Agenda Who is the ATA? Battery basics: background info Economics of batteries for households How green are batteries & solar? Battery-enabled Sunulator Alternative approaches Conclusion
Who is the ATA? Assist people to make sustainable choices Membership base, branches around Oz Not for profit Policy & Research team International Projects
Who is the ATA - Publications published since 1980 Energy efficiency, renewable energy, electric cars, retrofitting homes, recycling and reusing DIY projects Published since 2005 Sustainable homes case studies including house plans and spec sheets
Agenda Who is the ATA? Battery basics: background info Economics of batteries for households How green are batteries & solar? Battery-enabled Sunulator Alternative approaches Conclusion
Usable capacity Most home batteries are set up so they never fully discharge. This prolongs their lifespan. Rated capacity: 10 kwh Usable capacity: 8 kwh Unused Always charged, never discharged
What s a kilowatt (kw)? A Watt (W) is a unit of power. Light bulbs are rated in Watts. Old incandescent: 60 to 100 W. New LED s: 5 to 20 W. A typical microwave s power is 1,000 Watts, or 1 kilowatt (kw). This is on the appliance sticker. More than one horsepower. A 16-panel solar system may be rated at 4 kw.
What s a kilowatt-hour (kwh)? Unit of energy. Used to calculate your electricity bill. Run microwave for 1 hour: you ve used 1 kwh. Run it for 2 hours: 2 kwh... etc! An efficient, new fridge uses ~ 1 kwh per day. Avg. Vic home uses 13 kwh of energy per day. Wide range, eg 5 to kw solar system generates energy in kwh. Average Melbourne day: ~15 kwh More in good sun!
State of Charge A measure of how fully charged the battery is. Depth of Discharge: 40% State of charge: 60% Charged Charged
Battery Efficiency Energy out compared to energy in. Eg 90% for many lithium batteries. Fully charge the battery: 8.9 kwh required Usable Capacity 8 kwh Fully discharge the battery: 8 kwh comes out
Battery Power What rate can energy be discharged at? Discharge rate 4 kw Usable Capacity 8 kwh Takes 2 hours to fully discharge the battery
Amusing battery 1: Duracell Announced on April 1, 2016 on Voltage: 9V
Agenda Who is the ATA? Battery basics: background info Economics of batteries for households How green are batteries & solar? Battery-enabled Sunulator Alternative approaches Conclusion
ATA s Household Battery Analysis Published 16 th Nov 2015 Picked up by media
Key message not yet economic Looked at grid-connected batteries. Depends on individual situation Might already be economic for a few households. Off-grid is economic if grid connection costs $$$. Of course economics aren t everything! Backup for blackouts Technology enthusiasts Environmental benefits (later in this presentation) Presents results using Net Present Value, NPV Distils future costs & savings into one dollar value. Positive NPV = worthwhile project.
NPV compared to No Solar in 2016 Batteries are economically unattractive in Solar, no battery Solar + small battery Solar + large battery Young family. Flat tariff. 2016
NPV compared to No Solar in 2020 Solar, no battery Solar + small battery Solar + large battery
Variability Every day is different and variable: Consumption patterns. Solar generation. You can t get a full battery cycle every day: Cloudy day, high daytime consumption: Battery won t fully charge. Low consumption evening: Battery won t fully discharge. The next day starts partially-charged. That day can t get a full cycle either!
Battery Utilisation A new term we ve invented. The average daily discharge that s achieved, as a percentage of usable battery capacity. Depends on day-to-day variability. Important factor in battery economics. Anecdotal report from home batteries: Utilisation of 70% over summer. Can predict by simulation, eg Sunulator. Next charts use realistic house consumption data.
One Bad day for the battery Business As Usual: no solar or battery Importing from grid Family on holidays: not much consumption! Sydney. Young family. 2016
One Bad day for the battery Business As Usual vs. solar Importing from grid Exporting to grid
One Bad day for the battery Battery utilisation = 25% Charging Discharging
A Good day for the battery Business As Usual Several spikes of high consumption Sydney. Young family. 2016
A Good day for the battery Business As Usual vs. Solar Export to grid Export to grid Sydney. Young family. 2016
A Good day for the battery Plus battery: utilisation = 143% Charging Charging Sydney. Young family Discharging Discharging
Another Bad day for the battery Business As Usual: no solar. High, steady daytime consumption Sydney. Young family. 2016
Another Bad day for the battery Business As Usual vs. Solar Export to grid Sydney. Young family. 2016
Another Bad day for the battery Battery utilisation = 25% Little excess solar: battery doesn t charge much Charging Discharging Sydney. Young family. 2016
Economics: more results In no case did adding a battery speed payback. The smaller battery was always more economically attractive than the bigger one. Compared to new info, report assumptions were over-optimistic. Current battery prices are higher than assumed. Battery degradation was not allowed for. Prices assumed for 2020 may still be correct. Current pricing may be for early adopters.
