4 Are your clients sitting Comfortably? Sitting requires more effort than we think... A well designed seat helps prevent fatigue and other complaints ensuring the body adopts the most natural posture. For us, sitting is a background activity which we do when we re concentrating on something else like driving, using the computer or talking to friends on the phone. We don t have to think about sitting until it becomes too place. We rotate our trunk, support our shoulders and head through our arms and elbows, twist, turn, even lie across the chair without a second thought. 5 Are your clients sitting Comfortably? Intestine Trouble An excessively low seat with an acute angle between the torso and upper legs can give rise to intestinal problems. Blocking of Veins/Nerves An excessively high sitting position with legs swinging can lead to veins and nerves becoming blocked causing varicose veins and sleeping legs and numbness. Back Pain & Poor Posture Inappropriate cushioning can result in sinking and slumping back into a convex shape contributing to back pain and other related joint and muscle ailments. Call:

6 The Science of Good Seating In order to ensure the body assumes the correct natural anatomical position and optimal sitting posture, all the features of a chair must be tailored to each individual s exact measurements. Ensuring correct seat height, depth and angle, combined with correct armrest height and lumbar support will in turn result in a healthy and comfortable position. 7 Pressure Management What is a pressure sore? Intelli-Gel A pressure ulcer is an injury to the skin and the tissue under it. Sitting or lying in the same position blocking oxygen and vital nutrients from maintaining healthy tissue. When the tissue becomes starved for too long it begins to die and a pressure sore starts to form. Pressure sores can be referred to as pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers. Damage from a pressure sore will range from slight discoloration of the skin (stage 1) to open sores that go all the way to the bone (severe). Whilst there are many aetiological factors that contribute to the development of pressure damage the largest single cause is unrelieved pressure. Other factors include malnutrition, incontinence, altered levels of consciousness and or/sensation whilst extrinsic factors look towards pressure, friction, shear, temperature and moisture. It is pressure damage as it is often a combination of the above factors. 26 Terms & Conditions Fabrics All chairs are available in a wide choice of fabrics suitable for the healthcare environment and are;- Fully waterproof Anti-bacterial CRIB 5 tear. While a heavy duty vinyl maybe appropriate for clients with behaviour problems, or where a chair is being pushed round corridors and at risk of snagging, a vapour permeable fabric will complement pressure relieving foams far more effectively. We recommend the fabrics are cleaned with mild detergent and water, and any stains must be cleaned immediately otherwise they may leave permanent marks/ discolouration.
