4 RVAC Ring main unit Currently, the development of a grid system is focused on application of ecological resources, requiring a medium-voltage switchgear which is characterised by energy conservation, low operating cost, reliable performance and flexible configuration. Featuring long service life, compact structure and reusability, the RVAC RMUs have become a role model economically and ecologically. With rapid development of urbanisation, the improvement and perfection of buried cable system has loomed large in terms of equipment and many other aspects. Ring main units (RMU), as the main equipment for protection and sectional isolation of the buried cable system, have been widely used in the urban grid system with their safe and reliable performance, compact and pleasant appearance, and outstanding cost performance. As the leader in the distribution switch gear field, Eaton Cooper Power Systems (ECPS) started design and production of high-quality distribution switchgears as early as 1942, with over 2,000,000 switchgears in proper operation throughout the world up to now. RVAC RMUs are fully sealed and insulated switchgears developed by ECPS exclusively for the cable system, and have been extensively applied in the urban grid system across the country since introduction in 1995 with their excellent operating performance. RVAC RMU s are characterized by the following: Insulation using SF6 gas Three position SF6 Switch as the breaking device in the load switch unit to break rated current Vacuum arc-extinguishing chamber as the breaking device in the circuit breaker unit to break short-circuit current. Based on the design principles of all insulation and omniseal, all primary parts of a RVAC RMU are fully enclosed in the SS main case, free from condensation and foreign materials. 5 RVAC ring main unit construction features Smart grid readiness The RVAC RMU s product design, remote communication, remote metering and remote control are adopted for feeder automation and load management of the smart grid. Eaton is the first enterprise to develop proprietary technologies for copper-chromium alloy contactor and inner shield; The arc-extinguishing chamber developed by Eaton for contactor has a long service life of 2,500,000 operations; Over 5,000,000 arc-extinguishing chambers of various types have been applied in the grids at different ambient conditions; Almost all of global high-end electrical equipment manufacturers are our purchasers of our arc-extinguishing chambers. Product design All primary HV components are enclosed in SF6 gas tank, free from ambient conditions and maintenance and ensuring full insulation; SF6 gas tank is made of SS materials, presenting enduring pleasant appearance and free from salt water, wet, foreign materials and external temperature; The main case has the protection grade of IP67 and is equipped with Cooper prefab shielded touchable cable accessories, allowing for longterm operation underwater or at other extreme conditions. Advanced gas shielded welding and the pressure seal system with the leak rate of 1 /a is available, ensuring a service life of 30 years; The option of an extensible busbar is available. As standard, the busbar is not extensible. The load switch is a three-position switch for opening, closing and grounding. The movable blade at the opening position provides enough insulation distance. Opening and closing of master switch and grounding switch can be available respectively with one operating handle, and master switch and grounding switch are mechanically interlocked. Arc-extinguishing with deionised metal grating for load switch ensures excellent breaking performance; The operating mechanism controls moving speed of contactor of the load switch so that the switch on and off speed of the load switch will not vary with operators. When the switch undergoes closing to opening, arc is extinguished and current is cut off relying on contactor speed and simultaneous action of arch-extinguishing device; The operating mechanism is of spring type. Opening and closing can be available with an operating handle, and remote control can also be realised by installation of electrical operating mechanism and opening solenoid. 7 Product features The capacitive voltage detection system is used to validate whether the power is safely isolated or not. Various cabinets for RVAC series are equipped with the standard threephase capacitive voltage detection system to detect potential of circuits, the potential indicator effectively detects and communicates to operators whether a circuit is live or not. Logic mechanical and electrical interlock preventing mal-operation In RVAC design, different interlocks are adopted to prevent mal-operation by operators. The interlock includes mechanical interlock and electrical interlock. For example, electrical interlock and mechanical interlock can prevent operation of the disconnector when the breaker is switched on. All mechanical interlocks adopt effective direct locking. The switch can be operated to power supply position only when the door of cable chamber is closed. The door of cable