Executive summary Carbon Smart 2
Executive summary JTP have seen significant reduction in emissions in 2015, compared to At 176 tco 2 e, JTP s 2015 footprint is at 33% decrease on Coupled with increasing staff numbers overall this is a real achievement for JTP. The Shanghai studio has now been closed, with staff numbers reducing since March 2015, and the studio closed in June One member of staff remains to maintain JTP s presence in China and coordinate activities there. This is explains the fall in Shanghai s footprint compared to 2014, which also contributes to the overall reduction for JTP. Ongoing improvements in carbon management, as well as large reductions in flights and electricity the largest proportion of JTP s footprint overall further explains the cut in emissions against Total JTP emissions Tonnes CO 2 e per employee tco₂e 2012 tco₂e 2013 tco₂e 2014 tco2e 2015 tco2e /10/2014 Carbon Smart 3
Analysis of performance in London Carbon Smart 4
Analysis of performance in London The London studio has cut emissions by 27% on 2014, improving on 2013 s strong performance The London studio has returned to similar levels of emissions as 2013; the peak in emissions in 2014 has not been continued. In fact, a cut of 27% is observed on 2014 and a decrease of 2% on 2013 s data, suggesting that the peak in emissions in 2014 has been addressed and even 2013 s strong performance has been bettered. Company car usage has decreased, down 40% on By promoting cycle to work schemes and London studio carbon footprint (tco 2 e) other sustainable travel initiatives, JTP are able to realise savings on their emissions. 220 Electricity emissions are also down on There 189 has been a net reduction in consumption at London 172 studio, most notable on the Third Floor. A number of tenants vacated the third floor at the end of 2014, also removing their servers from the server room, and this may account for the cut in consumption. Despite an overall cut, there are areas of increase in emissions for London. The greatest increase of these are in taxis and rail Carbon Smart 5
Analysis of performance in London The London studio has reduced emissions from six resource areas Emissions due to company cars, electricity, waste, water, paper, and flights have all reduced in 2015 with comparison to First Mile, JTP s waste management company, report that JTP have one of the highest rates of recycling for companies without food waste recycling. Electricity emissions from electricity have fallen significantly against 2014 levels, bringing emissions in line with The electricity conversion factor was 6% lower in 2015 compared to This is in part due to fewer tenants in the building, but as there has been a net reduction in consumption against 2014 figures, which suggests more efficient use of energy on site. JTP s solar panels have generated around 1 MWh of electricity in London - breakdown of performance (tco 2 e) Flights despite the closure of the Shanghai office at the end of June 2015, flight emissions are down 38% compared to Number of flights has increased, however total distance flown has reduced in 2015, as has average distance per flight. This may be being skewed by a number of short haul flights within Europe JTP had to fly the staff team to Amsterdam due to Eurostar strike action. For a full breakdown of flight data, please see Appendix Rail emissions due to rail travel have increased. Total of 178 rail journeys were undertaken, with a high proportion of London Edinburgh return train journeys. Given that the carbon impact of this journey by rail is only 18% of the same journey by air, this is a strong signal of JTP s commitment to sustainable travel Taxis there has been an increase in emissions due to taxis from the London studio. Natural Gas Company cars Electricity generation Water Paper Rail Taxi Flights Electricity T&D Company cars emissions have halved since 2014 Carbon Smart 6
Analysis of performance in London Electricity consumption at the London studio has reduced by 8% While headcount at JTP has slightly increased, the tenancy numbers have fluctuated through the year, and on average, occupancy at London studio is higher than in Despite this, total electricity consumption in the building has gone down. Notably, consumption on the First and Third floors has gone down. With the server room drawing from the Third Floor meter, this is a significant achievement in energy management. All floors at the studio are included here for completeness; not all areas are occupied by JTP, but do give a measure of building performance year on year. 120, , Electricity consumption (kwh) 80,000 60,000 40, , ANNEXE FIRST SECOND THIRD FOURTH Annual electricity consumption by floor Carbon Smart 7
