As we all know, the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening, resulting in an intermittent availability of solar energy. In a typical grid-tie solar application, the electricity generated by solar panels is fed directly to the grid through a grid-tie inverter. That grid-tie inverter needs to sync to the grid to operate if the grid goes down in a blackout, the grid-tie inverter shuts down until the grid returns. With an off-grid or backup power application, batteries combined with an inverter/charger and solar array will convert stored energy from the batteries and create its own grid within your home to power your critical loads.
