2 The prez sez Junior / Junior = under 18 Junior = 18 to 60 Senior = 60 to 80 Senior / Senior = 80+ Club perceived age / knowledge You may or may not know that we have members in our club who put a lot of time into the running of the club and also are very generous with providing product to assist our members I would like to thank Trevor Henderson (Big Trev) who has donated a brand new Skyraider Mk 2 model to the club along with Servos. Trevor and Liz have also donated a new first aid kit as the old one was stolen in the recent attack on the container. The container has now had a stronger lock box fitted and we now have very strong padlocks which will hopefully stop these vandals from interfering with the clubs assets. The Committee recently nominated suitable members to Model Flying NZ for examiner and instructor roles in the various disciplines, congratulations to those members. Happy Flying Grahame Hart Our English gentleman and his easy R/C flier, suits my style of flying says Roy Gunner 2

3 Down at the Power Patch We have had some pretty marginal weather over the last month. The grass is starting to grow again and strip has had its first mow. We have upgraded the security around the container which we trust will deter the people who seem to think it's acceptable to thieve others people's property. Club members have worked hard to get the resources that we have. Disappointing that this effort is not respected by others. Good to see more models using the strip and visitors are coming out regularly to see what we are doing. Please remember that if you have friends that may be interested in the sport the club has a trainers that visitors can fly to get some experience. It's not necessary that they have their own model or transmitter. Last weekend we had a battery catch fire in a model. It was lucky that it self extinguished but please remember that we have placed sand in the pits are that can be used to smother a fire if necessary. Remember that we have the BBQ on the last Sunday of the month. If the weather is not suitable we postpone until the next Sunday, if its still not suitable its cancelled until the next month.. See you at the Strip By Graham Moffat Alistair our welder who did a very good job on the door 3

Not one of our best meetings mostly due to Kay and I rushing to fly our full blown F.1.D.s. Church was late leaving the hall again, and we hogged the floor not giving Nev a fair go, and as you would expect, no reward was forth- coming. I guess I feel expecting that every time we fly things will get better and it mostly does, just not this time. Towards the end of our time the large models were put away and with the little time left Kay rushed to get a couple of times in and I had to fly with motors that have lost heaps of turns due to problems with the spacer that we have to use to make the small motor fit the prop hook and rear hook. Results. Kay. 6 min 21 sec. - 4 min 32 sec. Nev. 5 min 18 sec,- 5 min 10 sec. Bill 4 min.- 4 min 28 sec. Next meeting will be on the 10 th October and we will be flying Hanger Rat. Will Rodgers quotes People who fly into a rage always make a bad landing. The only way you can beat the lawyers is to die with nothing There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. 7 TOMBOY 27TH AUGUST What can I say, another perfect day (Zeus seems to look after us) very light winds up to the height that we can operate at (above that apparently there was a strong NW r, a r/c power person said so!!!!) The contest was a quiet affair with Mr. Dunstan getting calluses on areas that don t show due bike riding in Europe ( his hope was that the weather would CR_P and we would have refly it when he got back!!!!!) His twin Ashley was not there also (must be missing the companionship of his mate!!!!) Granddad E was also missing in action. So that left 2 36 TB and 3 48 TB (one of which was Electric) to share the spoils. This contest was a turn round of fortunes compared with the last contest in which OBGGGG creamed it. It was those who flew their last flights late made the gains that put them on top of the skim milk. The 36 division was up for grabs right up to the last flight which saw a reversal of placing with John Beresford s last flight of 10+ minutes toping out OBGGGGG and also placing him as second overall, well done John. 48 division saw a tussle for top dog between Lynn Rodway (1.3 Mills) and Stu Grant (electric) and it was the last flights by them which sorted it out, with poor Lynn having his engine stop prematurely and Stu having the best flight of the day. Such is the luck of the draw!!! Stew Morse gave up after 2 flights when his Mills 1.3 just didn t show the promise it predicted (that s the life of a diesel modeler!!!) 