2 Overview Power lines induce voltages on nearby structures such as de-energized transmission lines, buildings, railroads, pipelines, and communication lines. This induced voltage can create electric shocks, arcing, and even fire or explosions. Induction is probably one of the most misunderstood phenomena in power systems. Its assessment is often overlooked, leading to severe consequences. Hazardous working environments can be present if workers are not fully aware of the electromagnetic field effect on induction voltage. With the full knowledge of electromagnetic induction, utilities can acquire acceptable right of way for their power lines, industries and commercial buildings can allocate their business at sufficient distances from the power lines, housing projects can determine the height of their buildings, and utilities can decide on the separation of their pipelines and railroads from power lines. This course will provide the technical information needed to assess the hazards of sharing the right of way with utility lines as well as the worksite hazards for power line work. The course will also deal with mitigation techniques to reduce the hazards of induction voltage. This course requires an engineering background and is intended to provide the knowledge needed to compute the induced voltages due to the electromagnetic fields of energized lines. The computation is simplified without loss in accuracy, so it can be implemented by using handheld calculators. 5 INSTRUCTOR Mohamed A. El-Sharkawi / Fellow / IEEE Mohamed A. El-Sharkawi received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of British Columbia in That same year, he became a faculty member at the University of Washington, where he is presently a professor of electrical engineering. He has also served as associate chair and as chairman of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. During the last 30 years, Mohamed has taught courses on power systems, electric safety, transmission lines, electromagnetic transients, electric drives, and power electronics. He has organized and chaired numerous conferences, panels, and special sessions in IEEE and other professional organizations. He has published over 200 papers and book chapters in his research areas and holds five licensed patents. He has authored three textbooks, Electric Safety: Practices and Standards, Fundamentals of Electric Drives and Electric Energy: An Introduction. He served as an electric safety consultant and expert witness for OSHA, WISHA, and several other organizations. Calculations are useful for strengthening understanding of electrical induced voltages from university days but keeps it practical for use at the office.
