The prez sez Junior / Junior = under 18 Junior = 18 to 60 Senior = 60 to 80 Senior / Senior = 80+ Club perceived age / knowledge In spite if the somewhat inclement weather, model flying still goes on at CMAC throughout the winter, daylight saving is soon to be with us so hopefully we can enjoy more flying as the days lengthen. We have had some new prospective members flying at the RC field in recent weeks as the new CAA rules come into play, the new rules make it somewhat difficult to fly at local parks with new rules and regulations and approval required, we certainly welcome any new members to CMAC who wish to join us The committee has been in talks with the FPV drone racing group, we hope to be able to give them a home at CMAC but this is still in the discussion stage. their activities will not interfere with any current flying groups or flying areas. Congratulations to young George Turner who has now gained his wings badge and has accounted for himself very well with applause upon landing his foamy in very stiff winds at the Lake Forsyth meet. Happy Flying Grahame Hart Paul Chisholm s KA6 progress. The fuselage is.6mm ply, a great job. 2

Minutes of CMAC committee meeting, Thursday September 17 th 2015, Present: Grahame Hart, Trevor Henderson, Gary Burrows, Ian Harvey, Mark Venter, Lyn Rodway Apologies: Graeme Moffatt, Dave Jackson Minutes of last meeting: approved with the modification of some miss-spelt words and names. Business arising from last meeting: nil Correspondence out and in: In wings badge for junior member George Turner from MFNZ. Out: letter to Alex Hewson re-gold medals at the F3K world championships. Treasurer s report: Books are in good shape, with no immediate outstanding bills. Savings a/ c at around $4.5K and cheque a/c around $3.5K. Site hire has been settled for the year and auditor and insurance paid. Only small operational expenditures anticipated. Maintenance is well down on other years, mainly because of a reliable mower and other good equipment. There is a modest income from the club nights. Because of the slowness of some subscription payments, it was suggested that a $20.00 increase should be wacked on those paying after June 20 th each financial year. This date set so that there is time to get all the affiliations to MFNZ before the end of June. Section officers reports: Soaring: Pretty quiet because of the weather, but some turned out for a 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 competition a few weeks ago. Dave Griffin gave an impressive display of aero-tow gliding at the Lake Forsyth fly in with a particularly nifty low level thermal catch that terminated in a 1hr plus flight in windy, cold conditions. Free Flight: Not much to report except that the weather has not been kind to over the last few weeks. F1A (A2 Glider) was abandoned on the first Sunday of the month and Stew Morse and Lynn flew open power last weekend - although only Lynn flew all 3 flights - one going outside the bounds of the field within 3 minutes. Vintage: Quiet here but half A Texaco due a couple of weeks ago but not flown to date. Replica free flight coming up. Tomboy and other miscellaneous competitions: Gary B reports Tomboy going well with new models promised. Despite changing rules, top guys always seem to come out on top. He is contemplating a new challenging limited R/C scale class that he is working up to foist on the club members. Pylon: Keen to go but weather against flying. Hope to get a good weekend s flying in next weekend. Seems models are ready but people not always available. R/C Power: Again weather a problem. With Graeme M. away, Grahame H. will run the end of month BBQ. AOB: Scott Spooner (SI Rep and quad copter/rotorcross Liaison) was contacted and attended the September club night with a report on SI activities as well as a report and quad copter demo of the RotorCross activities. Scott came out to the field on a Sunday and was shown the fields and those over the back of the stop bank. Scott expressed interest since the RotorCross community do not have a permanent site to do their racing. Scott arranged a committee meeting with the RotorCross group last week to discuss and was to attend our committee meeting tonight but has put in an apology due to university work. Hopefully he will send an update from their meeting in due course. Mark V. to follow up and liaise with the group. Mark V. has some interesting events coming up with the Tuesday club nights. next month. 3

