This can be achieved by the application of power electronics with bidirectional power converters. The project will cover the following activities: Review of power electronics converter topologies Study types and features of renewable energy resources Understanding recent technologies for smart and micro grid technologies Identify topologies and merits of bidirectional converters Simulation analysis Experimental validation Conclusions and suggestions C V2G

"Efficiency Improvement of Diesel/Gas Standby Generation Units" Students 1- Abdel Rahman Ramadan 2- Amgad Rabeh 3- Ahmed Ibrahim Abbas 4- Mohab Mohamed Nagib 5- Abdel Rahman Ahmed sadek 6- Omneya Ali Supervisor Dr. Ahmed Kadry Abdelsalam Supplying rural areas and securing electricity in critical site are mandatory tasks conventionally performed by standby generation units. Conventional fossil fuel are utilized in such generators mainly, diesel and gas. These generators are common for their polluted exhaust, rough start, low efficiency and high fuel consumption. Integrating Hydrogen in internal combustion engines was proved for efficiency improvement. Yet, several questions arise like How to locally generate Hydrogen safely? What is the effect on variable loading conditions? The proposed project aims at designing a full solution for high performance standby generation unit with photovoltaic based hydrogen generation locally produced. The enriched hydrogen contributes to decrease emissions, minimize carbon deposits on the engine cylinders, and consequently improve the overall system efficiency.

Students "Photovoltaic Module Integrated Converter" 1- Mohamed Diaa El Dein 2- Hesham Osman Hussein 3- Mohamed Ahmed Khalaf Hareedy 4- Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed El Ashaal 5- Omar Mohamed Shehata 6- Mohamed Abdel Fattah Mohamed Supervisor Dr. Ahmed Kadry Abdelsalam Dr. Rania Assem Renewable energy sources are gaining a booming interest in the last decade due to the fear from fossil fuel resources depletion and pollution environmental aspects. Among the various renewables, photovoltaic (PV) energy is of special interest due to direct conversion to electricity, low maintenance and minimal running cost. For efficiency and performance aspects, the grid interfacing of PV panels requires low cost, high performance tailored-designed power electronic based converters that enable sufficient maximum power tracking and grid integration functions. The proposed project aims at fully designing a low-cost, high performance, commercial-ready PV module integrated converter passing from design to prototype stages. Two topologies are investigated: i) micro-inverter and ii) string inverter.

Solar Boat Students 1. Nada Adel Gobran 2. Mahmoud Fouad Nasar 3. Islam Abd Ellatef 4. Ahmed Morad 5. Tarek Sherif Dewedar Dr. Ahmed El-Shenawy Dr. Ahmed Khalifa (Marine Engineering) This project is going to explore the possibility of making a boat that is powered solely from the sun. The team will then design and make a working model. It is generally thought that solar power is limited to sunny locations. However, contrary to what most people think, solar panels still can get energy if the sky is overcast but they do not absorb as much energy. Therefore, designing a solar powered boat for the use in Egypt. Currently, there is huge amount of research going into solar power and many new technologies are being discovered. Over the past few years new flexible and light solar panels2 have being invented and because of those it will be much easier to make a solar powered boat

"Advanced Automation Design for an Industrial system" Students 1- Ali Ahmed Ibrahim 2- Galal Mahmoud 3- Mahmoud Ali Mahran Supervisor: Dr. Mostafa Abdel-Geliel Modern Industrial plants consist of multi-machines; each one achieves a certain task such as preparing subsystem, processing subsystem and handling subsystem in production industries. Moreover, each subsystem handles a large number of devices such as sensors and actuators. All the subsystems should be integrated and co-operated in a certain ways in order to perform the required tasks in a good way with high quality, availability, efficiency and safety in addition to more economically. Therefore advanced automated system became mandatory in industrial system The purpose of the project is to design and implement an automation system for an industrial prototype. The automated system should cover: 1- The basic control task using PLC and PC based system; 2- Supervision task using SCADA system and; 3- Advanced Control methodology 4- Communication networks in order to monitor system locally and remotely.

Students Diesel-Solar Hybrid Boat 1- Nourhan Essam El Dein 2- Mohamed Said Khalil 3- Abdel Rahman Adel 4- Abdel Salaam Mohamed Abdallah 5- Mikheal Samir Ramzy 6- Ahmed Samir Abdel Kader Associate Prof. Mostafa Saad The electric/hybrid boat market is heating up with new models as well as repower options. This projects aims to design the electric power system of a diesel-solar hybrid boat. This is to supply power to the boat electric loads and the drive system. Two available drive modes: diesel or electric. A marine diesel engine and a fully electronically managed electric motor/generator (em/g), which provides electrical power when driven by the diesel engine (charging the batteries and supplying power to on-board consumers. Additionally the em/g is coupled to a gearbox, which drives the propeller. A solar roof array keeps the batteries fully charged and provides additional energy for the boat s electric drive system. An inverter/charger system charges the battery and produces AC power supply throughout the boat at all times. Grid connection function is available to inject and sell the converted/stored solar power into the grid when the boat is anchored.

Reduction of Torque pulsation of Permanent magnet Synchronous Generator using 36 pulse series type rectification Students 1- Mohamed Hosny El Said 2- Mohamed Omar Abdel Rahman 3- Seif El Islam Mohamed 4- Mohamed Mahmoud El kouny 5- Mohamed Ibrahim Alian 6- Mohamed Gaber Shehab Prof. Yasser Gaber Dessouky Non-sinusoidal currents from electrical machines may cause overheating. The electromechnical torque of the prime mover driving the electrical generators is affected by the supplied current waveform. Therefore, if the current is not sinusoidal, there will be torque pulsations on the shaft between the generator and the prime mover whose value depends on the harmonics distortions of the current. In renewable energy conversion such as wind and wave, the shaft speed is not fixed. Therefore the output voltage and frequency of the AC generator is changing. Consequently the generated power is converted to DC and then back to AC to be connected to the grid. Since the load on the generator is not linear, the produced current contains harmonics and there will be torque pulsation on the shaft between the generator and the prime mover. Some techniques are used to eliminate these harmonics from the generator current. One of which is the pulse series type rectification, as shown in the figure below where 24 pulse series type rectification is implemented.

In this project, 36 pulse series type rectification will be designed and implemented. In the project, the following steps will be performed: 1. Literature review will be carried out for harmonic reductions 2. The existing 24 pulse series type rectification will be reviewed and simulated. 3. The 36 pulse series type rectification will be designed, simulated using matlab software and experimentally implemented. 4. This technique will be tested on the IMPS Generator and its effectiveness of reducing the harmonics and thus the torques pulsation on the shaft will be measured.
