1 Battery Board Manual (v 1.) The Raspberry Pi Battery Board was created as a compact and easy to use portable power source for the Raspberry Pi. Several ways of connecting a battery to the board have been provided. The board is capable of providing up to 1A at 5V and includes a charging circuit that allows the battery to be charged at a maximum rate of 500 ma. Warning: The Raspberry Pi Battery Board was designed as a kit for hobbyists with some experience working with electronics. Soldering is required to assemble the kit. The user should have some knowledge of the dangers involved in working with LiIon/LiPo batteries. Do not use a battery that does not have an integrated over charge / under charge battery protection circuit. Using a bare cell without such a circuit can cause the cell to rupture and or catch fire. What's Included In the Kit: - 1X Raspberry Pi Battery Board PCB - 1X Standard 2X13 header socket - 1X Rubber Foot Standoff - 1X Double Sided Adhesive Card (for holding cell to board)

3 Features Description Battery Input Solder Pads - These solder pads allow for a direct soldered connection to the battery. Note the polarity markings on the silk screen on the bottom of the board. Always observe the correct polarity when connecting a battery. JST Connector Socket - This is socket is used when connecting a battery with a JST plug of correct polarity. The polarity has been chosen to match the Li-Ion batteries available at the Adafruit Store ( Power On/Off Button - This is a push-on \ push-off tactile power switch. Power LED - This red LED will light when the battery board power is on. Charge LED - This amber LED will light while the battery is actively charging. USB Charging Port - Used to charge the battery connected to the battery board. For use with 5V wall wart type charger with a standard 5 pin micro USB plug and an output of 5V at 500mA (or greater). 2x13 Header pads - This set of pads are used to solder a 26 pin header socket for connection to the Raspberry Pi. Switched Output Power Pads - These pads provide access to switched 5V regulated power as well as switched battery power. The two active pins are each paired with a ground pad for convenience. External On/Off Switch Pads - Wire these two pads to an external switch to provide remote On/Off control. A snap-type momentary switch is recommended to avoid problems with switch "bounce".

4 Battery Options There are several options for connecting a Battery to the Battery Board.: JST connection, direct wire to solder pads, and an optional spring contact. The board has been designed to use only a single battery be used at any one time. Please observe proper polarity when making a battery connection to prevent potential damage to the board. JST connector The simplest method of making a battery connection to the battery board is via the JST connector located on the component side of the board (see Features description for location). The JST plug connected to the battery must have the correct polarity. Positive Pin + Negative Pin - The polarity for the board has been selected to match the LiPo cells available from Adafruit Industries. So a simple way of sourcing a battery is to just shop the Adafruit Industries ( site for a appropriate sized battery for your application. In the following pictures I show a 2000 mah LiPo battery being connected to the board.

7 Hardwire to solder pads For a semi-permanent connection to a battery a pair of solder pads have been provided. Note the silkscreen on the top side of the board when determining the correct polarity. Fitting adhesive card to board

8 Completed assembly Notice in this example the battery covers the cut out for the composite video port. With a standard 8mm tall header socket the adhesive backed card gives just enough additional height for the battery to clear the video port body. The adhesive card should not cover the cut out.

9 LiIon Removeable Battery Contact (optional) On the front side of the Battery Board are a set of solder pads for use with an optional spring battery contact. The spring battery contact option was designed specifically for use with a battery compatible with the Samsung Galaxy SIII i9300. The spring contacts allow a battery to be replaced without having to solder or access the component side of the board. The battery can easily be held in place with a piece of double sided adhesive, or if you have a 3D printer, it should be possible to build a bracket to hold the battery in place. Solder two battery side pads first

10 Check that contact body is flush with board before soldering strain relief on component side of board. Solder two strain relief tabs on component side of board.

12 Header Options Standard header This type of header is included in the battery board kit. Connections to the Raspberry Pi IO can be made by directly soldering to the pads on the top side of the battery board. Note that my supply for headers are from chopped down larger sized header blocks. So if you see one end is a bit rough it isn't a manufacturing defect. Stackable Header This header is provided separately as an option for users that want to be able stack other Raspberry Pi compatible boards on top of the battery board. The Stackable header have pins that can be cut to the desired length and also include spacers that can be removed (though it takes a bit of work) to adjust the board height.