Helicopter competition and a model engineering presentation are to be looked forward to (bad sentence). (Yeah right OBGGGG) Meeting closed at 8:20pm with next meeting to be tentatively on a convenient Thursday Free Flight Report for Sunday 13 Sept. by Reliable Rodway Well the forecasters got it right with respect to the SW wind which was not too bad at 8:30 am but gradually picked up intensity and by 10:30 flying was abandoned. A reasonable turnout of bods, Lynn, Stew M, Granddad E, Bruce W, Dave and Rachael. Granddad E had a flight with his 48" Tomboy to make sure all was going to be OK in the wind for the next comp. towards the end of the month. Stew, Bruce and Lynn flew open power, flying from the power pylons. Lynn was the only one to get three flights in, Stew managing two and Bruce flagging any attempt due to the wind carrying one's model close to the trees by the stop bank in two minutes. Lynn's last flight landed in the Pylon Racing paddock and was found by Dave. Dave tossed his tip launched glider on a few occasions but sadly we had to call it a day about 11:00 and left the site. Results: Open Power Lynn = 356 Stew = 141 Cheers Lynn PS I remembered to hook up the engine cut off this time!!!! 4

Tomboy nirvana Sunday 23 august What pearler of a day, no wind, lots of models and modelers, blue sky the only down side was the competition of the day which did rely on more testing conditions to sort the fliers from the dross. The top 4 placings had a spread of 8 points with only one older chap making the maximum score of 900, but the main thing everyone had a great day, the best this winter. Missing from the gaggle were two top fliers John Dunstan (electric super performer) using the weak excuse of having to go to the Mediterranean for 30days of back packing and so will miss the next TB in September (this will let Stu Grant and his electric to overtake him). The Other top flier (OBGGG) is using his Gout??? to keep him out of being shown up to his non performing status in TB this year (apparently it is not gout according to the MRI scan but damage which is in the need of surgery!!!). To the contest he may look old and in need of support but there was nothing wrong with his tactics and ability to achieve the maximum of 900, Granddad Ensoll worked the rules out to perfection by making sure that he had all the bonus landing points to achieve his maximums. Well done John. Second placing went to Mark Venter (36 D) and while he also made all his landing bonuses his second flight was 2 seconds shy including the landing bonus. Third placing went to the quiet achiever Lynn Rodway (48 D) Lynn only achieved 1 landing bonus but if he had got the others he also would have made the maximum of 900 (more landing practice Lynn!!!) Stu Grant (48 E) also was in there with a chance but blew his first flight by missing the landing, Don t be fooled by the relaxed another 900 gone begging!!! Granddad E timing Stu Grant, the Of the others, missing landings or not achieving 900 was in the bag at this stage!!! enough time to allow for the landing bonus to count, was the main cause of not being there or there about. From the rules point of view a tightening up on the landing circle diameter from 30meters to 20 meters will be considered for the next time we have this contest OBGGG 5

Must be a good day, just look at the car numbers and that is only just on the FF/TB patch, more on the radio patch. Sean McCurrie s new 1935 Long Cabin on its first vintage outing, still in need of performance adjustments Stu Grant and his newly acquired Pacer X Ensoll now converted to electric, really showed off its performance pedigree on its first outing 7

Stew Morse and his new 020 vintage Thermal Thumber model Young George Turner s Mozzie which suffered a broken propeller (in the air I understand) Still in one piece due George s undoubted flying skills as the Mozzie wasn t noted for its one engine performance in full size. 8

