3 Energy-efficient, flexible, reliable VLT OneGearDrive comprises a highefficiency permanent magnet (PM) motor coupled to an optimised bevel gearbox. As part of the Danfoss VLT FlexConcept the drive is an energyefficient drive system that helps to optimise plant productivity and reduce energy costs. The VLT FlexConcept comprises the VLT OneGearDrive, combined with a VLT Decentral Drive FCD 302 or VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 frequency converter. Cost reductions with drive control The VLT OneGearDrive features a PM motor, which is a three-phase synchronous non-salient motor. The OneGearDrive can achieve up to 89% efficiency and high torque, already exceeding the IE4 Super Premium Efficiency class, in a compact motor frame. With only one motor type and three available gear ratios, the motor concept covers all typical versions of conveyor drives commonly used in the food and beverage industry. For conveyor drives in particular, this system dramatically simplifies project her the plant operator opts for a centralised or decentralised drive configuration. Optimised components fewer variants The VLT OneGearDrive uses optimised bevel gearing, which is more efficient than commonly used worm gears. Savings in operations and maintenance In the past, the various production areas: manufacturing, filling, packaging, palletising, and storage required a variety of drive concepts. Since then, the evolution of variable speed drives has brought the drive/cage motor combination to a high peak of performance, capable of matching that of even servo drives. Hygienic design required Especially in food and beverage production areas, but also in pharmaceutical and cosmetic manufacturing plants, hygiene compliance rules are extremely demanding. This is why Danfoss has designed the VLT OneGearDrive to comply with the rules of the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG). EHEDG provides the specifications and guidelines for the comprehensive, proactive protection of food from contamination with bacteria, fungi and yeasts during processing. In the VLT OneGearDrive Danfoss has utilised years of experience in process and mechanical engineering, as well as knowledge in microbiology, to create a competitive, cost efficient solution that can easily be integrated into any production setup. 5 Use fewer variants run a higher number of applications VLT OneGearDrive one gear size Compared to traditional systems, the compact design of the VLT OneGearDrive makes it a strong choice that can provide benefits in transport and conveying systems as well as machines and equipment. With only one motor type and three gear ratios available, the motor concept covers all typical conveyor drives. Furthermore, the restricted range of physical configurations of the OneGearDrive simplifies spares holding and makes it more cost efficient, easing engineering and installation thanks to uniform mechanical dimensions. Flexible plant design In combination with the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 or the VLT Decentral Drive FCD 302 the VLT OneGearDrive is equally suited to central and decentral installations, giving the plant designer complete flexibility from the outset. A high breakaway torque is obtained and three gear ratios (5.92, 14.13, 31.13) are available. With a cable length of 150 m (screened) and 300 m (unscreened) between frequency converter and VLT OneGearDrive, all conditions for conveyor drives in the food & beverage applications are fulfilled. Less expensive, fewer variants Due to the PM motor there are lower losses, a smaller moment of inertia, a wide torque and speed range and a high short-term overload capability, enabling high maximum torque over a wide speed range. This gear motor is a drive which, considered over its lifetime, is less expensive than conventional geared motor units (GMUs). Long service intervals The VLT OneGearDrive runs 35,000 operating hours in partial operation between oil changes (by using food grade oil). This means long service intervals, low maintenance costs and effort, and low operating cost. 6 SEPTEMBER 2010 Hygienic design Food safety In food and beverage production areas where the product may come into direct contact with equipment and motors, the hygienic design of process equipment has a tremendous impact on diminishing the risks of contamination, which also means that the shelf life of products is improved. If the applied process equipment is of a poor hygienic design, it is difficult to clean it of micro-bacterial contamination. New hygienic trends EU regulations for the compliance of hygienic equipment to be used in the manufacturering of popular food and beverages are becoming increasingly tight. For example, in the beverage industry, still water, fruit juices and alcohol free beers are all highly reactive to external influences. New packaging materials also raise the demands on the hygienic conditions. Plastic packaging for cosmetics, including PET bottles in the drinks industry, require new measures as they do not tolerate heat sterilization or cleaning that previously rendered glass containers aseptic. Both solutions offer advantages depending of the system structure. The choice of solution relies upon a variety of factors such as spatial and environmental conditions, the extent of the system and the acceptability to the end user. Economic aspects also figure, such as cabinet or control room costs compared to cabling expenditure. Application-dependent design Ultimately, the application dictates the system design. It is essential to engage with the drives supplier to conduct an accurate, detailed system cost-analysis. Since service staff and technicians will have to gain familiarity with the technology adopted, acceptability by the end user is critical. Both solutions include the option of shifting the system intelligence to the individual drives. Such a shift increases efficiency depending on the drives functionality required. In addition to the applicable EU standards and guidelines, the regulations of the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) also apply. This organization develops specifications and guidelines for the comprehensive, preventative protection of food against impurities and unwanted contamination by bacteria, fungus and yeast during processing. 19 Access all areas robust, reliable and clean Wet and hygiene critical areas VLT FlexConcept offers distinct advantages in wet production areas. The Decentral Drive FCD 302 enclosure, along with the matched, geared motor enclosure, fulfils the requirements of DIN Hygienic Design and all enclosures are designed to IP 66/67 and IP 69k. The system components offer no hiding place for contaminants or harmful micro-organisms such as bacteria, yeast or fungus. The smooth, fan-free design of both motors and drives avoids the circulation or distribution of dirt particles and germs and eliminates the possibility of aerosol formation and the subsequent contamination of products under manufacture, making them ideally suited for use in wet production areas. A positive benefit of mounting the VLT Decentral FCD 302 close to or on the motor is the cable reduction. This not only saves space but eliminates electromagnetic interference with other system components. A typical combination might be a VLT OneGearDrive with a VLT Decentral Drive FCD 302. In a centralized system, a VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 with the same unified control strategy would be used with the VLT OneGearDrive as it could support up to 300 m of unshielded cables or 150 m of shielded cables. Dry areas For conveyors in dry areas, a standard VLT FlexConcept solution would be the efficient, compact VLT OneGear- Drive Standard with either a VLT Decentral FCD 302 or a VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 mounted centrally. This drive solution could be equipped with a motor mounted brake and a transmitter, for greater precision, particularly on conveyor belts with inclines or declines. VLT Decentral Drive FCD 302 is completely flexible in adoption and can of course be mounted in centralised system structures, on the wall close to the motor, on the conveyor or even on the motor itself. The matrix below gives an overview of the recommended combinations of motors and drives for differing production areas.
