2 DESCRIPTION: Following reported cases of total electrical power loss during the start sequence, Bell Helicopter is releasing this Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) to introduce a temporary change to the Rotorcraft Flight Manual (RFM) start procedure. A condition exists in which electrical power loss can occur during battery starts prior to the engine reaching a speed in which it can independently sustain itself. During this event, it is possible the engine can exceed temperature limits leading to damage. The purpose for the Temporary Revision is to recommend assisted battery starts using an auxiliary power source, or allow a battery start only after performing a successful engine crank prior to a start when an auxiliary power source is not available. A successful engine crank is defined as a 20 second engine crank without any electrical power loss. If the crank is unsuccessful, contact your maintainer prior to attempting a start. Use of an auxiliary power source will ensure that power is maintained during the start sequence and minimize the risk of damage. Bell has identified the root cause and is working urgently to certify the corrective action to alleviate this condition. This change to be introduced via an eventual revision to this ASB. Unrelated to this event, in conjunction, Bell Helicopter has introduced a 505 reissue of the RFM. This reissue changes the present format to better align with other Bell Helicopter Flight Manuals. For this reason, the Temporary Revision is available only in this newest version. A replacement flight manual will be supplied from Bell Helicopter technical publications department free of charge + a Rev 1 to follow shortly thereafter. Revision A to this bulletin updates the Subject Title to reflect the latest changes and creates a PART I and PART II to comply with. For those owner/operators having already complied with the original release of this ASB are compliant with the intent of PART I. PART II introduces electrical power system unit (EPSU) part number that is not affected by 505 Rotorcraft Flight Manual Temporary Revision BHT-505-FM-1(TR-1). The helicopter can return to conducting normal airframe battery starts with one exception. Temporary measures are now in place for EPSU to prohibit Ground Power Unit (GPU) starts until further notice. This includes battery cart assisted engine starts. Upon completion of this ASB, 505 Rotorcraft Flight Manual Temporary Revision BHT-505-FM-1(TR-1) is to be removed and replaced with 505 Rotorcraft Flight Manual Temporary Revision BHT-505-FM-1(TR-3). Any foreseeable change to BHT-505-FM-1 (TR-3) will be communicated to Model 505 owner/operators. Revision B to this bulletin revises the HELICOPTERS AFFECTED section to include additional aircraft. Additionally, this change will also require a change to the BHT-505- FM-1 Temporary Revision 3, which will be re-issued. Operators having already accomplished PART II of Revision A of this bulletin must accomplish PART II again, to ensure the correct revision of the TR-3 is installed in the Rotorcraft Flight Manual. Revision C to this bulletin is to advise it has been determined that battery assisted, or GPU assisted starts can be made satisfactorily throughout the OAT-Fuel operating envelope (505-FM-1 Section 1 Figure 1-6). PART III of this Alert Service Bulletin cancels BHT-505-FM-1 TR-3 imposed to EPSU by accomplishment of Part II of this ASB. Page 2 of 6

WARRANTY: Owners / Operators of Bell Helicopters who comply with the instructions in this Bulletin will be eligible to receive non-prorated replacement parts as applicable, listed in the bulletin. Bell Helicopter has recently introduced enhancements to the VISTA Portal which allocates specific warranty entitlement for an aircraft by serial number. The Product Service Letter (PSL) number which will be listed below the bulletin number on the introduction page is going to be a required field when submitting a claim for replacement parts, labor, and/or freight. If you receive an ASB or TB that does not have a PSL number, then there is no warranty entitlement for that bulletin. Labor entitlement: Yes $170.00USD To receive parts, labor, and/ freight under warranty: Comply with the instructions contained in this Bulletin no later than the applicable date in the compliance section. If there is a PSL number identified in the bulletin you will be required to enter this PSL number which will validate warranty entitlement for the selected aircraft. Please ensure that you use the Bulletin tab on the warranty section in VISTA to file your claim. 6 PART II: EPSU Part Number Installation 1. Prepare the helicopter for maintenance. 2. Verify part number of EPSU installed on the helicopter. a. If it is , go to step 4. b. If it is , remove EPSU (DMC-505-A A-520). c. Install EPSU (DMC-505-A A-720). 3. Remove 505 Rotorcraft Flight Manual Temporary Revision BHT-505-FM-1(TR-1) from BHT-505-FM-1 Rotorcraft Flight Manual. 4. Verify that the 505 Rotorcraft Flight Manual Temporary Revision BHT-505-FM-1 (TR- 3) REISSUE dated 27 February 2018 in BHT-505-FM-1 Rotorcraft Flight Manual is inserted. 5. Make an entry in the helicopter logbook and historical service records indicating compliance with PART II of this Alert Service Bulletin. PART III: BHT-505-FM-1 Temporary Revision 3 Cancellation. 1. Prepare the helicopter for maintenance. 2. Confirm helicopter is compliant with PART I and PART II of this ASB. 3. Insert Rotorcraft Flight Manual TR-3 Cancellation Notice into BHT-505-FM-1 Rotorcraft Flight Manual. 4. Communicate to the model 505 pilots that normal battery assisted or GPU assisted starts can be performed as per BHT-505-FM-1 Rotorcraft Flight Manual, Section 2, normal procedures. 5.