Analysis of performance in London The London studio continues to maintain a low average emissions per employee when compared to the national average The London studio s employee number risen by 14% since last year to 76 at the end of 2015, and this year the London studio has achieved a carbon footprint per employee of 1.8 tco 2 e. The national average is 4 tonnes of CO 2 e per employee and so staff at the London studio contribute less than half the emissions of the national average. This is due to the increase in staff numbers, coupled with an overall reduction in carbon footprint. JTP may see an increase in this metric with the closure of the Shanghai office and the projected increase in long haul flights in future years. Tonnes CO 2 e per London employee /10/2014 Carbon Smart 8
Recommendations for the London studio Sustainable travel for the London studio The emissions due to taxis attributed to the London office is 3,333 kgco 2 e in This is due to increased taxi use has increased in 2015 compared to Switching to a green taxi company would have cut emissions due to taxis by nearly 30% in 2015 a saving of nearly a tonne of CO 2 e. 961 kgco 2 e could be saved by using green taxis. JTP also encourage cycle to work and other sustainable travel initiatives; switching to green taxis would further improve their performance. 3,333 kgco 2 e in 2015 due to taxis 2,371 kgco 2 e green taxis equivalent Carbon Smart 9
Analysis of performance in Edinburgh Carbon Smart 10
Analysis of performance in Edinburgh The Edinburgh studio s carbon footprint has reduced by 25% since 2014 Edinburgh s carbon footprint has reduced significantly in 2015 with comparison to 2014, with a cut of 25% to 32 tco 2 e. The steep increase from 2012 to 2013 was due to a higher electricity carbon conversion factor, colder winter and the reallocation of flights to the separate studios that year. Edinburgh studio carbon footprint (tco 2 e) /10/2014 Carbon Smart 11
Analysis of performance in Edinburgh Gas, electricity and flights have all reduced at the Edinburgh studio in 2015 The biggest cut is in flights, where total distance travelled is around 46% compared to However the total number of flights has increased, suggesting many more short haul flights, which are more carbon intensive than long haul. Of a total of 105 journeys by air, 39 of these were between London and Edinburgh or Glasgow. Switching to rail for these domestic journeys will further reduce emissions due to travel, which remains the largest portion of the Edinburgh studio s footprint. Edinburgh also reports an increase in emissions due to taxis, and should consider green alternatives in future. While a slight increase in emissions due to waste, paper and non company cars is reported, rail, natural gas and electricity emissions are down on Edinburgh - perfomance breakdown (tco 2 e) Natural Gas Electricity generation Waste Water Non company cars Paper Rail Taxi Flights Electricity T&D Carbon Smart 12
Analysis of performance in Edinburgh Edinburgh reports a steady decrease in emissions per FTE The Edinburgh studio s emissions per employee has reduced in 2015 to 2.5 tco 2 e per employee. This is due to a reduced footprint, with an increasing headcount. Although slightly higher than London s footprint per FTE, this is still well below the national average of 4 tco 2 e. Tonnes CO 2 e per Edinburgh employee /10/2014 Carbon Smart 13
Recommendations for the Edinburgh studio Sustainable travel for the Edinburgh studio While overall impacts due to air travel have reduced, there is a large proportion of air travel between London and Edinburgh or Glasgow, attributed to the Edinburgh studio. Domestic flights (within the UK) are the most carbon intensive so switching these domestic flights to rail journeys will have a significant impact on Edinburgh s carbon footprint. kg CO 2 e / journey Impact Edinburgh London return flight 316 Edinburgh London return train 57 Emissions saved by switching all 2015 domestic flights to rail 92% fewer emissions than the same journey by air ~3,800 kgco 2 e 12% of Edinburgh s 2015 footprint Carbon Smart 14
Analysis of performance in Shanghai Carbon Smart 15
Analysis of performance at Shanghai With the closure of the Shanghai studio, emissions are just 21% of the 2014 footprint The Shanghai studio announced its closure in March 2015, and saw a reduction in staff numbers from then on. The studio was closed at the end of June One member of staff remains, working from a shared office space, and emissions attributed to Shanghai studio for travel within China will continue to be reported. The closure of the studio has impacted JTP s total emissions significantly due to the reduced number of international and national flights from the Shanghai studio. Shanghai studio carbon footprint (tco 2 e) /10/2014 Carbon Smart 16
Analysis of performance at Shanghai Flights and electricity are the most significant emissions from the Shanghai studio With only six months effective activity in Shanghai, the emissions due to buildings has more than halved. Flights have also reduced dramatically, with most flights being within China, rather than long haul to Europe or elsewhere. Data quality has remained a challenge when analysing the Shanghai footprint, however a number of trends are evident. Shanghai - breakdown of performance (tco 2 e) Electricity with only six months occupation at the Shanghai offices, electricity is less than half the emissions of Flights only eight flights were attributed to Shanghai in 2015, and all were within China, hence the impacts are lower. In future, with the closure of the office, we may see an increase here, with staff required to travel to or from Shanghai to other JTP studios Electricity generation Waste Water Paper Rail Taxi Flights Electricity T&D Carbon Smart 17
