Though advanced for the 1930s, by the end of the decade the fighter was outclassed by modern monoplanes. Some B-534s were used by the Slovak air force in the invasion of Poland, and a number were flown by the Bulgarians, but they saw limited combat. B-534 This card represents both the B-534 and the re-gunned Bk-534 The PZL.37 Łoś ( Elk ) was an advanced medium bomber from Poland s PZL state aviation works. It carried a large bomb load and could operate from rough airstrips. When the Germans invaded, PZL.37s were dispersed to rough fields. This saved them from destruction, but severely limited operations and the weight of bomb load they could carry. Despite losses, they succeeded in slowing the enemy advance in places. PZL.37 This card assumes the bomber is based at a rough field. If operating from an regular airfield, increase the Bombs value to its Max Load Poland s primary reconnaissance aircraft and light bomber was the PZL.23 Karaś ( Carp ) from the PZL state aviation works. By 1939 it was obsolescent, due to being chronically underpowered and lacking protection. In the invasion of Poland the PZL.23 suffered heavy combat losses at the hands of enemy fighters and flak. The P.11 was the product of Poland s PZL state aviation works. It was advanced for the mid-1930s an all-metal monoplane with a high gull wing but by 1939 it fallen way behind the cutting edge. Though it put up a brave fight during the invasion of Poland it was overwhelmed by the Luftwaffe s modern fighters. P.11 This card represents the Polish P.11a and P.11c, as well as the P.11b in service with Romania Š-328 Šmolík R-Z Su-2 I-15 Chaika The Letov Š-328 was derived from the Š-28 reconnaissance aircraft and was the primary Czech light bomber up to the occupation. Some aircraft were used by the Slovak air force in Poland and the Soviet Union. Slovak pilots would later fly them during the Nationalist uprising. A number were flown by the Bulgarians and the Luftwaffe even employed them as a nightfighter. Š-328 This card represents all variants of the type, including the Š-28, Š-128, Š-228 and Š-428 A development of the R-5 light reconnaissance bomber, the modernised Polikarpov R-Z boasted a monocoque fuselage and an improved engine. The aircraft would go on to see service in Spain and Mongolia. By the time of the German invasion, the R-Z was being replaced in service with the IL-2, though some light bomber regiments continued to use the type. R-ZSh Shturmovik variant Increase Firepower to 1/0 Pavel Sukhoi s team was tasked with designing a simple light bomber combining high speed with modern construction. The resulting Su-2 was a tough little bomber that bore the brunt of the early fighting during the German invasion of Russia. It was eventually eclipsed by the IL-2 and Pe-2 and was withdrawn from the front line from 1942 onward. Su-2 Early variant with reduced armour Reduce Protection to 3-4 The Polikarpov I-15 Chaika ( Seagull ) was so-called because of the gull-shape of its upper wing. Pilots were divided on its virtues, some liking its manoeuvrability, while others found the wing configuration a problem, particularly during take-off and landing. I-15 fighters were deployed to Spain and a later version, the I-152, with a more conventional biplane layout, saw combat in China and Mongolia. Some were still in service by the time of the German invasion, but were obsolete. I-152 (aka I-15 bis) Model with conventional wing, available late 37

In the invasion crisis of May 1940 they were to serve as escorts and ground attack aircraft against German forces along the Grebbe Line. At the Dutch surrender they were burned to prevent them falling into enemy hands. The Fokker T.V was designed around an aerial cruiser requirement for a multirole bomber and bomber-destroyer. The resulting five-man aircraft was equipped with a forward-firing cannon (albeit with a small ammo box). The T.V fought briefly as a fighter in the May War before reverting to a bombing role against the Maas bridges. T.V When assigned an Intercept, Sweep or Escort mission, the following applies: Add the Rear View ability Add Heavy Gun 2 ability Fokker built the D.XXI as a lightweight fighter for the Dutch colonial army. Squadrons were also formed for the metropolitan Luchtvaartafdeling, and it was Holland s primary fighter of the May War. Though underarmed and underpowered, the D.XXI was agile and performed well against opponents such as the Bf 109. D.XXI This data card represents all Dutch variants of the