Amusing battery 2: DIY Powerwall Posted on youtube by jehugarcia $300 in materials, including 2 nd -hand battteries Reliability: dubious!
Agenda Who is the ATA? Battery basics: background info Economics of batteries for households How green are batteries & solar? Battery-enabled Sunulator Alternative approaches
Excess solar Grid-connected solar system: Excess is fed into the grid. Used by neighbours. Offsets generation by centralised power plants. Off-grid solar system: System designed for cloudy days. Over-produces on sunny days. Excess solar is wasted. Rural off-grid homes: many other green factors! Cable from street is unused
Embodied energy Energy required (in kwh) to produce stuff. Goes back to mining raw materials etc. Solar system no batteries: Monocrystalline Per kw of rated power
Embodied energy Solar Polycrystalline panels use less energy to make.
Embodied energy - Batteries kwh energy required to manufacture, per kwh of rated battery capacity. Inc. transport: 8% & 3% of total respectively. Includes allowance for recycled materials
Embodied energy, 3 solar systems kwh energy required to manufacture. 10 kwh lithium battery 35 kwh lead-acid battery
Energy Payback Time Embodied energy over primary energy saved. Payback within 1-2 years.
Country of origin Most solar gear comes from China. Economy is about as dirty as Australia s. Gear from cleaner countries will be greener. Eg Germany: approx. one-third greener. Can reduce energy payback time by 1/3.
Do batteries help the environment? Avg. suburban household: no direct benefit. Political/activist effect. Long-term: help build the industry. Long-term: supports 100% renewable grid. For reliable support, need centralised control. Direct benefit in specific cases: Avoids embodied energy of grid development: New development with no grid. Grid is stressed, grid-connected battery delays upgrade via peak shaving.
Not-quite-so-amusing battery 3 Before After
Agenda Who is the ATA? Battery basics: background info Economics of batteries for households How green are batteries & solar? Battery-enabled Sunulator Alternative approaches Conclusion
Sunulator Purpose Answer the question Is solar worth it? Empower consumers & their advisors The real world is complex Variable electricity consumption Variable solar generation Tricky electricity tariffs Community solar It s Free!
Sunulator Features Simulate a whole year in half-hourly intervals. Contains 177 locations around Australia. Solar panel tilt and orientation. Batteries Different chemistries etc Model different battery strategies Financial reports Environmental impact tones of C0 2.
Agenda Who is the ATA? Battery basics: background info Economics of batteries for households How green are batteries & solar? Battery-enabled Sunulator Alternative approaches Conclusion
Alternative investments If you re looking to buy a battery, that money might be better invested in other things, eg: LED lights. Window shading. Gap sealing & insulation. Efficient appliances. These actions are: Likely to have faster payback than a battery. Definitely green.
Other Ways to use excess solar Hot water on a timer or smart switch. Water pumping, eg: Irrigation. Pool pump. Pre-cool or pre-heat your home. Only effective in some cases Electric car.
Co-investment by networks Batteries costs and benefits could be shared: Network sells batteries cheaply to households. On critical days, network controls the batteries remotely, discharging them at peak times. Household uses battery for bill savings the other 360 days of the year. Peak demand is shaved, delaying network upgrades.
Agenda Who is the ATA? Battery basics: background info Economics of batteries for households How green are batteries & solar? Battery-enabled Sunulator Alternative approaches Conclusion
Conclusion Solar without batteries delivers good bill savings and is a good green option. Polycrystalline panels are greener than mono. Batteries are still expensive, likely to become attractive for bill savings in 4-5 years. For the average suburban household, current batteries are not particularly green. Battery early adopters should be encouraged because they re helping develop the industry. Look at energy efficiency measures too!
Questions? Andrew Reddaway Energy Analyst
Going off-grid Setting up an off-grid electricity system? Reducing consumption is key. Investments in efficiency pay for themselves in: Panels. Batteries. Diesel fuel. Grid connection severed If the grid is available, going off-grid isn t worth it yet just for bill savings.