10 Here is a copy of the latest Proposed rules for Vintage sport power models which were never intended for competition just fun flying in the 30 to 40 span range. There is a list of suitable models which meet this category and as we fly a lot of Vic Smeed models there are 9 listed in that range even the Tomboy (remember that there are 2 versions on the plan 36 and 40 ) The important parts of the rules are highlighted. The Proposed New Rules: 5.10 RC Sport Cabin Texaco, IC and E Purpose: To enjoy RC flying (IC or Electric) with sport cabin Power Model designs from the Vintage and Classical periods through managing a specified energy supply to maximise flight time An eligible design is a sport Power Model (see Rule 2.1.1) from the combined Vintage and Classical periods (see Rule 2.1.2), that was not intended for competition flying and has: a. A wingspan (unscaled) in the range inches. b. A cabin or cockpit with either glazing, or a canopy, or a windscreen. c. A fixed undercarriage that is either two-wheel or tricycle. If the plan of an eligible design omits the wing section, the Clark Y section (as used by Tomboy) is substituted There are two separate classes: 1. RC Sport Cabin IC Texaco a. Models have IC motors up to 1cc (0.61 cu. in.) nominal capacity. b. Maximum fuel tank size is 3cc. c. The fuel tank is either integral of the correct capacity or a separate commercially-available unit, or a home-made tank that is approved by the Vintage SIG Committee. 2. RC Sport Cabin E Texaco a. Models have any electric motor with direct drive. b. The motor battery is a 2 cell LiPo with maximum capacity 180 mah. c. The motor may be stopped and started and its speed may be adjusted in flight Rules apply to both classes Radio Control General Rules (see Section 2) apply, except for Rules and Scaling is not allowed and there is no minimum wing loading Age bonus does not apply Landing bonus does not apply Three timed flights are allowed. The score is the combined total of the two best flights, each scored as one point per second If scores are tied, placings are determined by the score of the third-ranked flight of the three allowed. 10

11 Vic Smeed Precision September 17 by Bruce Weatherall Murphy s Law was in evidence for the September round of the Vic Smeed Precision competition. Lynn Rodway, John Beresford, Stew Morse and Bruce Weatherall turned up to take part, but a stiff northeasterly blew up early and it was decided to give it away. Stew left, but shortly after he departed the wind dropped away and we decided to fly after all. John s first flight with his Tomboy scored just a second short of the 90 second target, but his second flight caught a massive thermal and flew high and far before coming down at 140 seconds for a 40 point net score. However, John was honest enough to admit that he had activated his recently-acquired Radio DT earlier (see below for info) than the rules allowed to prevent the plane disappearing behind the trees on the southern end of the site, with the result of a zero score. His third flight was a respectable 70 seconds. Lynn scored the same with the first flight of his Ballerina, but then engine troubles set in, resulting in one no flight and two of 56 seconds. Bruce also had engine issues with the Pee Wee in his Mini Madcap, so he recorded just one time of 60 seconds. Results: Lynn Rodway 70, 56, 56 John Beresford 89, 0, 70 Bruce Weatherall 60 Miniature servo DT Transmitter the web address is leobodnar.com It comes up at the top of the page, Leo Bodnar Simulator electronics and click on model aircraft accessories. 12 Scale Aero Towing and Slope Soaring in England Over the last two months Julie and I have been holidaying visiting our daughter Andrea and family in the Wiral in England. Prior to going I got on the British Model Flying web site and found the scale soaring program for the UK and the various club contact s ( this is particularly well done on their web site something we here in NZ should replicate). All those contacted were very co-operative providing directions etc the various locations. The first soaring event that fitted in with our UK timing was the Sandyhayes Aerotow just outside Lincoln on the opposite side of the country to where we were staying. After a trip to the local European Car rental facility we were mobile, the trip from the Wiral to Sandyhayes took most of the day a large part avoiding Manchester and all its population and traffic issues. We found the field easy, they operate from a beautiful club owned paddock mown to Hagley park standard. They allow camping on site and have their own toilet and hangar storage facilities. After a quick meet and greet took their advise and went into near by Market Rasen village to find accommodation which was easy and not expensive, returning to the field to watch a bit of late evening flying and a look around at some of the lovely home built and commercial scale sail planes. The following day turned up at the field around ten only to be told they would not be flying today as it was too windy( about 12 MPH). Disappointed we headed in to Lincoln for the day to look at this very old town. The following days weather turned out much the same and it began to rain so decided to head back across country to the next planned weekend event a Slope scale soaring event at Church Stretton on the Welsh boarder, again this took most of the day but did get to the site after a few Navigation failures on my part to take in the end of the first days flying. This is one very impressive site with good access (be it and narrow very steep sealed road up the side of a mountain). Again had very good accommodation on the recommendation of the club Secretary who also invited us to the club dine in with them all at a local pub which turned out to be a great night talking model flying and meeting flyers and wives. The next day it was up the goat track to