Analysis of performance at Shanghai Shanghai s footprint per employee is minimal due to the studio closure With reducing activity, headcount, and emissions, the footprint per FTE at Shanghai is very small., as we would expect. Shanghai is the smallest studio in terms of employees and this does make it more vulnerable to fluctuations in performance affecting their emissions per employee figures. Tonnes CO 2 e per Shanghai employee /10/2014 Carbon Smart 18
Analysis of JTP performance Carbon Smart 19
Analysis of JTP overall performance Flights are the single largest contributor to JTP s emissions, followed by electricity Proportion of JTP's total 2015 carbon footprint Electricity T&D 3% Natural Gas 9% Company cars 1% Flights 43% Electricity generation 34% Waste Taxi <1% Rail 3% Paper 3% <1% Water Non company cars 1% <1% 31/10/2014 Carbon Smart 20
Analysis of JTP overall performance JTP s carbon footprint has reduced by 33% in 2015, with notable reductions from the London studio London remains the largest contributor to JTP s carbon footprint, at 78% of the total. Given that influence on the total footprint, the reduction at the London studio has had a big impact on the overall footprint. The decrease on 2013 figures suggest that 2014 was a spike in emissions that London have reversed. Edinburgh has reduced emissions since 2014 by 25%, with the allocation of travel to that studio, giving a more accurate picture of emissions since With the closure of Shanghai, emissions have decreased and JTP can focus on performance of the London and Edinburgh offices. 220 JTP carbon footprint London Edinburgh Shanghai tco₂e 2012 tco₂e 2013 tco₂e 2014 tco2e 2015 tco2e 239 tco 2 e 240 tco 2 e 226 tco 2 e 263 tco 2 e 176 tco 2 e 31/10/2014 Carbon Smart 21
JTP FTE analysis JTP s carbon intensity per employee has reduced between 2014 and 2015 by 40% and remains well below the UK average JTP has been able to continue to improve performance in terms of tonnes of CO 2 e per employee saw the footprint per FTE fall to 1.8 tco 2 e a new low. This is due to net drop in footprint in 2015, as well as growing staff numbers. Reduced activity in China and the 6% reduction in the UK electricity conversion factor have helped JTP reduce emissions per employee by 40% Tonnes CO 2 e per employee /10/2014 Carbon Smart 22
Flight analysis Flight emissions fluctuate across all studios, and are nearly halved in 2015 The total number of flights being taken by JTP staff has gone up in 2015 this is due to flying the team to Amsterdam when Eurostar strikes prevented rail travel 63 more flights than would otherwise have been taken. This also explains the low average distance travelled, which has been suppressed by the number of shorthaul flights within Europe. The London studio has significantly cut flights, with a shift towards rail, which have far fewer emissions per journey. However short haul and domestic flights are the most carbon intensive, and so the emissions per flight for London are the highest of all studios. A breakdown of emissions per flight by office is included in the appendix tco 2 e from flights Number of flights (single leg) Average distance per flight leg (km) 4,094 2,227 1,908 3,685 1,047 31/10/2014 Carbon Smart 23
Flight analysis 93% flights are in economy, the least carbon intensive flight class Efforts to promote lower carbon air travel are paying off, with 93% of all flights in economy in Just 3% of flights were in business class, and another 4% in premium economy. The switch to economy also reflects the fact that fewer long haul flights are being undertaken. With the closure of the Shanghai studio this may increase in future, with more staff required to fly into China to sell and deliver work. Business Class Premium Economy Economy Total London Edinburgh Shanghai Total /10/2014 Carbon Smart 24
The majority of flights are short haul, most of which undertaken by the London studio Flight analysis This year the London studio reports an unusually high proportion of short haul flights this is due to a short notice requirement to fly the team to Amsterdam during a Eurostar strike, and is skewing the figures. Edinburgh also undertake many flights within the UK a breakdown of the impact due to flights between London and Edinburgh is included earlier in this report. Short haul and domestic flights are the most carbon intensive by km travelled, due to the proportion of time spend taking off and landing. Continuing to promote rail travel in the UK and to continental Europe will bring down carbon emissions due to air travel.