chamber can be opened only when the switch is at the grounding position. The grounding switch can be switched off only when the door of cable chamber is completely closed. The master switch can be closed only when the grounding switch is opened to supply power. Enclosed cases to keep out foreign materials. In RVAC design, it is impossible that operators or tools unintentional entering the cabinets. Human-oriented design. The design of all compartments in RVAC cabinet is based on the concept of safe touch from the outside. With human-oriented design, operators will not be injured by motion parts or protruding parts when operating the panel. Delivery test. RUM s are subject to strict process test and delivery test in accordance with relevant regulations. For quality assurance, all production processes conform to ISO9001. This means relevant components, switches and current transformers will be tested at each production phase to confirm their conformance. After the equipment is assembled as a piece, appearance inspection, mechanical, functional and electrical tests will be conducted for the complete set. Concept of internal Arc prevention Eaton has always been committed to production of safe switchgear for operators. For operators, the biggest potential risk is internal arc inside the switchgear. Therefore, the designers employ all necessary methods to prevent internal arc in design of the product. As required under GB3906, Eaton supports the philosophy that it is best to avoid internal arcs than to cure. In the RVAC design, a double prevention method is implemented. Firstly, RVAC design adopts a structure in which arcs are internally prevented. This is a global phenomenon. The media previously used for insulation and arc extinguishing (air, oil and solids) has critical defects as follows: The air insulation system occupies large space and needs to be maintained at extreme weather or ambient conditions The oil insulation system is free from influence of ambient conditions, but will cause high safety risks in case of internal failure The solid insulation system needs to be maintained, much like the air insulation system. However, the maintenance proves to be more difficult due to its compact structure. As a medium for insulation, SF6 gas has rather high dielectric strength so that the product can have a very compact structure and be free from maintenance as all live parts are enclosed. SF6 gas is non-toxic, inert, and heavier than air in electronegativity. In addition to insulation, it has outstanding arc-extinguishing capability. When high-temperature arc occurs due to circuit breaking, SF6 gas will decompose into sub-fluorides. After cooling, these active sub-fluorides will turn to SF6 gas swiftly. As a result, enclosed SF6 gas will not decrease or deteriorate after numerous arc extinguishing in long-term use. The amount of arc decomposer is relevant to moisture contained in SF6 gas. Therefore, it is very important to keep water content under specified alue. Absorbents such as activated aluminum oxide, activated carbon or synthetic zeolite are commonly used to remove water and arc decomposer. This means the initial volume of gas that was introduced serves as the operating mechanism throughout its entire service life. When insulation alternatives are assessed on advantages and potential risks there is yet to be a more suitable solution than SF6 when considering technical and ecological factors. Instruction for SF6 Disposal 1. Eaton s policies prohibit emission of SF6 into air at installation, maintenance or scrapping of the equipment. SF6 which cannot be recovered or reused, can be disposed in an environmentalfriendly way to finally generate natural products CaSO4 and CaF2. 2. 12 Main components Voltage indicator This device, with holes for phase comparators, on all functional units makes it possible to check the presence (or absence) of voltage in cables. Cooper screened separable connectors Fault indicator Connection mode This indicator is used for detecting and indicating ground fault and short-circuit fault in corresponding cable sections. The indicator light flashes and sounds an alram when short-circuit fault or single-phase ground fault occurs in the power distribution system. The Cooper screened separable connectors are used for the connection of extruded polymeric cable to transformers, switchgear, motors and other equipment with a premolded screened separable connectors for XLPE insulated 1 or 3-core cabled with aluminum or copper conductors. Extension interface The extension interface is used for future extensions connected to another RVAC module. Busbar Linker Busbar linkers connect existing module RVAC with another module RVAC. Busbar ender stop Use the Busbar ender stop to protect the main busbar bushing when the cabinet is reserved for future expansion on extension interface, and the busbar linker is not installed. The power is supplied from line current through CT, so over current, instantaneous trip and ground protection for distribution network lines could be achieved without auxiliary power supplies by driving low power trip coils.