fighter, including the D.XXI-2, -4 and -5 D.XXI-3 License-built Finnish variant with armour and self-sealing tanks Increase Protection to 4 In the throes of rearmament, France commissioned a cheap, modern fighter from the Dutch firm Koolhoven. Erich Schatzki, a Jewish refugee, designed the F.K.58, which developed concepts he had used in his D.XXI design at Fokker. Only a squadron of the aircraft had been delivered to the French before Germany invaded. They were flown by Poles protecting French aircraft factories and did not see air combat. F.K.58 This data card represents all variants of the fighter, including the F.K.58, and FK.58A G.I C.X C.V Fokker s G.I was a revolutionary and influential twin-boom heavy fighter design. The twin engines allowed the fighter to carry an impressive battery of machineguns. When the May War began, a number of G.Is were caught on the ground in the Luftwaffe s surprise first strike. The remainder fought on in the fighter and ground attack role. Export versions were made for Spain and Finland but none were delivered before the German invasion. The Fokker C.X was designed as a light bomber and recce aircraft for the Dutch colonial army, and some were to serve with the metropolitan Army Aviation Brigade, the Luchtvaartafdeling, performing low-level attack duties during the Five-Day War. Fokker s C.V series was a multirole bomber of 1920 s vintage. In spite of its age it served faithfully in the recce and ground support role during the invasion of Holland. The type had been an export success for the Dutch, seeing service in many air forces. C.V This card represents the C.Vd recce aircraft and the C.Ve light bomber, as well the S 6 in Swedish service, the Ro.1 in Italian serivce and WM-9 in Hungarian serivice

Aircraft Data Cards, Sheet 3 Reverse XXXX Albacore TB Mk.I Wellington Mk.IC Roc Mk.I Beaufort Mk.I Intended as a replacement for the Fairey Swordfish, the Fairey Albacore was another biplane torpedo bomber. Though it went on to equip the fleet and take part in actions such as the Battle of Cape Matapan, it was mostly confined to coastal work and support for ground troops. In 1943 the aircraft was gradually replaced by the Barracuda. A robust and versatile Vickers design, the Wellington medium bomber served in the front line from 1939 to 1945 in nearly every theatre. In Europe the threat from fighters soon forced the Wellington to bomb at night. But in the Mediterranean, Middle-East and the Far East, it performed long-range daylight bombing right up to the end. Wellington This data card represents all the major bomber variants, including the Wellington Mk.I and Mk.IA (available Oct 38), as well as the Mk.II, Mk.III, Mk.IV and Mk.X. As with the Defiant, the Blackburn Roc was built around the turret fighter concept, in which fighters would fly alongside bombers and pound them with gun broadsides. However, in its brief service it became clear that the Roc was underpowered, dangerously vulnerable and unable to catch enemies, let alone shoot them. After a brief period in the front line the Roc was withdrawn to second-line duties. Building on their experience with the Blenheim, the Bristol company s Beaufort was a land-based torpedo bomber of unexceptional performance. Phased out of service by RAF Coastal Command in 1942, it went on to fight in other theatres, seeing considerable use in the Mediterranean and Pacific. A much modified fighter version of the aircraft would find fame as the Beaufighter. Beaufort This data card represents all combat variants, including the Mk.I and Mk.II, as well as the Australian-built Mk.V to Mk.VIII Seafire F Mk.IIC Defiant Mk.I Skua Mk.II Ju 86D-1 Supermarine s adaptation of the Spitfire VB for naval use was a stop-gap that could fit in the hangars of the new armoured deck carriers. The resulting fighter had good performance but was fragile for carrier operations and, critically, lacked endurance. This meant that it was often reserved for defensive use as a point interceptor. Seafire Mk.IB Early model, available Jun 42 For the Seafire LF Mk.IIC, refer to the Seafire LF Mk.III Aircraft Data Card The Boulton Paul company s Defiant was ordered because of doubts about the effectiveness of aircraft armament. The RAF Air Staff believed that bomber formations outgunned fighters with fixed guns, so encouraged the development of a turreted bomber-destroyer that would fly alongside raiders and engage them with massed firepower. However, the scheme relied on the bombers operating unescorted, and