The company designs, develops, manufactures, markets and supports commercial and military aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines. It has content on engines in all power and thrust categories and across all major engine components and subsystems, such as compressors, combustors, turbines and engine controls. The company cooperates with the world s major engine makers. Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of commercial engines being an MTU core competency, the company is the world s largest provider of independent engine services. MTU employs about 7,500 people and has affiliates in major regions and markets worldwide. From its headquarters in Munich, MTU operates engine MRO affiliates in Germany (Hannover and Berlin-Brandenburg), Canada (Vancouver), China (Zhuhai), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and Poland that provide individually tailored service packages at the customers door-step. 2 MTU s maintenance shops have made repair beats replacement their motto. MTU Maintenance Zhuhai is a joint venture between parent company MTU Aero Engines and China s largest air carrier, China Southern Airlines.

The carrier maintains an extensive network serving more than 905 domestic and international destinations in 169 countries from its Guangzhou and Beijing hubs. Covering an area of 156,000 square meters, the facility is located in Zhuhai s free trade zone in southern China, in close proximity to Hong Kong and Macao. The shop improves MTU s access to the booming Chinese market. For China Southern and other airlines in China and elsewhere in Asia, the shop in turn provides access to a highly flexible provider of state-of-the-art commercial engine services, helping the airlines to reduce costs and shorten turnaround times. Having started operations in January 2003, MTU Maintenance Zhuhai brings quality overhaul and repair services for V2500 and CFM56 engines to the doorstep of airlines in China and elsewhere in Asia. The maintenance shop repairs around 200 engines annually and boosts that number to 300 over time. The shop was certified and approved by CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China) in April 2003, by the European EASA in July 2003 and by FAA (Federal Aviation Authority) in November In total MTU Maintenance Zhuhai uses roughly 20 approvals worldwide. The new state-of-the-art facility is equipped to perform all necessary processes, such as parts cleaning, high-pressure water stripping, nondestructive testing, surface treatment, welding, machining, plasma spraying and heat treatment, which gives the shop full repair capabilities to the highest industry standards, all under one roof. The test cell is one of the largest and most advanced in the world. It is 100 meters long, 13 by 13 meters in cross-section and has intake and exhaust ducts 30 meters high. It accommodates all commercial engine types up to a thrust of 150,000 pounds and is capable of testing 500 engines annually.
