KG100 conversion to the He177. At the beginning of the Russian Campaign I/KG 4, equipped with He111s had been operating in the central sector of the front and in the autumn of 1942 the Gruppe was withdrawn to Lechfeld, where conversion to the He177 commenced. The crews, the majority of whom had a large number of operations to their credit were concentrated into the 3rd Staffel which was the first to commence training. Shortly afterwards the 2nd and later the 1st Staffel were formed with crews drawn from II, III and IV/KG 4. Training commenced on He177s of the O series but early in 1943 these were replaced by the A-1s; the A-3 did not appear at Lechfeld until the end of August of that year. Up to September 1943 the Gruppe was still part of KG 4 and the crews under training were still wearing the General Weaver armband. On 1st October the crews were told that the Gruppe had been renamed I/KG100 and the armbands duly removed
