3 Rotorcraft Occupant Protection ARAC ARAC Rotorcraft Occupant Protection Working Group (ROPWG) stood up in January, 2016 Interim report completed and provided to FAA March 2018 Recommended a subset of regulations for improved crashworthiness of fuel systems and seats and structure for previously approved type designs that are still in production (newly manufactured rotorcraft) Final Task 6 to ROPWG is looking at improvements to the existing fleet. Report completed and provided to FAA October 3, 2018 Recommendations are under review by FAA.

4 What led to our focus on occupant Protection? FAA research shows the majority of fatal accidents (92%) are attributable to blunt force trauma rather than post-crash fires Occupants must survive the crash and then the fuel system should prevent a post-crash fire Links to ARAC ROPWG Reports Future Manufacturing Existing Fleet Not on FAA Website yet. 5 Bird Strike ARAC Dramatic increase in number of Rotorcraft Bird Strikes 250 Bird strike Count No current bird strike rule for Part 27, which is 90% of the fleet. 5

6 Rotorcraft Bird Strike Protection ARAC was tasked April 27, 2016: Organizational Policy & Innovation Compliance & System Oversight Enterprise Performance Incorporate Division bird Division strike protection Airworthiness (BSP) Division into part Division 27 for new Operations certifications Division (AIR 300) (AIR 600) (AIR 700) (AIR 800) (AIR 900) Incorporate BSP into part 27 for newly manufactured rotorcraft (NMR) Enhance current part 29 BSP requirements for new certifications Make enhanced BSP requirements effective for part 29 NMR Incorporate BSP requirements for part 27/29 existing fleet? Consider non-traditional BSP technology.
