IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS WARNING: Operating the Backup Power System incorrectly or misusing it may damage the equipment or create hazardous conditions for the user. WARNING: Shock hazard, keep away from children. WARNING: Risk of injury or loss of life. Do not use this product in connection with life support systems or other medical equipment or devices. WARNING: Explosion hazard 3
Do not use this product wherever there are flammable fumes or gases, such as in the bilge of a gasoline-powered boat or near propane tanks. Do not use this product in an enclosure containing automotive-type lead-acid batteries. These batteries, unlike the sealed AGM battery in the Backup Power System, vent explosive hydrogen gas which can be ignited by sparks from electrical connections. When working on electrical equipment, always ensure someone is nearby to aid you in case of an emergency. WARNING: Heated surface Ensure at least 3in. (7.5 cm) air space is maintained on all sides of the Backup Power System. During operation, ensure unit is not near or covered by materials that can cause high temperatures such as blankets, pillows and sleeping bags. WARNING: Electric shock hazard Do not remove cover. No user serviceable parts inside. Refer servicing to qualified service personnel. WARNING: Shock and burn hazard A battery can present a risk of electrical shock or burn from high short-circuit current. CAUTION: Risk of damage to the Backup Power System The unit will not work when connected to any AC load that has its neutral conductor connected to ground. Such loads include AC distribution wiring and house wiring. CAUTION: Equipment Damage Do not expose the Backup Power System, to temperatures over 104 F (40 C). PRECAUTIONS FOR USING RECHARGEABLE PRODUCTS WARNING: Explosion and Fire Hazard Follow all instructions published by the battery manufacturer and the manufacturer of the equipment in which the battery is installed. Make sure the area around the battery is well ventilated. Never smoke or allow a spark or flame within the vicinity of the engine or batteries. Be careful not to drop a metal object on the battery. Do not allow a metal tool to simultaneously touch the positive and negative cable ends or battery terminals. It can create an explosion hazard. 4
Remove personal metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches when working with batteries. Batteries produce a short-circuit current high enough to weld a ring or other similar objects to metal, causing a severe burn. If you need to remove a battery, always remove the positive terminal from the battery first. Make sure all accessories are off to avoid risk of hazard. Use safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields which comply with current national standards, or when needed, a face shield. Use as dust mask in dusty work conditions. This applies to all persons in the work area. Make sure there is someone nearby in case of an emergency. Have plenty of fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid contacts skin, clothing and eyes. Wear complete eye and clothing protection. Avoid touching your eyes while working near batteries. If battery acid contacts skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and water. If acid enters your eyes, immediately flood them with cold running water for at least twenty minutes and seek medical attention immediately. Keep a supply of baking soda on hand when working with the batteries. Baking soda neutralizes lead-acid battery electrolytes. Caution: Equipment damage When unit is supplying backup power from its batteries, its output is a non-sinusoidal modified sine wave, which is different from pure sine wave utility-supplied electricity. Certain types of load equipment which require true sine wave power may be damaged. Most rechargeable battery-operated equipment uses a separate charger or transformer that is plugged into an AC receptacle and produces a low voltage charging output. However, some chargers for rechargeable batteries can be damaged if connected to the Backup Power System. DO NOT use the following with the Backup Power System: Small battery-operated products such as flashlights, electric razors, and night lights that can be plugged directly into an AC receptacle to recharge. Some chargers for battery packs used in power tools. These chargers display a warning label stating that dangerous voltages are present at the battery terminals. NOTE: If you are uncertain of compatibility with Backup Power System, contact the equipment manufacturer to determine the rechargeable product s compatibility with the modified sine wave (non-sinusoidal) AC wave form. Attention: Charge unit before use Charge the Backup Power System immediately after purchase. Recharge after each use and at least once every 90 days. 5
CAUTION: Equipment damage Some products, including the types listed below, may be damaged if they are connected to the Backup Power System: Speed controllers found in some fans Power tools Kitchen appliances Metal halide arc (MHI) lights FEATURES Feature Description 1 Power button: turns Backup Power System ON and OFF when pressed for half a second. Important: Unit should only be used and stored in a temperature-controlled, indoor area and placed away from direct sunlight, moisture or conductive contaminants. Allow a minimum of 3in. (7.5 cm) of space around the unit for ventilation. Important: this Backup Power System must be charged immediately before storage or use. This will protect the battery inside from damage and will ensure extended usage run time. A complete charge may take up to 20 hours when recharged from a 120V AC wall outlet. CAUTION Do not plug surge-protected power bars into the unit s 120V AC outlets Do not connect an AC power source to the 120V AC outlets. Do not connect the unit s AC power cord to its 120V AC outlets. To install the Backup Power System: 1. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not into a surge protector, power strip, or power bar). 2. Connect your AC-powered devices or small household appliances to one or more of the five 7
AC outlets of the Backup Power System. 3. Turn on the unit by pressing the power button for half a second. The green AC power LED confirms that the backup power system is ON and ready to provide backup power. When the battery needs recharging, the LED screen flashes CHg two times, then the battery capacity (%) once. This pattern of flashing continues until the battery capacity reaches 100% and FUL appears on the screen. Important When installing the UBPS, ensure that there is a minimum of 3in. (7.5 cm) of space around the unit for optimal ventilation. Backup power features The unit s 120V AC outlets are permanently backed up by the internal battery. To activate the AC outlets, turn on the unit using the power button. During a power outage or other utility problem (such as brownouts and over-voltages), the Backup Power System will keep your AC-powered products, office equipment, or small household appliances powered, depending on the power draw of your application. When utility power is restored, the unit automatically recharges its internal battery. Important: When connected to utility power, the unit automatically provides AC power from its internal battery when the utility voltage falls outside the V AC range.
