Balambica Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, India ABSTRACT The compression ignition (diesel) engine is also called as an internal combustion engine. This engine is utilized for heavy-duty vehicles due to its power like high torque, economic output. The usage of compression ignition engines has increased in the last few years because of their high economic and efficiency. The operation of the diesel engine is distressed by many parameters. One of the accentuated parameters like Fuel Injection Pressure (FIP) affect the execution of Compression Ignition (CI) Engine. It is varying the functioning of Brake Power (BP), Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC), parameters also differ. In, this research paper aims the several types of research on diesel engine performance and production of the compression ignition engine. INTRODUCTION In this section we focus the overview about the performance and emanation of a diesel engine by applying different injection pressure. There are many factors which affect the performance of diesel engine. Fuel Injection Pressure is one of the most important factor which influences the performance. A lot of research on the fuel injection systems has being carried out [1]. In present diesel engines, fuel injection systems are intended to attain higher injection pressure. So, it is aimed to decrease the exhaust emissions by increasing efficiency of diesel engines[2]. A long-drawn-out research is required in advanced injection strategies in order to increase the engine operation and to reduce the emanations from the diesel engine [3,4]. By injecting fuel into the compressed air mixture [3, 4, 5] will ignite the diesel engine By sustaining the FIP we can maintain the functioning of engine. The fuel droplets from the fuel injector will be in larger size when FIP is less. So during combustion, ignition delay period will increase and it will decrease the possibility of complete combustion. Therefore ignition delay period during combustion will increase and possibility of complete combustion decreases there by increasing the chance of producing harmful emissions and also the engine performance will decrease[6,7]. If the FIP is increased the fuel will be sprayed as small atoms of fuel into the chamber, therefore the chance of mixing fuel with air increases during the ignition delay period and by this the engine performance also increases[8,9]. If the FIP is further increased, ignition delay period decreases, chances of homogeneous mixing reduces [10,11] and combustion efficiency decreases. The optimum FIP is found by conducting this experiment on four stroke CI engine at three different FIP values. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this section focuses the materials and methods of the various researchers work. In this experiment is an water cooled four stroke single cylinder diesel engine having 5kW as rated power at 1200 rp. The setup is equipped with the cylinder pressure sensor, thermocouples, air and gas. The experiment has carried out on the engine by changing the fuel injection pressure at 150N/m 2, 170N/ m 2 and 190 N/m 2 to calculate the performance parameters. The specifications of the engine are given in the Table 1. The experiment is conducted on a 4 stroke single cylinder diesel engine and the obtained results are tabulated below: 3.1. Fuel Injection Pressure The experiment is conducted to assess the performance of the engine by varying the FIP from 150 N/m 2 to 190N/m 2. Two values of the FIP are considered and the values of BSFC and BP are obtained from the experiment shown as follows: Table 2 FIP at 150 N/m Table 3 FIP at 170 N/m editor@iaeme.com

When the FIP is 150N/m 2 and 170N/m 2, as the load is increasing from0ampere to 25 Ampere the BSFC has decreased. Whereas when the FIP is 190N/m 2 as the load increased, the BSFC has increased. From the results obtained in the tables 2, 3, and 4 the BSFC is minimum when the FIP is 170 N/m 2 and is 0.23[kg/kWh] at 25 Ampere load. The maximum BSFC of 0.79 [kg/kwh] is found at 25 Ampere load and at FIP 179 N/m 2. The variation BSFC with the load at different FIP conditions is shown in the Figure 2: Brake Power FIP=150 N/m2 FIP=170 N/m2 FIP=190 N/m2 Figure 2 BSFC Vs BP for different FIP values The above fig.2 shows that the BSFC is decreasing with increase in load and FIP value. The lowest value of BSFC for the engine is obtained at FIP of 170 N/m 2 and at a load of 25A and the value is found to be 0.23[(kg/kWh]. 4. CONCLUSIONS In this research work can be applied different the fuel injection pressure in the diesel engine. While increase in the Fuel Injection Pressure leads to decrease in BSFC. In this experiment 170 N/m 2 is found to be optimum Fuel Injection Pressure. In this experiment170 N/m 2 is found to be optimum Fuel Injection Pressure. So this work recommended to apply 170 N/m 2 is the best model compare than other two levels of fuel injection pressure of 150 N/m 2 and 190 N/m 2 models editor@iaeme.com
