3 Natural Gas Vehicles Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) are in widespread use around the globe nearly 10 million NGVs built by the world s major automakers are on the road today. In the United States alone, there are 150,000 NGVs and 1,100 refueling stations, and the numbers are rapidly expanding as more f eet operators learn the economic and environmental advantages. Several manufacturers offer a variety of light-, medium- and heavy-duty NGVs. In addition, warrantied compressed natural gas (CNG) conversions (retrof ts and repowers) are available for many popular vehicle models. NGVs for fuel savings Switching to CNG can reduce vehicle fuel costs by as much as 40 percent. NGVAmerica reports that transit buses that use CNG can expect an annual fuel cost savings of nearly $20,000 compared to conventional clean-diesel buses and more than $11,500 when compared to diesel-electric hybrid buses. The city of Culver City, Calif., saved an estimated $1.2 million per year by converting its f eet of 46 transit buses and 41 refuse trucks to CNG. For a fleet fuel-savings profile, visit

4 NGVs for the environment Petroleum-fueled vehicles contribute more than 60 percent of all carbon monoxide (CO) pollution and are the second-largest source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Natural gas is the cleanest commercially available fuel. NGVs meet or surpass all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards. Converting just one refuse truck from diesel to natural gas reduces as much pollution as taking 325 cars off the road. NGVs emit 20 percent less carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas), 70 percent less CO, 89 percent less VOCs, and 87 percent less NOx than petroleum-fueled vehicles. Unlike liquid fuels, natural gas poses no possibility of ground water contamination because it is lighter than air. In the event of a leak, it rises and dissipates into the atmosphere. Natural gas and NGVs also are a safer alternative. The ignition temperature of natural gas is 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, double that of gasoline, making combustion less likely. NGV fuel tanks are stronger than gasoline tanks they are designed to withstand heat and pressure extremes as well as punctures. Imagine the impact that powering just 10 percent of America s vehicles with CNG would have on our environment.

5 NGVs for energy independence Switching to natural gas greatly reduces America s dependence on imported oil, which now accounts for more than 70 percent of our petroleum supply. The economic impact of reducing oil imports by switching to natural gas cannot be underestimated; 98 percent of our supply is produced in North America, of which 85 percent is produced in the United States. U.S. natural gas reserves have increased by 46 percent over the last 10 years, and the exploration and production industry continues to unlock this huge resource base. The Potential Gas Committee s 2009 report of the nation s natural gas resources indicates that the United States possesses a total resource base of 1,836 trillion cubic feet. At current consumption levels, that s enough natural gas for 100 years. Due to America s newly recognized abundant natural gas resources and existing vehicle technology, the fuel of the future is available today.
