3 02 /03 Andreas Kopf Managing director The world s first phthalate-free vinyl flooring comes from Dessau. And because we like consistent solutions, we are, from now on, switching our entire range to softeners based on natural raw materials. If you want something truly new, you need the courage to tackle radical solutions. We are the world s first manufacturer of vinyl floors to exclusively use softeners based on natural raw materials. For many years, this was considered impossible. But we presented the first phthalate-free flooring in 2006 and have, since then, conducted intense research and testing. We switched our entire range in January In this, citric acid-based softeners will take the place of phthalates. So where do we get this consistency and tenacity from? We find our most important source of inspiration right next door: Bauhaus Dessau. When Bauhaus came to Dessau in the 1920s, the white building appeared almost like a UFO in the city s more traditional setting. But the teaching and designs here had phenomenal influence on classic modernism. Systematic experiments on new materials were carried out. And it was not just a question of craving new things for their own sake. Teachers and students stood for more than just a new aestheticism. Ultimately they wanted to improve the circumstances of everyday life for all of us. And as we live and work in this tradition, we must stay true to the principles in our quest for a sustainable solution to the question of softeners. We searched and we found. And in this, Debolon shows once more that vinyl flooring is not just a durable, but also an environmental investment in improved housing and living conditions.

4 04 /05 About Debolon Today, Gropius would surely choose vinyl. Which is why Bauhaus inspires us every day constantly and continually questioning traditional rules and remained searching for new materials, forms and colours. Wall paints, flooring, materials for furniture things we now take for granted were developed and tested for the first time at Bauhaus. For instance, in constructing the Bauhaus building, Walter Gropius drew on recently developed triolin for flooring a synthetic material in which nitrocellulose, bulking agents and gelatinisation agents are applied to a matrix of hemp fibres. But production was soon abandoned, as triolin is easily flammable. In addition, the industrial sector had also developed better materials. Nowadays, triolin is just a historical episode on show in Walter Gropius study in Bauhaus, restored as a faithful reconstruction. Today, Gropius would surely choose vinyl. This is not one of our quotes, it is by Professor Dr. Omar Akbar, Director of the Bauhaus Foundation from 1998 to Vinyl is a lasting and durable flooring that offers endless design options and that can match any other in terms of environmental friendliness and is therefore a perfectly obvious choice. But what do we learn from this source of inspiration? Only a tenacious quest for the new and the improved will lead to permanent transformation. The willingness to question what we achieve must never come to an end. After all, yesterday s right solution can be tomorrow s wrong answer, because there are better ones. This is why we do not imitate Bauhaus. The 1920s are indeed a long time ago. And Bauhaus too produced or inspired many solutions that have long since been confined to the past. But we do ask ourselves frequently:»what would Gropius do today? And we are certain: even if environmental aspects did not play a predominant role in 1920s Bauhaus, today they would increasingly think in ecological dimensions. And this is why we are the world s first manufacturer to develop vinyl flooring that does without phthalates as softeners. Gropius would be thrilled!