How to make a model engine perform better? by BigT You may not believe it, but those are the words asked of me by an out of town aeromodeller about 3 weeks ago. The answer is very simple...first off you must learn to operate the engine properly which involves understanding all of the following eg fuel, glowplug, propeller, compression, and most importantly correct tuning. Correct tuning is not difficult but patience is required and it does help to have a good ear to listen to the engine note. Without good engine knowledge then nothing will operate properly and the aeromodeller will become frustrated. A two stroke engine has very few moving parts but they must all be in perfect condition to operate at their best...aside from the carburettor there is the crankshaft, a connecting rod, known as a conrod, and then the piston/ liner combination which I shall refer to as a single unit. The crankshaft is generally supported on two ball bearings which must allow the shaft to rotate smoothly- there are correct specifications for these bearings and in a high performance engine then phenolic cage C3 bearings should be used. These are not normally available from the local bearing agent but its worth waiting the extra time for him to obtain such an item...sometimes you are best to obtain these yourself and a good source of bearings of this quality is BOCA from the USA. The installation of the bearings into the crankcase is not too difficult and perhaps call for a separate article. The conrod- generally made of high quality aluminium and in itself is a very important item- they generally have a right and wrong side and if assembled wrong can do severe damage as they won't run true on the crankpin. Generally the big- end has a large clearance fit to the crankpin, and the little end will be quite tight fitting to the gudgeon pin which may be a taper fit into the piston, or perhaps be held in place with nylon/ teflon pads. The more high performance engines tend to have circlips in the piston to retain the gudgeon and if you ever contemplate taking the circlips out then the job is best done inside a plastic bag. Circlips are know to spring out of place and the use of the bag will mean that at least you won't loose them. The piston/ liner assembly is what will give the power and if in a good condition will be more than adequate for the average aeromodeller. It will last a very long time- unless of course the engine digests dirt, or perhaps the needle has been set very lean. Never forget than a lean engine generates heat which can ruin an engine in a very short time. The piston /liner combination will eventually wear and the 'fit' will be lost- generally this is a gradual process and you will notice a power loss and in some cases the engine will be very difficult to tune, or be temperamental. A worn-out engine though generally will be difficult to start because of a loss of compression, and the average aeromodeller will end up putting more nitro in the fuel or run a hotter plug to compensate...never forget though that this will only be a temporary measure. How long should an engine last? An engine run in a clean environment, and with careful tuning should perform very well for a very long time - perhaps 2 or 3 years- and in my experience the first thing to fail will be the crankshaft bearings. 9

Blue skies, sunshine, little wind, and even the occasional big fluffy thermal if you knew to hunt. Some sunburn was experienced, another nearly-forgotten phenomena. John Shaw travelled up from Timaru to join us. Stu Grant averted near disaster when his glider lost a wingtip, but demonstrated masterful control and brought it under control and down for a landing that was much less eventful than it could have been. A newcomer, whose name will be omitted, entertained us with Radian aerobatics including a vertical dive, backwards cartwheel by the pilot, pulling out a meter from the ground. There was no reminder prior to the event, due to a technical snafu. Normally soaring events are posted onto the chchsoar group. However we are attempting to ensure that the soaring events advertised in the Torque calendar are correct. 12 September Club Night. Our guest speaker was the new N-SI MFNZ rep Scott Spooner. Scott gave a run down on the new "drone" regulations which recently came into force and how they affect our hobby and park flying within the Christchurch area. It is strongly suggested that if you do ANY park (or multi rotor) type flying that you review the new regulations since park flying in general is affected. Scott then gave us a display on the use of FPV as used in the new RotorCross events (Quadcopter racing) and set it up and passed the two displays (head gear and separate screen) as well as the quadcopter around and everyone had a good look at how it all fitted out and what the pilot sees via the headgear and onboard camera. Many thanks to Scott for taking time out from his busy schedule at such short notice to attend as guest speaker. October Club Night. Our next meeting will be the 6th October 7 for 7:30pm If you have been slack and or stuffed your mini helicopter away somewhere out of sight then you had better dig it out, charge it up and START PRACTICING. You only have a few weeks left to get on top of your game! Yes, October meeting is our Helli challenge and once again our treasurer was amenable to me getting a few prizes to hand out. The course is set out below and the scoring is in total seconds for the flight from start to finish. Please make sure you have a good set of batteries in your TX and if you have a charger bring it along. Make sure you charge your helli after every two flights 1. Take off from the helli-pad, figure 8 round the posts and then a loop over the top cross post to return back to the helli-pad. 3. Score = flight time in seconds. 1 point = 1 second. 4. There is no penalty for hitting any obstacles but the course MUST be completed as per the diagram to gain a score. 5. Max score = 90 (i.e the flight will end after 90 seconds irrespective of where you are in the course) 5. Landing within a 1m circle will count as a completed flight. 6. Attempting to fly but not completing the course = 90 points. 7. Landing on the heli-pad: * Within 20 seconds = -5 points * Between 20 & 60 seconds = -10 points * Between 60 & 90 seconds = - 15 points 8. Final score = best 2 out of three flights. 12

