Electromobility in Finland Electric vehicles are becoming more popular in Finland Goal is to have electric cars on the streets 2020

Electromobility in Finland Special characteristics of Finland - general Cold climate Sparsely populated country and long driving distances Arctic Circle Special characteristics of Finland - industry No major automotive industry Significant manufacturers of special vehicles and mobile machinery Strong electrotechnical industry ICT inverters, motors

Electromobility in Finland Finnish electric vehicle business advantages One of the strengths of the Finnish electric vehicle sector is its high level of technological expertise Finland is a perfect platform for e-mobility development because of its top class IT and engineering competence. Our functional infrastructure and harsh weather conditions create optimal conditions for demanding testing environments. Vehicles have access to an existing nationwide network of more than one million engine block heating posts, which can also be used for the slow charging of electric vehicles.

Electromobility in Finland EVE Electric Vehicle Systems Programme Key areas of focus for the EVE programme are various pilot projects and practical trials EVE cooperates with organizations around the world and constantly looks for new partners. Arctic weather conditions make Finland an outstanding test environment for electric vehicles. The programme has five test environments, which have been designed for different vehicle types and components. Four of the five consortia of EVE programme are focused on passenger traffic and related systems. The fifth develops electric vehicle technologies and services in commercial use.

Electromobility in Finland Goals of the EVE programme: To create a community for EV industry and common view for collaboration and coordination of activities To improve national and international value networks with the help on programme services To create large test environments and demonstration projects in Finland To develop and commercialize new technologies and services especially for electric vehicles and mobile machinery

The EUL -project is a development platform for new urban development and electromobility related technologies. The Eco Urban Living initiative aims to research, test and demonstrate the features and functionality of fully electric vehicles as well as the economic feasibility of related components, including various charging solutions. The initiative operates on an open platform allowing for the development and utilization of all types of equipment and services. The EUL initiative promotes the development of new electric vehicle related technologies and services as well as strengthening international networking with leading cities and universities. This networking will support the rapid commercialization of the demonstration results as well as their utilization both nationally and internationally. Thus, the initiative has three dimensions: regional, research-oriented and commercial. The EUL initiative is comprised of several components. ( 9

Electric Commercial Vehicles (ECV): The electrification of vehicles and mobile machinery offers great opportunities for reducing noise and air pollution. In stores, mines, goods transportation and public transport, the switch-over to electric vehicles can reduce local disadvantages significantly. The ECV consortium creates a worldclass R&D network as well as a platform for the development of a wide range of electric commercial vehicles, their power trains and key components. ECV offers a comprehensive approach from components to demonstration platforms to laboratory and fleet tests. Finnish companies have a strong foothold in, for example, the manufacturing of electric mining machinery, forklifts and buses.

World class knowledge on electromobility related to ICT, ITS and smart grids EVELINA is an open nationwide development platform for new eletcromobility solutions from batteries and charging infrastructure to ICT and intelligent transport solutions. EV test platform focus areas ICT Data collection and control, interfaces and analyses Electric vehicles Battery management systems (BMS), ICT appliances and test vehicle fleet Test environment Transportation EV s on the move, utilization of transportation information Energy systems and SG s Smart grid solutions, charging and infrastructure

WintEVE Winter operability for electric vehicles WintEVE consortium aims for winter operability for electric vehicles. It will develop and demonstrate electric vehicles charging systems and end user services for use in demanding weather conditions. In the far north Finland, taking extreme conditions into consideration is crucial for all engineering projects. Dozens of automotive manufacturers are testing their vehicles in the arctic temperatures of the Polar night. Lapland is covered in snow by approximately 6 months the year, with winter temperatures dropping to as low as -30 C or even lower. When a product is designed to withstand the frigid temperatures, it will perform in any operating conditions. DM

Electromobility in Finland Fuel Cell activities Finnish Fuel Cell Programme ( ) - Towards demonstration and public awareness The Finnish Fuel Cell programme facilitates the development of successful fuel cell technologies and services Demo2013 a groundbreaking fuel cell demonstration in a port facility in The long term field tests will take place in Port of Helsinki, Vuosaari Harbour, in the second half of 2013 continuing to 2014 Projects will show a solid approach for handling necessary Regulation, Codes and Standardisation activities Provides evidence of safety, reliability and effectiveness of fuel cells and hydrogen

Electromobility in Finland Fuel Cell activities All kinds of applications in action Demonstrations will feature power and electricity, cargo handling, logistics and communications. The transportation section will feature electric mobile working machines like hybridized terminal trucks or straddle carriers based on PEM fuel cell systems. Low-power applications include back-up power for telecom base stations and light vehicles Additional applications are electric vehicles and bio gas busses Infrastructure will include a hydrogen refueling station Additionally, infrastructure include natural gas, biogas and electricity The target is also to get also a fuel cell car for testing DM

Electromobility in Finland Fuel Cell activities Arctic Driving Center Ltd is a leading provider of test tracks and technical assistance for car and tyre makers It has organized a wide range of test drive conditions in Finnish Lapland for many companies Hydrogen refueling available Arctic Power is the University of Applied Sciences located in Rovaniemi, Lappland Specialized on electric and fuel cell based sled development and cold testing DM