German fighters soon had the measure of the Defiant. After heavy casualties the aircraft was withdrawn from daylight combat in Jul 40. It would go on to have a second, though ineffectual, career as a night fighter. Britain s Royal Air Force was uninterested in dive bombing, but the Royal Navy was keen to use the technique and acquired the Skua from Blackburn Aircraft. Because the fleet demanded multi-role aircraft the Skua was sometimes mis-employed as a fighter. However, its vulnerability to modern fighters and its light bomb load led to it being withdrawn from combat after Feb 41. Born from the same requirement for an airliner and bomber that would also produce the He 111, the Junkers design was based around diesel powerplants, which offered superior fuel efficiency and range. However, a lack of engine reliability meant that the Junkers aircraft lost out to the Heinkel machine for production orders. The Ju 86D served in Spain, while later petrol-engined variants were employed successfully as high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. Ju 86A-1 Early production variant Ju 86B, C Transport variants

A number were sent to Spain, only to find themselves outclassed as fighters and relegated to the close support role. A number of Heinkels participated in the invasion of Poland as close-support aircraft before being retired from the front line. He 51A-1 Early fighter variant May not carry bombs He 51C-1 -bomber variant Increase Bombs value to 6 Messerschmitt lacked the Daimler-Benz engines that would turn its lightweight fighter airframe into a world-beater, so as an interim had to make do with Junkers engines. The resulting Bf 109D lacked speed, but in its short-lived career it served in Spain and in the Polish campaign before being replaced by the superlative Bf 109E. Bf 109A, B Early variants, available Mar 37 Bf 109C Early variant, produced in small numbers A candidate for the Luftwaffe s main fighter, Heinkel s He 112 was beaten in competition by the Bf 109. It was underpowered and more expensive to build than the Messerschmitt machine. Around a hundred were built, mostly for export, and it saw limited combat in Spain, as well as service in the Japanese Navy and Romania. Sometimes touted as a Wunderwaffen that never was, the He 100 was intended to be Heinkel s answer to the Bf 109 and used the same engine. Sacrificing everything for speed, the He 100 broke speed records and was blisteringly fast, even when equipped with guns. It boasted novel features, such as a low-drag cooling system in the wings. However, this would have rendered the aircraft more vulnerable to battle damage. In the end, the need to prioritise engines for the Bf 109 resulted in the cancellation of the Heinkel fighter. A dozen or so production planes featured in propaganda and were flown in a factory defence unit, but never saw front line combat. Do 17E-1 He 111E-1 He 70F-2 He 46C-1 Dornier s Do 17 flying pencil was a slim, high-winged bomber with good handling qualities. It also had the benefit of using existing engines at a time when a lack of powerplants was affecting the He 111 and Ju 86 programs. Though touted as a fast bomber, the early versions lacked pace at combat loads. Do 17F Recce variant Does not carry bombs Do 17K Export version in Yugoslav service Based on an airliner, the Heinkel He 111 would become ubiquitous in the Luftwaffe bomber arm, serving in numerous roles from bomber to transport. However, early variants were underpowered and underwent many revisions. Despite service with the Condor Legion and the Hungarian air force, the use of magnesium alloy in the airframe made the aircraft a fire risk in combat and so it was soon withdrawn to a liaison and courier role. However, its elliptical wing was to inspire both the He 111 and He 112. He 70E Light bomber variant He 70K License-built Hungarian version, renamed He 170A Designed as a short-range recce and army cooperation aircraft before the Nazis came to power, Heinkel s He 46 monoplane saw service in Spain as an attack aircraft, but equipped just a couple of units by the time of the Polish invasion. It was brought back to front-line serive in 1943 as a night-harassment bomber. He 46 This data card represents all variants, including the C-2 export version

