3 Refining Capacity Report January 1, 2009 NPRA United States Refining and Storage Capacity Report The enclosed statistics provide U.S. refining and storage capacity data as reported by the DOE Energy Information Administration in their 2009 Petroleum Supply Annual. These data, along with other DOE statistics, are also available electronically. (See the note at the bottom of this page for details.) This report is also available on the NPRA web site ( under Publications/Statistical Reports. On January 1, 2009, there were 150 a operable refineries in the United States (excluding Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands) with total crude distillation capacity of 17.7 million barrels per calendar day (bpcd) and 18.7 million barrels per stream day. Of these, 141 refineries were operating on January 1, 2009, with operating capacity listed at 17.3 million barrels per calendar day and 18.3 million barrels per stream day. The Energy Information Administration reports that during 2008, one U.S. refinery with a capacity of 10.0 thousand barrels per stream day (downstream charge capacity) was shut down and one U.S. refinery with a capacity of 3.0 thousand barrels per calendar day was reactivated (p. 53). The following table lists the total U.S. refining capacity for the past five years: January 1 Total Capacity in Thousands of Barrels Per Calendar Day U.S. 17,125 17,339 17,444 17,594 17,672 Puerto Rico Virgin Islands This summary of petroleum refineries in the United States and U.S. territories is taken from the Department of Energy s Petroleum Supply Annual 2009, published June, Capacity data are reproduced by NPRA as a courtesy to members. The data enclosed, as well as other DOE refining statistics, are available electronically from DOE ( For information, call EIA s National Energy Information Center at , at: infoctr@eia.doe.gov a The total count of operational refineries (150) includes two chemical plants that produce gasoline blending components. (Equistar Chemicals LP, Channelview, TX and Belvieu Environmental Fuels, Mont Belvieu, TX) EIA also reclassified two existing ConocoPhillips facilities as a single facility which reduced California s count by one refinery.
