2 1.0 Introduction Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is measured as the value of goods services produced by resident producers during a particular accounting period. Quarterly GDP is measured at short time intervals of three months namely: First Quarter (January March), Second Quarter (April June), Third Quarter (July September) Fourth Quarter (October December). This highlight is for the period of July to September, Data used in the compilation of the third quarter GDP were collected from all economic activities performed in the economy for the period of July to September, The type of data collected were for production of goods services. The compilation follows the United Nation Statistics Division s guidelines on the compilation of national accounts statistics (System of National Accounts SNA 2008). 2.0 Key Findings The third quarter Gross Domestic Product at current prices in absolute terms increased to TZS 29.5 trillion from TZS 25.4 trillion attained in the corresponding quarter of Meanwhile, Gross Domestic Product at 2007 constant prices for the period under review in absolute terms increased to TZS 12.4 trillion from TZS 11.6 trillion recorded in 2016, equivalent to an increase in growth rate by 6.8 percent in (Chart 1). 3 3.0 Growth by Economic Activity During the third quarter in 2017, economic activities that increased at significant rates were mining quarrying (20.8 percent); Water Supply (19.1 percent); Information Communication (13.4 percent), Transport Storage (13.0 percent) Manufacturing (12.4 percent). Highlights of selected activities performance during the period is presented below: 3.1 Agriculture This activity includes the exploitation of vegetable animal resources, engaging in growing of crops, raising breeding of animals, harvesting of timber other plants, animals or animal products from a farm or their natural habitats. Agriculture activity value added increased to TZS 2.24 trillion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS 2.16 trillion of 2016, equivalent to a growth rate by 3.6. The growth was attributed to an increase in harvested crops, animals, logs increase in fish catch during the quarter under review Crops The major crops covered include maize, paddy, sorghum/millet, other cereals, cassava, round potatoes, sweet potatoes, other roots tubers, beans other pulses, dried oil seeds, other vegetables, bananas, other fruits, cashew nuts, coffee, cotton, tea, tobacco other food cash crops. During the period under review, crops value added increased to TZS 1.08 trillion from TZS 1.04 trillion obtained in the similar quarter of 2016, equivalent to a growth rate by 3.8 percent. The increase in growth rate was attributed to good harvest of cereal crops other crops on account of favourable weather in areas of crop production. The growth in the crop activity during the third quarter of 2017 was on account of maize production which increased by 0.9 percent from 1,517 thous tons in 2016 to 1,531 thous tons in Paddy harvested increased by 1.6 percent from 562 thous tons in 2016 to 571 thous tons 2

4 in Beans increased by 2.7 percent from 110 thous tons in 2016 to 113 thous tons in Round potatoes increased by 1.5 percent from 65 thous tons in 2016 to 66 thous tons in Sweet potatoes increased by 17.6 percent from 34 thous tons in 2016 to 40 thous tons in Chart 2: Production of Selected Crops During the third Quarter of Source: Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Fisheries, Livestock Livestock covers activities of rearing of improved indigenous cattle; goats; sheep; pigs; donkeys horses; guinea pigs rabbits; indigenous commercial chicken; other poultry. Livestock activity value added increased to TZS billion from TZS billion recorded in the third quarter of 2016, equivalent to an increase in growth rate by 2.7 percent. The growth was attributed to an increase in animals sold for slaughter increase in production of animal products such as milk skin hides observed during the period under review Forestry Logging The activity covers production of timber, charcoal, fuel wood Logs, twigs, faggots (bundle of branches) non-wood forest products. Forestry activity value added increased to TZS billion in 2017 from TZS billion in 2016, equivalent to an increase in growth rate by 5.5 percent. 3