Problems with engine reliability and the fuel tanks meant that it never served Italy in large numbers. However, it was an export success with the Swedish and Hungarian air forces, seeing combat in Russia with the latter. With a more powerful German engine an upgraded version would see modest success as the Re.2001 Falco II. J 20 Swedish variant, in service from 1941 Héja ( Hawk ) Hungarian variant, in service from late 41 Regarded as one of the most modern medium bombers in the world when it entered service in 1936, the Fiat BR.20 Cicogna ( Stork ) was a reliable, all-metal bomber with some protection features. It saw service in Spain and China, but by the time world war broke out, it was approaching obsolescence, lacking the speed and armament for modern combat. BR.20 This card represents all major variants, including the BR.20 and BR.21 I-Type Variant in Japanese Army service, codenamed Ruth by the Allies Intended by Savoia-Marchetti as a replacement for the SM.79 Sparviero, the SM.84 was essentially a new fuselage and engines built around the Sparviero wing. The resulting aircraft saw service in the Mediterranean but did not handle as well as its predecessor and was unpopular with crews. It was eventually retired in favour of the aircraft it was meant to replace. SM.84 This card represents the SM.84 and the SM.84 bis A militarised version of Savoia-Marchetti s SM.73 airliner, the SM.81 Pipistrello ( Bat ) was a tri-motor bomber rushed into service as a result of the Ethiopian crisis. A solid utility aircraft, it would go on to serve in Spain and was still in use by the opening of the Second World War, though mainly in a second-line role, often as a transport. CR.32 Z.1007 bis Alcione Ro.37 Ba.65 Fiat s CR.32 was a mainstay of the Italian air force in the mid-1930s. Robust and aerobatic, it was an outstanding fighter for its era and a major export success. It saw extensive service in Spain where it helped establish air superiority for the Nationalists. However, as faster monoplanes entered service, the CR.32 began to look obsolescent. It would serve until May 41, though its late successes were mainly on the periphery of the World War, such as in East Africa. CR.32 This card represents all major variants, including the CR.32 bis, CR.32 ter and CR.32 quater The tri-motor Z.1007 Alcione ( Kingfisher ) was built by the CANT company for speed, resulting in compromises to protection and ergonomics. Problems with powerplant reliability were resolved with the re-engined Z.1007 bis, though issues with the wooden structure caused problems in the harsh environments of Russia and Africa. Blooded in the raids on Malta, it served in both the bombing and anti-ship role. Z.1007 This card represents all major variants, including the Z.1007 Alcione and Z.1007 bis Designed as a reconnaissance aircraft, the biplane Ro.37 Lince ( Lynx ) was the product of the Meridionali company. Standard equipment in observation units, it saw action in Ethiopia and Spain, and was still flying into The Ro.37 was to serve in many roles other than observation, including as an attack aircraft and even as a heavy fighter. 12 Wing Leader:?? Aircraft Data Cards, Sheet 6 Reverse XXXX B4Y1 Allied Codename: Jean The design team at the Yokosuka Arsenal designed the B4Y (or Type 96 Carrier Attack Bomber ) as a replacement for the disappointing B3Y. The three-man biplane had a short career, but saw combat in China before being replaced with more modern monoplanes. D1A2 Allied Codename: Susie The Imperial Japanese Navy s interest in dive-bombers resulted in the Aichi D1A2 (or Type 96 Carrier Bomber ), a single-engined two-seat biplane based on the Heinkel He 50. Primarily employed in China, the aircraft was reduced to a second-line role by the time of Pearl Harbor. D1A1 Early variant (aka Type 94 Carrierbased Bomber ), available from 1934 A4N1 The Nakajima A4N (or Type 95 Carrierbased ) was an interim biplane design, intended to tide the Navy over until the arrival of modern monoplane fighters. The A4N would see service as a fighter and fighter-bomber against the Chinese before its replacement in 1938 by the A5M. Ki-10-II Allied Codename: Perry The Kawasaki Ki-10 (or Type 95 Army ) marked the moment when the manoeuvre faction in Army aviation won out over the speed proponents. Their reward was a nimble, sleek biplane design that performed well against the modestlyequipped Chinese, but by the outbreak of the Pacific War the biplane was no longer competitive and was being replaced by increasingly fast monoplanes. It required a great bomb load and range, which was achieved at the expense of protection. It performed numerous feats of arms in China and the early stages of the Pacific War, before being