Safety: our first design principle. Because the Vito is built by Mercedes-Benz, you get the benefits of over 100 years of innovations and leadership in the area of vehicle safety. But don t just take our word for it. Our base model Vito has been given an ANCAP Safety Rating of 4-Stars, while a Vito fitted with optional head protecting window airbags has achieved the highest ANCAP Safety Rating available in Australia today; 5-Stars. This 5-Star rating is a first for the Australian Van Market, and the Vito is currently the only van in Australia to have achieved this outstanding result. How ADAPTIVE ESP works. This state-of-the-art, innovative safety technology helps to stabilise the vehicle in hazardous driving situations by applying a braking force to one or more wheels and adjusting the engine output as required. Equipped with Load Adaptive Control, which allows it to take account of the vehicle s load status, the system continuously processes data from a large number of sensors including the steering angle sensor, the wheel speed sensors, the lateral acceleration sensor, the longitudinal acceleration sensor and the yaw rate sensor. If necessary, it intervenes to correct the situation and actively applies the appropriate braking forces to help overcome the hazardous situation. Technology to keep you on the safest track. Standard equipment includes ADAPTIVE ESP system, which combines anti-lock braking (ABS) in combination with acceleration skid control (ASR); electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and a brake assist system (BAS). Together, these systems help improve directional stability and traction in critical situations. Working in conjunction with the Vito s powerful brake system, ABS, BAS and EBD help to keep stopping distances reassuringly short and help to ensure that the vehicle remains easy to control, even during emergency braking. New to the 2010 range is the addition of the Adaptive Brake Light warning system. In the case of emergency braking at a speed above 50km/h, the Adaptive Brake Lights are activated by the ESP system. The brake lights will flash during the emergency brake situation. The flashing brake lights give drivers following behind you greater warning in an emergency braking situation. As soon as the emergency brake situation is over, ESP will deactivate the Adaptive Brake Lights and the brake lightning becomes static as usual. If emergency braking is required at speeds of over 70km/h ESP again activates the Adaptive Brake Lights and keeps them on until the vehicle comes to a complete stop where the hazard lights will also be switched on automatically. The hazard light can then be switched off manually or the system will switch them off automatically as soon as the vehicle speed exceeds 10km/h. The safety systems described in this brochure have been developed to enhance active safety and to help van drivers devote their full attention to the situation on the road. Despite their capabilities, these innovative assistance systems cannot defy the laws of physics and do not absolve the driver of the duty to drive safely. 8 Lifesaver. Australia s Safest Van. It s no accident. At Mercedes-Benz we believe that safety is not a luxury, it s a necessity. All of our vehicles are built to meet high engineering standards. That s why the Mercedes-Benz Vito has been awarded 5-stars * by ANCAP, making it the first 5-star safety rated van in Australia. When it comes to safety, we think more is better. On the 18th August 2009 the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) announced that the Vito was the first van in Australia to achieve a 5-star * rating. The Mercedes-Benz Vito successfully passed all of the rigorous testing protocols set down by ANCAP, concluding with a side impact pole test. There are 3 types of tests that determine to the star ratings. Offset Frontal, Side Impact and a Pole Test. All the test scores are added together to produce a combined score, which in turn determines the star ratings of between one and five stars. The higher the scores awarded, the better the star rating. For a vehicle to be awarded the top possible 5-star result it must achieve a minimum combined score of 32.5 points from a maximum possible total of 37. The scoring is broken down as follows: Star Rating Min Score in front offset test Min score in side impact test Seat belt reminder bonus points (max) Pole test (max) Min combined score (inc pole test & seatbelt reminders) / / /16 8.5/ /16 4.5/ /16 1.5/ As it can been seen in the above table there can be a vast difference between each of the star ratings. For a vehicle to achieve the top-level 5-star rating, it must also be fitted with window airbags and electronic stability control, a device championed by Mercedes-Benz more than 15 years ago. ADAPTIVE ESP is an advanced safety feature fitted as standard to every new Mercedes-Benz Van sold in Australia. *Vito is rated 5-stars when fitted with optional window airbags.

The Vito is available with a choice of four Mercedes-Benz CDI diesels, designed to be powerful on the road. Our engineers have been uncompromising in their pursuit to create an engaging experience from every traffic light, at every corner and along every freeway. Now it s your turn. The CDI engines: dynamic and powerful. In the all-important low-rev range, the CDI diesel power plants offer a high degree of pulling power that makes for an engaging driving experience. These units owe their high power output and impressive torque curves peaking at 150kW and 440Nm in the top-of-the range multi-stage turbo diesel 120CDI V6 powerplant to the very latest engine architecture. The common-rail, direct-injection diesel technology features four valves per cylinder, a 1600 bar injection system and an exhaust turbocharger with a variable nozzle turbine. Good fuel economy figures complement the enhanced power and performance created by these innovative engines. All Vito engines feature an advanced electronic engine management system which communicates with the control units of the transmission and the dynamic handling systems such as ADAPTIVE ESP via a CAN data bus. The electronic immobiliser, which is standard equipment, acts directly on this control unit preventing unauthorised starting of the vehicle. Rear-wheel drive. Regardless of which high performance engine you choose, you ll be impressed by the dynamic characteristics of the Vito. A key feature of the Vito is its rear-wheel drive layout. This arrangement offers huge advantages for a van s dynamic handling properties, manoeuvrability and safety. It s a proven concept. Rear-wheel drive helps to keeps torque-steer to a minimum and helps to ensure that the handling retains its forgiving character even when the vehicle is fully laden. This becomes a important safety factor when dealing with permissible gross vehicle weight as high as 2.94t. * Rear-wheel drive also has a positive effect on Vito s turning circles at just 11.8m (compact and long models) and 12.5m (extra long model) they are reassuringly small. As well as enhancing handling, rear-wheel drive offers better climbing and traction characteristics than front-wheel drive because the driven rear axle takes the weight of the load. This characteristic is invaluable when moving off on a slope or towing a trailer. Power is nothing without control.
