2 About the Ratings This guide uses emission levels and fuel economy values to determine environmental scores for cars and trucks. Every vehicle listed in this guide meets federal emission and fuel economy requirements. Some larger vehicles may be exempt from fuel economy requirements. Three pieces information about a vehicle's environmental performance are presented: the, the, and the Fuel Economy estimates. Together, they give a complete picture the relative environmental performance a vehicle is expected to achieve. The scores range from 0 to 10, where 10 is best (and "best" means the lowest emissions). The scores can be used to compare all vehicles and all model years against one another. The fuel economy estimates are the same "" and "Highway" values that are posted on the window stickers new vehicles. The estimates can be used to compare the fuel economy different vehicles. Of course, your actual mileage may vary depending on driving conditions. The is based on the level pollution that produces smog and causes health problems. The score allows you to compare the expected pollution levels different vehicles. The scoring is from 0 to 10, where 10 is cleanest. The levels pollution for each vehicle are determined by the ficial EPA or California exhaust emission standards for the major pollutants in vehicle exhaust. These include nitrogen oxides (NOx) and non-methane organic gases (NMOG), which combine in the presence sunlight to create smog. They also include the health-affecting pollutants particulate matter (PM), a lung irritant, and carbon monoxide (CO), a poisonous gas. This average will increase in the next few years as EPA's new stringent "Tier 2" emission program requires cleaner cars and trucks to be sold. 3 Fuel Economy The fuel economy estimates provide the EPA miles-per-gallon and Highway values for each car and light truck. These estimates are the same as those seen on the window stickers new vehicles and in the Fuel Economy Guide published annually by EPA and DOE (available at auto dealers, public libraries, and online at These estimates are meant to be used to compare the fuel economy one vehicle to another. Of course, your actual mileage may vary depending on driving conditions. Vehicles with higher fuel economy save natural resources and create less carbon dioxide a greenhouse gas than vehicles with lower fuel economy. Every gallon gasoline burned puts 20 pounds carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. 4 Vehicle Specifications The vehicle specifications provide a description a specific configuration a vehicle model. These specifications include: engine size, number cylinders, transmission type, drive system and fuel type. A vehicles engine size, also referred to as displacement, is normally provided in units liters (3.2L = 3.2 liters) The number cylinders is another measure a vehicle's engine size. Larger, more powerful engines usually have more cylinders than smaller engines. The transmission type can be either manual or automatic. System The drive system can be 2WD, 4WD or AWD. No drive is indicated if the vehicle is AWD. Fuel Fuels available today include gasoline, diesel, ethanol, compressed natural gas (CNG), electric, and hybrid electric. Hybrid electric vehicles combine the best features internal combustion engines and electric motors. Unlike all-electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles do not need to be plugged into an external source electricity to be recharged. If no fuel is shown that vehicle configuration operates on gasoline.