replaced by the G4M Betty. G3M1 Early variant, entered service 1936 Reduce Firepower to 0 G3M3 Long-range version, entered service summer 41 The Imperial Army s standard dive-bomber of the war was the Mitsubishi Ki-51 (or Type 99 Assault Plane ). Initially deployed in China, it played a major role in the China-Burma-India theatre, its major virtue being an ability to operate from small rough strips. The Ki-51 would remain in service until the end, ultimately being pressed into action as a Kamikaze. Ki-51 Late production variants were upgunned Increase Firepower to 1 The Mitsubishi A5M (or Type 96 Carrierbased ) was the first all-metal monoplane to enter service with the Imperial Japanese Navy. Thrown into the fighting in China in 1937 it proved capable against American monoplanes in Chinese service, such as the P-26. But by the beginning of the war with America it was being phased out in favour of the A6M Zero. A5M Early variants such as the A5M1, A5M2 and A5M3 lacked drop tanks Remove Drop Tanks ability The Imperial Army s Ki-30 (or Type 97 Light Bomber ) met its mid-1930s requirements for a modern light bomber. It proved effective against weak opposition in China, but when deployed against the Americans it was found to be vulnerable, particularly when flown without escort. After losses suffered in the Philippines, the type was retired from front-line service, though some survivors were later used for Kamikaze attacks.

Along with the Whitley and Wellington, the Hampden formed the backbone of Bomber Command for the first few years of the war. However, as a new generation of heavy bombers entered service in 1942, it was withdrawn from the front line, though it would continue to serve in the anti-shipping role with Coastal Command and the Soviets through Hampden This data card also represents the anti-shipping Hampden TB Mk.I An development of the Maryland bomber, Martin increased the size of the fuselage and upgraded the engines to create a sturdy and fast light bomber. Designated A-30 by the US Army Air Corps, it was never used by the US. Instead, it was pressed into service with British and Commonwealth forces, which renamed it the Baltimore and employed it extensively in North Africa and the Mediterranean. A-30 This data card represents all variants of the bomber, including the Britishdesignated Baltimore B.I, B.II, B.III, B.IV and B.V The Curtiss BF2C was designed as a carrier fighter-bomber for the US Navy. However, its career was short-lived, due to problems with the landing gear and metal wings. The export version, named the Hawk III, had wood-framed wings and did not suffer the same problems. The Hawk III saw action with both the Chinese and Thai air forces. However, the aircraft was outclassed when facing more modern opponents. In China they were eventually relegated to night actions and the training role. Hawk III Export variant in Chinese, Thai, Turkish and Argentine service The Curtiss-Wright CW-21B (named Demon in some sources but called the Interceptor by the Dutch) was designed as a lightweight fighter with a blistering rate of climb. The US Army Air Corps thought its handling too tricky and declined to buy it. Some were sold to the Chinese, while 24 aircraft were bought by the military of the Netherlands East Indies. Lacking firepower and armour, these were mostly destroyed in the battles over Java. Seeing limited service in China, it was obsolete by the breakout of the World War. However, it saw some action in the early stages of the invasion of the Philippines. Douglas designed the A-17 as the US Army s attack bomber, but it was outmoded by the start of the war and relegated to training duties. The Dutch, desperate for combat aircraft, bought 8A-3N variants just prior to the war, but a lack of bombs forced them to deploy it against the invasion as a fighter, a role for which it was unsuited. Seversky s P-35 was the first US Army Air Corps fighter with all-metal construction and retractable landing gear. A small number remained in front-line service in the Philippines when Japan attacked and saw action. Lacking armour and self-sealing tanks, the P-35 suffered at the hands of the Japanese in the defence of the islands. Exports of Brewster s F2A Buffalo were hamstrung by the additional weight of armour, and a lack of high-powered motors. However, the Dutch were able to obtain 1,200 hp powerplants for their aircraft, and with less equipment, these B-339D fighters proved more nimble than those their British Allies flew.