5 The recorded growth was attributed to an increase in harvested forest products Fishing The activitiy covers the harvest of fishery resources from marine or freshwater environments, with the goal of capturing fish, crustaceans molluscs. Fishing activity value added increased to TZS billion from TZS billion attained in the third quarter of 2016, equivalent to a growth rate by 3.9 percent. The growth rate was attributed to an increase in fish catch during the period under review. 4.1 Mining Quarrying Mining Quarrying includes the activities of extraction of minerals occurring naturally as solids (coal ores), liquids (petroleum) or gases (natural gas). Extraction can be underground, on the surface mining or well operation. It also includes supplementary activities aimed at preparing the crude materials for marketing. The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the corresponding quarter of 2016, equivalent to an increase in growth rate by 20.8 percent. The growth was attributed to an increase in gas production, diamond coal. Gas production increased to meet the dem of gas for power generation which has gas consumption of up to 13 million cubic feet per day while the new established ceramic factory consumes 4 million cubic feet per day. Diamond production increased on account of mining operation done on areas of high mineral concentration as well as use of high quality processing plant. Coal production increased in the quarter under review on account of the government ban on coal imports. (Table No. 1) 4

The materials, substances, or components transformed are raw materials that are products of agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining quarrying as well as products of other manufacturing activities. The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the similar quarter of 2016, equivalent to an increase in growth rate by 12.4 percent. The increase in growth rate was mainly attributed to the production of food products specifically wheat flour; cement; textile; wood paper; chemical pharmaceuticals; electrical, transport machinery products. 4.3 Construction The activity includes general construction specialized construction activities for buildings civil engineering works. Construction activity value added increased to TZS 1.52 trillion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS 1.37 trillion in the correponding quarter of 2016, equivalent to an increase in growth rate by 11.1 percent. The growth rate was attributed to a work in progress of infrastructure projects such as the Stard Gauge Rail (SGR), TAZARA Flyover Ubungo interchange in Dar es Salaam as well as Manyoni Tabora road Mtwara Mvinata road. 5

7 4.4 Electricity Electricity supply activity covers generation, transmission distribution of electric power to the general public. Eelectricity supply value added increased to TZS billion from TZS billion recorded in 2016, equivalent to an increase of growth rate by 5.8 percent. The growth was attributed to an increased in electricity generated by gas. During the period under review, total electricity generated increased to 1,765 million kwh from 1,706 million kwh recorded in TANESCO generated 1,304 million kwh while other sources including Independent Power Plants produced 461 million kwh equivalent to 26.1 percent of total electricity generated in the quarter under review. The growth of this activity is determined mainly by the quantity of water supplied to various users during the period under review. During the reference period, quantity of water supplied increased to 82.3 million cubic meters in 2017 from 67.4 million cubic meter recorded in the similar quarter of

8 The activity value added increased to TZS 98.8 billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS 82.9 billion in the similar quarter of 2016, equivalent to an increase in growth rate of 19.1 percent. The growth rate was attributed to an increased in supplied water by water authorities on account of improved water supply infrastructure Chart 6: Quantity of Water Supplied for the Period July Sept, Data Source: EWURA, Trade Repair The activity includes wholesale retail sale (sale without transformation) of any type of goods, rendering services incidental to the sale of merchise. It also includes repair of motor vehicles installation repair of personal household goods. The activity value added increased to TZS 1.28 trillion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS 1.21 trillion in the same quarter of 2016, equivalent to a growth rate of 5.9 percent. The growth was attributed to an increase of wholesale trade retail trade from domestic production particularly agricultural manufactured products. 4.7 Transportation Storage This activity includes the provision of passenger or freight transport, whether scheduled or not, by rail, pipeline, road, water or air associated activities such as cargo hling, storage etc. The activity also includes renting of transport equipment with driver or operator postal courier activities. 7

9 The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the similar quarter of 2016, equivalent to a growth rate of 13.0 percent. The growth was attributed to a significant increase in number of passengers (including commuter buses) cargo transported by rail. The number of passenger vehicles licenced during July - September in 2017 increased to 13,357 from 12,430 licenced during the similar period in Similarly, significant increase in gas transported through pipelines from gas wells to Dar es Salaam also attributed to the growth of the activity. The amount type of supplementary services provided within this activity can vary widely. Accommodation Food Services value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the similar quarter of 2016, equivalent to a growth rate of 3.1 percent. The growth rate was attributed to an increase in number of tourist arrivals from 369,375 in the third quarter of 2016 to 388,890 in the third quarter of Information Communication The industry covers publishing activities, motion picture, video television programming production, sound recording music publishing, programming broadcasting activities. 8

