2 2 The Automotive Industry in Missouri Missouri is a center for automotive manufacturing excellence, supported by a cost-competitive, probusiness and innovative environment. In 2017, Missouri automotive manufacturers built more than 756,000 vehicles, and since 2010 more than $2.36 billion has been invested in Missouri s automotive facilities. Every Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana is born in Missouri. Many of the Ford Transit vans and more than 300,000 Ford F-150s are made here. According to a 2013 study from the Brookings institution, Kansas City is the second-largest U.S. automotive trading hub behind Detroit. 6 6 OTHER FABRICATED METAL PRODUCT MANUFACTURING PLASTIC PRODUCT MANUFACTURING PAINT, COATING, AND ADHESIVE MANUFACTURING RUBBER PRODUCT MANUFACTURING Recent automotive expansions Americana Tire and Wheel (Marshfield) announced plans in 2014 to invest $1.5 million to open a Missouri assembly plant, creating 20 new jobs. The company manufactures trailer tire and wheel assemblies. Dana Light Axle Products (Columbia) announced plans to expand their Missouri manufacturing plant in 2016, which produces parts for Ford, GM and Nissan. The $39 million expansion is expected to create 135 new jobs. Diode Dynamics (HQ St. Louis) recently announced plans to expand its automotive lighting manufacturing operations, leasing a 15,000-square-foot engineering facility that will enable the company to hire nearly 200 new employees over the next three years. Fargo Assembly of PA, Inc., (Bethany) a supplier of power and signal distribution systems and components, completed a new facility in Missouri in 2015, creating over 100 jobs. GWR Safety Systems (St. Louis) recently established its North American headquarters in Missouri. The company designs and manufactures seat belts for coaches, shuttle buses, school buses, recreational vehicles, agricultural equipment and military vehicles. Faurecia (Wentzville) inaugurated its new automotive seating plant in Wentzville in The facility represents a $13 million investment and employs 180 people. Faurecia produces seats for the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon truck lines produced at the GM Wentzville plant.

7 7 Ford (Kansas City) produces the best-selling vehicle in North America, the F-150, at its Kansas City Assembly plant. Since 2011, Ford has announced over 4,000 new jobs and $1.1 billion investment at the plant. General Motors (St. Louis) created 750 new jobs in 2015 at their Wentzville plant to help with the production for the all-new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups and Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans. In late 2015 and early 2016, GM invested $82.3 million dollars at Wentzville for new materials and equipment, environmental, and facilities improvements. Since 2011, GM has announced plans to create over 2,400 jobs and $500 million capital investment in their Wentzville plant. Grupo Antolin (Kansas City) opened a new $15.7 million, 150,000 square-foot automotive manufacturing facility in 2014 to supply Ford s Kansas City Assembly Plant, creating an estimated 118 new jobs. The new facility produces headliners for the all-new Ford Transit van. In 2016, the company announced plans to expand into a new 36,000 square foot space in Subtropolis. The company now employs about 300 at various sites around Kansas City. Grupo Gruau (Kansas City) recently established their US headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. Gruau, founded in France in 1889, is the top company in Europe for LCV conversions. Today, they convert more than 50,000 vehicles a year for companies around the world. Janesville Acoustics (Warrensburg) opened a $13.4 million, 155,000 square-foot automotive manufacturing facility in Warrensburg in 2014 to supply GM s Fairfax Assembly Plant, creating 164 full-time jobs. Leggett & Platt, Inc. (HQ Carthage) has announced two major auto related expansions in Missouri in recent years. Leggett & Platt Commercial Vehicles Products (CVP), signed a lease for a 72,000 sq. ft. facility in Hunt Midwest s Subtropolis in 2015 which will employ about 50. Leggett & Platt CVP installs interior racking shelving systems, wall liner packages, exterior ladder racks and decals, and mobile offices for the Ford Transit. The company s Flex-O-Lators facility in Carthage, which manufactures automotive seating components, expanded in 2013, adding 28,000 square feet and 12 jobs. LMV Automotive Systems (Kansas City) employs approximately 340 people at its Liberty facility where it manufactures welded body assemblies for automakers. In 2012, the company broke ground on a $42 million 213,000-sq. ft. facility to produce parts for the all-new Transit van, assembled at Ford s Kansas City plant. After securing a contract with another major auto manufacturer in 2014, LMV embarked on a $48.7 million addition to its new facility, adding another 256,600 square feet. LMV is a subsidiary of Magna International, the world s second-largest automotive supplier. Magna also has a facility seating in Excelsior Springs. Martinrea Riverside, (Kansas City) opened a new auto manufacturing facility in Riverside in 2015, creating 290 new jobs. This is the first Missouri location for the company, which is a subsidiary of the Canadian Tier One automotive supplier Martinrea International Inc. The facility manufactures corrosion-resistant engine cradles using an e-coating process, supplying the GM plant in Fairfax, Kansas. Orange EV, (HQ Riverside) a startup that makes electricdriven terminal trucks, announced plans to double its staff (to 15) by the end of 2015 and move to a new plant in Riverside that s six times the size of its original headquarters. Spartan Light Metal Products (HQ St. Louis) expanded and retooled its facility in Mexico, Missouri in 2014, creating 88 new jobs and making a capital investment of $17 million. The company also has a facility in Hannibal. U.S. Farathane (Riverside) opened its first Missouri production facility in The $51.5 million project is expected to create 267 jobs over the course of three years. The company produces injection molded plastic parts for the Chevrolet Malibu, the Ford F-150, and the Transit Van. Yanfeng USA Automotive Trim Systems (Riverside) opened a new $45 million manufacturing plant in Riverside in 2014, creating 263 jobs. The Michigan-based subsidiary of Yanfeng Visteon of China is an industry leader in interior component supplies for companies such as General Motors and Chrysler.

The Emerson Center for Engineering Manufacturing is a 31,000-square-foot facility on the St. Louis Community College campus featuring state-of-the-art tooling and equipment. The center includes 14,000 square feet of lab space and classrooms dedicated to manufacturing, materials, quality assurance, civil engineering, electrical/electronic, CAD, and skilled trades. Institute of Materials Science & Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis leverages the full potential of interdisciplinary material science research of more than 30 engineers, physicists, chemists, and earth and planetary scientists. Missouri State University Center for Applied Science and Engineering (CASE) at the Jordan Valley Innovation Center in Springfield develops and supports advanced materials research in carbon-based electronics and devices, materials research and characterization, various MEMS sensors, and systems fabrication.

17 17 MT1 Certification, endorsed by the National Association of Manufacturers and included in its National Skills Certification System, is available through Kansas City area schools including the Metropolitan Community College and Missouri Western State University. The Materials Research Center conducts research in fundamental science and applied engineering, including the development, evaluation, application and understanding of metals, polymers, biomaterials, electronic materials, and composites. Centers at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) The Intelligent Systems Center performs basic and applied research to address technology needs and technical issues of intelligent systems in manufacturing and energy. The ISC is affiliated with four national research centers at Missouri S&T, including the Center for Intelligence Maintenance systems, which provides a platform for cooperative research between the university and industrial partners in the area of of M/D/P (monitoring/diagnostic/prognostic) tools with industrial applications.
