4 We Put Power First GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS Setup and Operation All Solar Emergency Preparedness signs and solar powered kits are programmed to function for the sunlight and weather conditions of the sign's installation location using NASA solar insolation data. Once installed, PVI Solar's Powerline solar energy management technology self-calibrates and adapts to local weather patterns, change of seasons and actual sunlight levels, while adjusting for ambient light factors such as adjacent street lights and stray car lights. PVI Solar signs are designed to reliably operate off-grid using 100% solar energy for up to 8 days without sunshine. To operate best, signs must be placed in an area which receives full sunshine from 8 am to 3 pm. Some minor shadows may partially shade the sign's solar panels during the day, as PVI's energy management controls do adjust for some intermittent shading. Signs that are placed in significantly shaded locations will require using PVI Solar's Integrated Solar / Grid-assist (ISG ) technology, which combines solar and supplemental grid-sourced electric power. ISG technology is designed to use solar energy as its primary source of power with electricity from the utility grid only sourced during periods of low solar energy or high lighting demands. All solar energy collected is stored in eco-friendly batteries. (No energy is sent to the utility grid no net metering) Solar Emergency Preparedness Signs may face any directional orientation. The sign's solar panels are designed to collect and store solar energy from various directions, eliminating the need for the sign to face south. PVI solar signs light brighter and for more hours each night than do any competitive products available today. Solar powered lighting must however be customized to your specific lighting needs. The brightness level of a solar sign will depend upon the sign's installation location and number of hours lit each night. To optimize energy usage, the Powerline solar power management controls recognize seasonal changes in dusk and dawn times and vary the sign's on/off times. The sign can also be programmed to turn off late at night so that more collected sun energy can be used to light the sign brighter during early evening hours or before dawn. Reliable, long term solar sign operation in cold northern or hot southern climates of the U.S. is another feature of PVI Solar products. PVI's solar signs are designed and tested at our facility in New York's Hudson Valley to operate for 14 hours per night during the cold winter months of the Northeast U.S. when the sun is lowest in the sky and shadows and nights are their longest. In addition, the Powerline solar power management system utilizes advanced survival controls which conserve power by automatically reducing light levels during heavy winter storms or when excessive daylight shading limits sun energy collection. The Powerline solar power management system also effectively operates solar signs in the bright sun locations of the Southwest US where sun power is plentiful but high temperatures are detrimental to battery storage. Special high temperature solar-grade batteries and temperature monitoring controls in PVI solar signs optimize energy charging and battery protection. These features enable maximum sign lighting levels while also extending normal battery life. Startup and Maintenance Solar Emergency Preparedness Signs are shipped ready to operate. All sign electronics run at an intrinsically safe 24 volts or less and do not require a licensed electrician to install the sign. When shipped, the sign's solar panel assembly and battery cabling are disconnected to allow for extended storage before use, but are simple to connect. Once the sign is installed and the solar panel and battery cables are connected, the sign will automatically initiate a startup sequence to diagnose its status and report its readiness to operate. The sign will immediately start operating and will begin calibrating to its location and conditions. Solar powered signs require very little maintenance. The solar panels are installed at an angle that facilitates natural cleaning with each rainfall. PVI Solar warranties its signs for five (5) years from the date of shipment. The solar panels have a 25-year manufacturer's warranty and the advanced LED lighting system has a year life-cycle.
