plug immediately. Do not operate charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped or otherwise damaged in any way. Have a qualified technician examine the charger and repair it if necessary. Do not disassemble the charger. For best results, only charge the battery when the temperature range of the battery or work area is between C ( F). Unplug the charger when not in use and before cleaning or maintenance. Do not abuse the cord. To reduce the risk of damage to the electric cord or plug, never carry the charger by the cord or yank the cord to pull the plug. Always grasp the plug and pull to disconnect. Always keep the cord away from heat, oil and sharp edges. NOTE: See Pages 20 & 21 for detailed information on disposal of defective batteries and exercising the battery for peak performance. 8

MAINTENANCE BATTERY PACK REMOVAL AND PREPARATION FOR RECYCLING To preserve our natural resources, please recycle or dispose of batteries properly. This product contains nickel-cadmium batteries. Never dispose of nickel-cadmium batteries in your normal household garbage or in landfill sites as they will add to the pollution of the environment. Consult your local waste authority for information regarding available recycling and disposal options.! WARNING: Upon removal of the battery pack, cover the terminals of the battery pack with electrical or heavyduty adhesive tape. Never touch both terminals with metal objects or body parts as a short circuit may result. Keep away from children. Do not attempt to destroy or disassemble battery pack or remove any of its components. Nickelcadmium batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly. Failure to comply with these warnings could result in fire and serious injury. BATTERY MAINTENANCE For power, long operational life and light weight your tool is powered by a Nickelcadmium battery pack. Nickel-cadmium batteries are powerful, rugged and will provide hundreds of charge/discharge cycles if properly maintained and periodically exercised. Exercising is required to recover most of the capacity lost during usage. This process reduces the size of the active cadmium hydroxide crystals on the anode, to expose all surface area and restore capacity. How to care for your Nickel-cadmium battery 1. Never allow a battery to freeze. 2. Never charge a battery that has been stored at or below 5 or above 40 C. Allow it to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before charging. 3. Do not charge a battery if it feels warm to the touch. 4. Never charge a battery after a short use. Let it sit until it is needed again. 5. Never charge the battery until the tool in which it is being used can not produce useful work. 6. Do not leave a battery on the charger after charging time has expired; usually 3 to 5 hours. Your charger will not damage the battery. However, the heat it produces shortens the battery operational life. 20

HOW TO EXERCISE A NICKEL- CADMIUM BATTERY 1. Every two months or after 30 charge/discharge cycles, whichever comes first, fully discharge your battery. To fully discharge the battery, place it in the tool that it came with and work with the tool until it nearly stops and no longer produces useful action. 2. If the tool came in a kit with a worklight, insert the battery into the light. Turn the switch ON and leave it ON until the filament is cherry red. 3. Let the battery rest for 30 minutes at room temperature (approximately 21 C) before charging. 4. Charge the fully discharged battery for 4 to 5 hours at room temperature. MAINTENANCE 21
