Agenda Climate change and transportation emissions Types of vehicles available today Why EV is the right choice What you need to know if you are considering an EV Why is now a good time to purchase an EV? Federal and state incentives How an EV affects your electric bill EV charging and permitting in Alameda Q&A

Drive Clean Marin Program of Cool the Earth Grassroots organization that believes personal action is essential to reducing carbon emissions Goal to educate and inspire people to drive electric

Climate Change: Average Temperature

Effects of Climate Change Extreme Weather Agriculture Disruption Sea Level Rise Wildfires

California Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Sector, 2015 Marin data Alameda is similar

Types of Vehicles ICE - Internal combustion engines Fuels: gasoline, diesel, biofuels, natural gas Fundamental technology burning fossil fuel to create power What we think of as a regular car

Types of Vehicles HEV - Hybrid electric vehicle (Toyota Prius) Hybrid vehicle drivetrain and an electric battery. Either or both the gas and electric motor power the drivetrain. Battery recharging Spinning an electric generator when the ICE is operating Converting the vehicle s kinetic energy into electric energy through regenerative brakes

Types of Vehicles PHEV Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (Chevy Volt) Similar to the HEV; has a hybrid vehicle drivetrain and uses both gas and electric power Differences Battery can be charged by plugging in to a power source. When the battery is depleted, the plug-in hybrid starts acting as a regular hybrid, with the ICE taking the role of primary power source

Types of Vehicles FCEV - Fuel cell electric vehicle Uses hydrogen gas combined with oxygen to produce electricity, which powers an electric motor Hydrogen, the battery for fuel cell cars, is produced mainly from natural gas reformation (95%) Hydrogen requires significant energy to produce, resulting in BEV being about 3 times more efficient

Types of Vehicles BEV Battery electric vehicle No ICE or fuel tank at all Runs on a fully electric drivetrain powered by rechargeable batteries

Why Is Electric the Right Choice? Driving electric and GHG emissions Save 50% carbon Driving an EV on carbon neutral power reduces your carbon footprint by 50% Clean air Gas cars are America s biggest air quality compromisers, producing about one-third of all U.S. air pollution The smog, carbon monoxide, and other toxins emitted by vehicles are especially troubling because they leave tailpipes at street level, where humans breathe the polluted air directly into their lungs With no tailpipes, EVs do not pollute the air!

Why Is Electric the Right Choice? Gas production issues

Should I Drive My Gas Car Until It Dies? (Spoiler: No) Cradle-to-Grave Emissions CO 2 (Metric Tons) Sedan 25 mpg Prius 50 mpg Bolt EV (carbon neutral electricity) Years

Performance Acceleration & responsiveness Acceleration like you've never felt before. All torque, no shifting, will quickly and quietly move you safely in and out of traffic. Superior handling The weight distribution and responsiveness of electric cars contribute to better handling than gas cars

Performance Regenerative braking The motor is used to slow the car and add electricity back into the battery. This reduces brake wear and increases the efficiency of the car. Quiet Very little engine noise Safety EVs are smart vehicles, an iphone on wheels! Onboard computers and cameras offer greater safety features than old cars on the road. Autonomous features are many, including blind spot warnings and crash-avoidance

Low Maintenance Simple engines No oil or oil changes No radiator fluid No timing belts No fuel filters No smog checks ever! Costs about one-third the current cost of maintaining a gasoline-powered car Mainly brakes and tires

Cost of Ownership Comparison

Many Vehicle Choices Over 40 BEVs and PHEVs

Vehicle Choice: Battery Electric Vehicles Low Range Mid Range Long Range

Vehicle Choice: Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles PHEV Plug-in Hybrid Model Class Electric Battery Range BMW w Range extender Sub compact 97 Chevy Volt Compact 53 Honda Clarity Mid size 48 Chrysler Pacific Mini van 33 Hyundai Sonata Mid size 28 Toyota Prius Prime Mid size 25 Mitsubishi Outlander Small SUV 22 Ford Fusion Mid size 21

Buy or Lease? Leasing can be attractive for new cars Electric car technology is changing very rapidly Federal tax credit can be applied to the lease by the manufacturer, resulting in lower monthly payments Drivers who lease a car for 30 months or more are eligible for the California rebate Low-cost used models available for purchase

Web Resources DOE website Drive Clean Marin

Charging at Home Level one charging Simply plug into a 120V standard electricity outlet with the charging cord that comes free with your EV 4-5 miles of range per hour, miles overnight (8 hours) If you drive about miles per day, you will be able to fully recharge your battery at night Installation cost None!

Charging at Home Level two charging Level 2 chargers provide electricity to the car at 240V ~ 25 miles of range per hour, 200 miles overnight (8 hrs) Installation Best to use a licensed electrician Portability - Best to purchase a charging station with a plug to install a dedicated circuit similar to one you may have for your clothes dryer Cost $500 for the charger $200 - $2000 for electrician labor

Charging on the Road Where can I charge? Plugshare app Free Shows location of public charging stations Show details: cost, plug type, amenities

Charging on the Road How fast will the battery charge? Level two Easy and standardized for all vehicles. ~ 25 miles of range per hour All cars can accept level two J1771

Charging on the Road How fast will the battery charge? Level three Three standards: One for Tesla, one for European and American cars (CCS) and one for most cars from Asian manufacturers (CHAdeMO) ~75-90 miles in 30 minutes Tesla gets about 100 miles in 20 minutes CCS CHAdeMO

Charging on the Road How do I use the charging stations? Sign up (like Fastrak or Clipper Card) There are many companies that provide charging stations and some don t yet take credit cards. Chargepoint EVgo Blink Tap your card Plug in!

Why Electric Vehicles Now? Higher range, moderate price More models Superior performance Reliability, total cost of ownership, health Charging infrastructure, VW fines Global commitments to EVs