Poopy puppy pooper scooper reports Sean McCurrie was extolling his latest German kit ( a built up electric glider) on its ability to make him look good in the building department. To quote Sean the kitset was received in a plastic bag with the instructions to shake vigorously and low and behold out pops this immaculate glider Sean I have some shares in a company which offers a return trip to Pluto you might like. Contrary to other published comment about the editors having or not having GOUT it is confirmed that he does have said condition and the pills are having effect, pity about the other underlying tendon damage which caused it, the earliest he can see a surgeon is 30th October. His new signature is now OBGGGG. OBGGGG has shown me the rules for the next club night helicopter event and thanks his lucky stars that he has a excuse not to participate, GOUT has its advantages some times!!!! Our illustrious secretary comments that OBGGGG s new proposed scale contest is challenging I DON T THINK SO!!!! Compared to these rules the scale event will be a doddle. Indoor Report for the 13 th September the event we flew was F.1.D. Flying for us this winter has been good due to a church using the hall before us thus it is nice and warm due to the heaters running for a couple of hours before we get there. All four of us were flying and as we always do were using our F.1.Ls. Nev was first away looking really good his time was Five minutes ten seconds this turned out to be his second best time. His next time was five minutes thirty seven seconds. It was very good flying and a nice trim. Just after this Dave turned in a six minute twenty two second time and later burying the field with another two times over a minute longer! I started flying using 52 thou rubber this proved too small leaving far too many turns. This was the only point four gram motors I had so I started making more motors from other point six gram motors but still was falling short of Dave s times. Kay did a couple of times and once again was coming up short of Dave s times. It was very good flying on Dave s part and suspect that the next F.1.D. contest will be a really good contest. Results. F.1.D. DAVE. 7 min. 24 sec. & 7 min. 26 sec. Bill. 6 min 45 sec & 7 min. 29 sec Kay. 6 min 44 sec. & 6 min 46 sec. Nev. 5 min 37 sec. & 5 min 10 sec. Hand Launched Glider. 14 Weather Station Phone Number Operating times Monday to Friday hrs and hrs Saturday and Sunday hrs Editorial Manure. # 131, many more to come Recently I paid a visit to a long time modeler who was commenting on all those things that he brought new for future projects and now is finding out that, A/ they are now have been superseded by a much better item, B/ his enthusiasm for the project has diminished because his interests have moved on. How many of us have these stores of brand new items that we will never use and that probably nobody wants. My new policy is only buy them when the current project is held up YEAH RIGHT!!! At the last committee meeting it was floated the idea to raise next years subscription by $20 WHICH WOULD BE WAIVIED if the subscription was paid by due date. Reasoning behind this is to cut down on the paperwork in handling late subs which does become a pain for the club secretary/treasurer/nzmaa secretary and me as editor on who to send out Torque to. What do you think??? CMAC CLUB SCALE TEXACO competition. What!! we don t have one do we?? No we don t, but I am in the process of formulating rules to encourage scale type competition. You might very well point out that Vintage rules of the NZMAA cover this, and to some degree you are right, but those rules are currently being reviewed and modified to fit correctly into the vintage philosophy, which is for published scale model plans covering the years before Now Texaco scale was originally introduced into NZ using the rules of the SAM group which allowed for models of any full sized aircraft to be flown, no published plans needed. My rules will allow that to stay the same along side models with published plans but it will be all one class not the several classes depending on motor. Texaco is a fuel economy class and I will limit the fuel to 5cc, use any motor you like, wing loading 8oz/sf for mono planes 6oz/sf for biplanes, Model shall be of a full sized aircraft flown before The contest will be for 3 flights of maximum duration, best two to count, THE WIN- NING MODEL MAY NOT BE USED FOR THE NEXT YEAR but allowed the year after, to encourage at least 2 models to be built (must be different of course). As the rules are in the formulation stage does anyone have any ideas which will help make the interest in scale to the same level of participation as Tomboy. OBGGGG Seen on church bulletin board. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say "Hell" to someone who doesn't care much about you. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare' s Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. 14
