1 Modern businesses are under pressure to maximise the (sales) revenue per square metre of floor space. The CEN-Power 'Compact' series of static inverters has been designed to significantly reduce the amount of floor area required without increasing the height. By careful design and selection, all components, including the batteries, can be accessed from the front. This means there is no need to leave space to the rear or sides of the cabinets for ventilation and maintenance, freeing up more floor area for other, more profitable purposes. A maximum cubicle depth of 620mm enables the equipment to comfortably fit through a standard doorway. The cubicle plinth allows for good manoeuvrability via forklift or pallet truck during installation. Systems comply with the latest British and European Standards. CEN-Power Compact series inverters are particularly useful when aesthetic or installation considerations preclude the use of conversions, slave luminaires, bulkheads, etc. This is because they are able to supply suitable standard mains luminaires without modification. They are also invaluable where high emergency lighting illuminance levels are required, such as standby lighting or high risk task areas. On medium to large installations, static inverters are a very cost-effective solution, particularly when taking into account their 10-year battery design life, which compares very favourably to the 3 to 4-year design life of self-contained nickel cadmium batteries. s

2 System Operation 2 Mains Available: The normal 230V mains supplies the battery charger (power factor corrected) which converts the AC into DC and charges the battery. The mains also supplies power to the load via the Changeover Contactor. This is the reserve or bypass path and is used with maintained systems. On systems with three phase input, the maintained circuit is supplied by only one of the three input phases (usually L3). The inverter is normally off when mains is available (passive standby). The maintained power can be remotely controlled via an external switched input. Mains Fail: The Inverter starts instantaneously and converts the DC from the battery to AC for the load. Once the inverter is on, the Changeover Contactor is switched automatically to enable the inverter to power the load. The inverter will supply 230V, 50Hz AC to the load until the mains is restored or until the end of rated duration in the case of extended mains failure. Should the battery become fully discharged the inverter will turn off automatically to protect the batteries from being overdischarged. System Features Battery Charger Power Factor Corrected, microprocessor controlled battery charger. This means that during battery recharge the current drawn from the mains is in phase with the voltage (0.99PF during recharge). In commercial terms it means lower electric bills to achieve the same result as a non-power factor corrected charger. It also means less distortion of your mains supply and low AC ripple into the battery which improves battery life. Single and three phase input available 80% capacity within 12 hours and full recharge within 24 hours, in compliance with BS EN 50171:2001. Temperature compensation battery charge voltage adjusted (+-3mV/degree C/cell) in accordance with battery manufacturers specification in order to optimise battery life. Constant voltage, current limited (C/10). Battery disconnect sensing the microprocessor tests the connection between battery and charger/inverter by monitoring the battery charge current. This proves that the battery fuse and cable are intact. Protection against battery over-voltage, input mains low and mains surges e.g. Surges caused by lightning. 3 3 Manual Battery Test A ten minute test and a deep (full duration) test are accessible via the display, the system will simulate a mains failure and discharge the battery for the predetermined time, and once the test is complete the system will reset and display an alarm if the battery is faulty. Low Voltage Battery Disconnect Disconnects the load from the battery in the event of an extended mains failure to help protect it from the damaging affects of deep discharge Resets automatically when the mains is restored Automatic Battery Test A weekly or monthly ten minute battery test can be selected. During setup, a convenient time and day for the test can be set. The battery capacity is tested, and once the test is complete the system will reset and display an alarm if the battery is faulty. 6 MAINS INPUT Remote Mounted Options 6 RAU: Remote alarm unit, which can be connected up to 100 meters away by 4-core cable for remote monitoring of system. Consists of LED display with audible alarm and silence button. SIM240: In installations where the normal mains luminaire is to be energised from the static inverter under mains fail/emergency conditions then it is necessary to introduce a changeover relay/contactor for the two incoming supplies (mains and static inverter supply). Mains luminaires can be converted integrally or, if insufficient room internally, a remote version is available. Alternatively, a power relay/contactor can be installed to switch several luminaires together. 7 7 Sub Circuit Monitor - Monitors mains lighting circuits and provides a signal to the static inverter unit in the event of a mains lighting circuit failure. Normally for non-maintained systems or on the non-maintained circuit of dual output systems, but can also be used for maintained systems that operate in the nonmaintained mode by controlling the maintained circuit. Non load switching. Units are available to monitor single, 4, 8 or 12 sub circuits. A keyswitch can be fitted if required to enable simple testing by an authorised user. Hold Off Relay Monitors Monitors mains lighting circuits and are used to hold off the maintained output from the static inverter unit, providing non-maintained luminaire operation. In the event of a mains lighting circuit failure the contactor drops out, allowing the maintained supply to energise the emergency luminaires. Units are available to monitor single, 4, 8 or 12 sub circuits. A keyswitch can be fitted if required to enable simple testing by an authorised user. These are load switching devices. 8 8 Systems have been designed and sized to make maximum use of the batteries. Single or three phase input must be specified when ordering. NB: On systems with three phase input, the maintained circuit is supplied by only one of the three input phases (usually L3/Blue Phase), however, the charger is true three-phase. System & Installation Considerations Room Ventilation Negligible amounts of hydrogen are generated under normal operating conditions, however, adequate ventilation should be provided to prevent potentially explosive levels of gases from building up. The system will generate a small amount of heat during (passive) standby operation, but during battery discharge and recharge a greater amount of heat will be generated. It is therefore necessary to provide adequate ventilation in order to keep the room cool and to ensure that the battery temperature does not rise significantly. Optimum battery operating life and performance is achieved at an ambient temperature of 20C ±5C, i.e. a temperature range of 15 to 25C. Ventilation should be designed to draw fresh, cool air in at low level and exhaust at high level. Warning Notices These should be displayed on entry doors to static inverter/battery rooms, e.g. BATTERY ROOM. EXTINGUISH ALL NAKED LIGHTS BEFORE ENTERING. NO SMOKING. Environment The room must be kept dry and free from dirt and dust at all times. Rating of System When calculating the VA and Watts rating of the static inverter it is important to ensure that the actual power consumption of each luminaire is used and not the lamp rating, i.e. the efficiency of the luminaire is taken into account. When a total load figure is achieved then spare capacity should be added in order to cater for future expansion and/or on-site amendments to the lighting design. In order to maximise the quantity of luminaires that can be connected to the static inverter their power factor should be 0.85 or higher. Modern fluorescent luminaires utilising high frequency control gear are ideally suited as they generally have power factors approaching unity. Types of Lighting Static inverter systems operating in passive standby mode are suitable for most forms of fluorescent and incandescent lighting. However, they are not suitable for discharge lighting (SON, metal halide, etc) due to the fact that when the mains supply is interrupted for only a very short period of time (typically this can be as short as 5 or 10 milliseconds) they usually have to cool down before they are able to re-strike. The changeover time of a passive standby inverter is generally too long to support this form of lighting. Also, discharge lamps normally have a warm-up period before achieving full brightness. For these reasons discharge lighting is not recommended for use as emergency lighting, however, they can be used as long as they are supplementary to a normal emergency lighting installation. We are able to supply ON-LINE or NO-BREAK static inverter systems to support combined fluorescent, incandescent and discharge lighting schemes. Glow Starters Important Note: BSEN prohibits the use of glow starters in fluorescent luminaires used for emergency lighting. Multiple Use of Systems Important Note: Systems specified for emergency lighting use should not have other services connected to them.