the flying site early. There were a large range of great models mostly home made ranging from 4-7 mtr wing spans and all with a high degree of scale detail. Launching is not an issue with plenty of wind but landing is a little different to what I am used to as they come in very low and slow across the top of the heather covered hill side and stall into it, that way the wings are not over stressed by the speed of the landing approach. The day was going great until about when the clouds came down and enveloped the hill top shutting down the flying for the rest of the day, ( I was beginning to wonder if I was the Jonah causing the two event weather failures) I met a lot great guys one of which, Brian Sharp from Scotland, who knew Allan Knox and several other NZ modelers ( small world) Pics of this event over page. The last event I went to was another two day slope event at Leek Moreland in the peak district in the middle of the country. This event I attended last year when in England and it was great to catch up with friends from the previous visit and some of the ones I had met at Church Stretton, most of the guys tend to follow the event circuit bring different models to the previous weeks event. There was a lot of real interest in what we were doing fortunately I took some Model flying NZ newsletters with me, many showed interest in combining our Omarama April event with holidays they are planning for New Zealand. 14 Ian Harvey writes The photo is from an old slide I found in my work collection. It was labelled " Inaugural F3J contest Jan 1996". I am guessing that it was the Nat's we had at Wigram and the Willows at New Year and shows Ray Colville, Angus MacDonald, Ian Harvey and Chris Kaiser. If I remember back 20 odd years, Angus and I flew off down wind in good lift and I arrived back last to win, but the records might record something different! 14

15 THE FUSELAGE and its inherent problems, as known by BigT. Most of the radio control enthusiasts tend to either build their own balsa models, or fly ARF's, but there are those of us out there that build using other materials and methods. In this brief article I will explain the methodology used when building a model using a moulded fibreglass fuselage. The moulded fuselage has started life as a carved solid wood item (called the plug) and during that carving process many factors have been considered, namely: wing saddle, side and down thrust of the engine, separation of the cowling, underbelly, mould split line and any other feature deemed important at that time. Lets consider only the wing saddle at this moment...always use that as your datum, or reference point as that is a fixed item- realistically you cannot alter it. You may say that the spinner area is a good place to start- you could be right - because it is so small then this is where the inaccuracies will occur. Clear your workbench and set the fuselage on a rigid frame that sets the wing saddle horizontal in all directions, even spot-gluing everything to the bench, as you don't want anything to move. The next item is to set your tail plane height and make a jig that you can use to mark the centreline of the tail plane airfoil- mark both sides of the fuselage in the correct position and once that is completed you will know that the wing and tail plane will be parallel...isn't that ideal? Assuming you have already made a tail plane you could then do the appropriate cutting of the fuselage- I use a DREMEL- and properly mount the tail plane to the fuselage ensuring correct alignment in both side and top views. Being an older modeller I have learnt a few tricks and one of the quickest ways to check alignment in a birds-eye view is to use a telescopic 'whip' aerial from an old transmitter. Try it and you will find it works very well The rudder could also be aligned but be aware that any moulding joint line in the fuselage may not be accurate and a thorough check should be done before finally gluing the rudder in place- again use the whip aerial to check everything. We have all used the join line and I bet many have been caught! To get the back end of the model accurate is the first, and very important stage in having a good flying model. My next stage is to check the spinner area of the fuselage for verticality- use a large builders square for that as the last thing you want is any up thrust on the engine- I aim for about 1-2 of down thrust which can be easily sanded into that spinner area, and with practice you will get it right. The last thing you want is left thrust so ensure that also is correct when viewed from above. Finally you will need your engine, engine mount and spinner... all assembled as one unit. I then spot glue a piece of 1.5mm ply (with a very large centre hole) to the spinner area of the fuselage. Holding the complete item you can then measure from the spinner back plate to the rear of the engine mount and then transfer that dimension onto the fuselage- marking with a fine felt tip pen- you have now located the position of the firewall. Again check both side view and top view for accuracy. At this point you may remove the fuselage from the workbench however I tend to leave it in place for as long as I can Making and setting up the firewall is easy - I'll explain that in a continuation of this article. 15
