2 Viscosity ASTM D445 - Standard Test Method for Kinematic Viscosity of Transparent and Opaque Liquids (ASTM D445) For the determination of the kinematic viscosity of all liquid petroleum products which exhibit Newtonian flow behaviour, whether transparent or opaque, by use of a glass capillary viscometer. 3 Distillation ASTM D86 - Standard Test Method for Distillation of Petroleum Products at Atmospheric Pressure Applicable to the atmospheric distillation of petroleum products by use of a laboratory batch distillation unit in order to determine quantitatively the boiling range characteristics of these products. Examples of such products being light and middle distillates, automotive spark-ignition engine fuels, aviation turbine fuels, diesel fuels, biodiesel blends, white spirits and kerosene. 4 Total Acid Number ASTM D664 - Standard Test Method for Acid Number of Petroleum Products by Potentiometric Titration New and used petroleum products, biodiesel and blends of biodiesel may contain acidic constituents that are present as additives or as degradation products formed during service, such as oxidation products. The relative amount of these materials can be determined by titrating with bases. The acid number is a measure of this amount of acidic substance in the oil, always under the conditions of the test. The acid number is used as a guide in the quality control of lubricating oil formulations. It is also sometimes used as a measure of lubricant degradation in service. 5 Viscosity ASTM D The CCS apparent viscosity of automotive engine oils correlates with low temperature engine cranking. CCS apparent viscosity is not suitable for predicting low temperature flow to the engine oil pump and oil distribution system. 6 Colour ASTM D156 - Standard Test Method for Saybolt Colour of Petroleum Products For the determination of the colour of petroleum products such as undyed motor and aviation gasoline, jet fuels, napthas and kerosine, using the Saybolt Colour scale. Where the colour of the petroleum product is darker than -16 Saybolt Colour, then the ASTM D1500 colour scale should be used. 7 Density ASTM D Standard Test Method for Density and Relative Density of Liquids by Digital Density Meter For the determination of density, relative density and API Gravity of those petroleum distillates and oils that can be handled in a normal manner at the required test temperature, either by manual or automatic injection. The method is restricted to those materials that have a total vapour pressure typically below 100 kpa and have a viscosity typically below 15,000 mm2/s (cst) at the test temperature. It is allowed to exceed the vapour pressure limit as long as it can be seen that no air bubbles form in the U-shaped oscillating tube during the test. 8 Flash Point ASTM D93, Proc. A - Standard Test Method for Flash Point by Pensky-Martens Closed Cup Tester For the determination of the flash point of petroleum products that can be found in the temperature range of between C, whether by manual or automated Pensky-Martens closed cup flash apparatus. Procedure A is applicable to any new and in use lubricants, diesel, biodiesel blends, kerosene, heating oils and turbine fuels that are not found in the scopes for procedures B or C. 9 Sulfur IP Determination of sulfur content of automotive fuels - Ultraviolet fluorescence method This International Standard specifies an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence test method for the determination of the sulfur content of motor gasolines containing up to 3.7% (m/m) oxygen (including those blended with ethanol up to about 10% (V/V) and of diesel fuels including those containing up to about 10% (V/V) fatty acid methylester (FAME) having sulphur contents in the range 3 mg/kg to 500 mg/kg. 10 Freezing Point ASTM D Standard Test Method for Freezing Point of Aviation Fuels For the determination of the temperature below which solid hydrocarbon crystals can form in aviation turbine fuels and aviation gasoline. In order for aircraft filter systems to function correctly the freezing point of the fuel must, at all times, be lower than that of the minimum tank operational temperature. 11 Aromatics ASTM D For the determination of monoaromatic and di-aromatic hydrocarbon contents in aviation kerosines and petroleum distillates which are in the boiling range of C. Examples being Jet A & Jet A-1 fuels, with the total aromatic content being determined from the sum of the individual hydrocarbon types. 13 Flash Point ASTM D92 - Standard Test Method for Flash and Fire Points by Cleveland Open Cup Tester The flash point is one measure of the tendency of the test specimen to form a flammable mixture with air under controlled laboratory conditions. It is only one of a number of properties that should be considered in assessing the overall flammability hazard of a material. 14 Metals ASTM D Standard Test Method for Multielement Determination of Used and Unused Lubricating Oils and Base Oils by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) This test method covers the determination of additive elements, wear metals, and contaminants in used and unused lubricating oils and base oils by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The proficiency testing scheme evaluates the analysis of zinc, phosphorous and calcium by this method.
