17 th Annual Caribbean Energy Conference Santo Domingo Jan th 2017 Multi-site Solar Project By Clive Hosten Chief Engineer
Introduction Grenada Spice Isle situated Lat12 N, Long 61 W, area of 133 sq. miles Three diesel power plants with peak loads: Grenada 31MW, Carriacou 1.2MW and Petite Martinique 170kW Installed Capacity 49MW in Grenada Customers 47,000 33kV Transmission ring at south of island at the load center 12 radial distribution feeders at 11kV New ESA and PURCA legislated in Aug 2016
Renewable Energy We have worked on Renewable Energy since Initial focus on wind energy. Created a mesomap with projected wind speeds around the island Installed five 50m met towers at various properties throughout the island. We have good wind data. Wind Diesel project in Carriacou with 2MW of wind, land lease secured, EIA completed. EU funding withdrawn. Transportation Study completed at three sites in Grenada and the wind site in Carriacou Member on the Waste to Energy steering committee with the Waste Management Authority Solar became a priority when the price dropped Purchased three electric vehicles with pedestal charging stations
Renewable Energy Customer owned RE Interconnection In 2007 we were the first utility in the region to introduce a program for customer owned RE grid interconnection Started with a Pilot program of Net Metering (1:1) 10% of peak load 300kW Next tranche was changed to net billing buy all sell all with standard offer of 500kW. This was followed by another 500kW offer. 1MW installed with105 customers Buy all Sell all
Renewable Energy Challenges Lots of small plots with different owners Difficulty in locating land owners Obtaining legal title from land owners Constructability due to land topography and narrow winding roads High costs of land close to residential and beach areas
Solar In 2013 commissioned 148kW of roof top solar on three buildings at our T&D compound in Grand Anse Installed 31kW of solar in Petite Martinique which represents 20% of peal load Installed 14kW on roof of a secondary school SASS Our community partnership initiative (GCPI) installed 14kW on each of three Care Institutions in 2015 GCPI procured solar panels for three more Care Institutions in 2017 In 2016 we were able to secure land in Pearls St Andrews (34 acres) for a Solar project
Multi-site Solar Project Our Approach Review all lands owned by company Decided on three locations and looked at ways to maximize solar Decided on roof top on buildings, ground mounts and car ports Total of approximately 1MW of solar Prepared RFP with selected bidders Awarded a Design build contract in Oct 2015
Distributed Small Scale Solar Sites allocations Grand Anse Storage Shed 44.1KW Switchgear building 8.8kW Car port Employee Parking 120.9kW Car port Customer parking 22.7kW Queens Park Car Port Employee Parking 30.2kW Switchgear building 8.8kW Substation building 17.6kW Office roof top 26.5kW Power Plant building roof top 49.1kW Ground mount hill side 268.4kW Plains Ground mount 340.2kW
Distributed Small Scale Solar Design 3000 solar panels 315W, 72 cells SMA inverters 3 phase string 8kVA, 15kVA and 25kVA Ground fault protection (GFI on all circuits) Racking (wind speed 150 mph) Screw Anchors for ground mounts Racks to for Flat concrete roofs Rack for Pitch metal roof Tall shed for Stores to accommodate easy removal of large and heavy items Cantilever roof design for three car ports to accommodate max number of vehicles
Distributed Small Scale Solar Considerations and challenges Pull test for ground mounts Structural evaluation of roof top of buildings Preparation of ESIA EMI impact on surroundings Rain water run off from the car ports Installation on steep slope for hill side Drainage for ground mount to reduce flooding risk Logistics for temporary parking during construction of car ports Logistics and coordination of storage items for project
Pictures of installations GRENLEC Car Port Hill side at Queens Park Storage Shed Roof top installations at Queens Park
Distributed Small Scale Solar Benefits Using property already owned reduces costs Installation on different feeders improves reliability, voltage profiles and reduce line losses. Impact of weather (cloud cover) is reduced with installations spread geographically across the island Car ports provides shading for vehicles
Roof top Car Port Car Port Grand Anse Site
Ground Mounts Ground Mounts Roof top Car Port Roof top Queens Park Site
Plains Site (Ground Mounts)
Summary Capacity (DC) kw RE generation 1.6 GWh/annum RE penetration 0.80% Average homes supplied 900 Avoided diesel quantity 102,000 USG/annum Avoided diesel cost 215,000 US$/annum Avoided CO2 emission 1,040,000 kg 1,040 metric tonnes