10 The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the similar quarter of 2016, equivalent to a growth rate of 13.4 percent. The increase in growth was on account of airtime used by mobile phone customers the expansion of broadcasting internet services in the country Financial Intermediation Insurance The industry covers financial services activities insurance pension funding, insurance, reinsurance pension funding except compulsory social security, auxiliary to financial service insurance activities. The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the similar quarter of 2016 equivalent to a growth rate of 4.5 percent. During the period under review, credit by banks to the private sector amounted to TZS trillion Professional, Scientific Technical Activities This activity includes specialized professional, scientific technical activities. These activities require a high degree of training, make specialized knowledge skills available to users. This involves legal accounting; activities of head offices; management consultancy; architectural engineering; technical testing analysis; scientific research development; advertising market research; other professional; scientific technical veterinary activities. The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the similar quarter of 2016 equivalent to a growth rate of 7.9 percent. The growth rate was attributed to an increase in other professional, legal accounting services provided during the period of July to September, Administrative Support Services The activity includes a variety of services that support general business operations. Administrative support services involves rental leasing; 9

11 employment; travel agency; tour operator; reservation service related; security investigation; services to buildings lscape; office administrative; office support other business support activities. The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the corresponding quarter of 2016 equivalent to a growth rate of 6.8 percent. The growth rate was attributed to the performance of travel agent tour operators activities other administrative support services during the quarter Real Estate This activity includes selling or buying of real estate, renting real estate, providing other real estate services such as appraising real estate. Activities in this industry may be carried out on own or leased property may be done on a fee or contract basis. It also include building of structures, combined with maintaining ownership or leasing of such structures. The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the similar quarter of 2016 equivalent to a growth rate of 2.3 percent. The growth rate was attributed to an increase in urban population that dem houses for renting in urban areas Education This activity includes provision of education in all levels both by public private education providers. During the period under review in 2017, the activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2016 equivalent to a growth rate of 7.2 percent. The growth rate was attributed to an expansion in the enrolment of both primary secondary school pupils for 2017 as a result of the implementation of the free education policy Human Health Social Services The industry includes the provision of health social work activities such as health care provided by trained medical professionals in hospitals other facilities other residential care activities. 10

12 The growth of this activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS billion in the similar quarter of 2016 equivalent to a growth rate of 5.1 percent. The growth was attributed to an improved health services provided by both public private health facilities in the country during the period under review Other Services Activities Households as employers This industry includes the activities of membership organizations, the repair of computers, personal, household goods a variety of personal service activities not covered elsewhere in the classification. It also includes Arts, Entretainment Recreation Actitivities of Householda as employers. The activity value added increased to TZS billion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS Trillion in the corresponding quarter of 2016 equivalent to a growth rate of 5.9 percent. The growth rate was attributed to an increase of services by urban population personal service activities. 6.0 Conclusion Gross Domestic Product estimates for the period under review was compiled using data on production of goods services collected from all economic activities in the economy. The compilation follows the United Nation Statistics Division s guidelines on the compilation of national accounts statistics (System of National Accounts SNA 2008). During the period, the fastest growing activity was Mining Quarrying (20.8 percent); followed by Water Supply (19.1 percent), Information Communication (13.4 percent); Transport storage (13.0) Manufacturing (12.4 percent). The real GDP icreased from TZS 12.4 trillion in the third quarter of 2017 from TZS 11.6 trillion recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2016, equivalent to a growth rate of 6.8 percent. In accordance with GDP the release calendar, the fourt quarter release is will be disseminated 90 days after the end of the quarter. The release is expected by March,
