4 The WORLD SOURCE ONE Difference: Unique Features and Benefits OURS THEIRS - RADIAL THEIRS EXPANDED METAL The grid design is the heart of every battery. The grids are the supporting framework for the active material of the plates. The active material is also known as the paste adhered to the positive and negative grid. Lead dioxide is the paste material used on the positive grid, while sponge lead is the paste material used on the negative grid. The grid design, or what is referred to as the power path, conducts the current to and from the active material or paste on the plates. Our grid design was developed using computer aided technology to provide the most efficient power path available. With radial grids, the left side of the grid has no direct power path, and a poor lug location. It is very inefficient, with limited CCAs produced. A power choke can occur at the top of the plate. Expanded metal grids are also used by many manufacturers today. Again, there is no efficient power path and limited CCAs are produced. The sharp edges could puncture a separator and cause a short circuit. Because there is no frame, the plate can grow. 4

Separators are thin sheets of electrically insulating, porous material that are used as spacers between the positive and negative plates to prevent short circuits within the cells. The important characteristics of a separator is the durability of the material used and the ribs facing the positive plate that provide greater acid volume next to the positives and minimize the area of separator contact. The ribs also provide acid circulation and permit gases formed between the plates to rise to the surface of the electrolyte. The wide ribbed separators on the right used by other manufacturers are produced to save costs but the wider ribs have a negative effect on battery life and performance. Manufacturers use a small amount of a metal alloy additive in the lead plate to strengthen and stiffen the soft lead. This is necessary so the grids can be handled during the manufacturing process without being bent or damaged. WORLD SOURCE ONE batteries contain a more expensive calcium alloy on both the positive and negative grids. This alloy by far provides the truest maintenance-free offering and longest life in the industry. A number of battery manufacturers are marketing either so-called hybrid or low antimony alloy batteries as their maintenance-free offering. This is being done primarily to avoid the higher capital costs associated with a genuine calcium maintenance-free battery line. Calcium maintenance-free batteries simply outperform hybrids and low antimony in every meaningful performance test. Calcium will deliver higher cranking amps, give longer shelf life (1 year plus), eliminate the need to add water and reduce gassing. Thus battery life is prolonged. 6

7 The Calcium Maintenance-Free Advantage As the Stand Loss chart shows, after a twelve month stand, a calcium maintenance free battery actually gains cold cranking power while a Hybrid loses almost 10% of its rated capacity and low antimony loses 12%. This is especially significant for the lower capacity batteries. As the In Service Rate of Water Loss chart shows, Hybrid gasses at a rate that is 600% more than calcium maintenance free. Low antimony gasses, or loses water, at a difference of 1200% Conclusion: Less water loss = Longer service life The last chart compares the percent of reserve capacity retained, while in stock, without recharging. Compare the rate of decline of the Hybrid vs. Calcium maintenance free after 12 months. While calcium maintenance free retains most of its capacity, Hybrid loses more than 65% and low antimony 95% of its reserve capacity. In fact, after 12 months without charging, low antimony and many Hybrids will have to be scrapped, while calcium maintenance free batteries recharge nicely, with no capacity loss. Our calcium maintenance-free batteries have a one year plus shelf life which can be an excellent benefit for any seasonal application such as lawn and garden batteries that have to deal with an extended storage period after the point of sale. 7
