7 Did you know that the first iron used by mankind, far back in prehistory, came from meteors? Cast iron was first produced in China about 550 BC, but not in Europe until the medieval period. For some, this material may evoke images of fireplaces, steam engines and bridges, but to Crofts & Assinder it s hardware. We utilise this beautiful material for our detailed and elegant ranges. The majority of our iron collections are cast using the sand cast method. The nature of sand casting lends a unique quality to the texture and feel of each individual piece, unlike products produced by die casting. A high level of detail can be translated to the material, retaining a flavour of artisan hand made quality. As well as this, pattern costs are the most economic when compared to other casting processes. We are able to brand cast iron products with letters,numbers and logos for identification purposes. 20 The New Jersey Zinc Company first developed the ZAMAK alloys in The name ZAMAK is an acronym of the German names for the metals of which the alloys are composed: Z for Zink (zinc), A for Aluminium (aluminum), MA for magnesium and K for Kupfer (copper). It is also known as ZAMAC and MAZAK in the UK. The benefits of using Zamak for Die Casting is the ability to cast many features into the casting eliminating the need for machining. We also brand our product with cast letters, numbers and logos for identification purposes. Finishes are easy to apply from electro-plating to powder coating (see page 4 for Finishes). Repeatability of dimensions when casting is consistent which is key in a high-volume manufacturing environment. 29 It appears that Brass was probably produced by accident. Smelting copper ores that contain zinc results in the creation of brass instead of copper. The Romans were apparently the first to make brass deliberately. They used brass to make coins, decorate their armour and to produce ornamental jewellery. We use a mix of sand casting and forging processes for our brass products. Forging (hot stamping) gives a superior quality casting and also delivers consistent repeatability of dimensions. Sand casting is also favoured but for smaller quantities due to labour intensity when finishing. To obtain a more rustic finish we can supply brass product unlacquered, this means the product will age through oxidization giving a lovely natural patina. The majority of our handles are metric, with dimensions given in millimetres, however we do offer appliance handles in Imperial centre fixing dimensions of 8, 12 and 18. Double fixing handles start from 16mm, 32mm, 64mm with additional incremental sizes of 32mm being added where applicable. All products are tapped M4 with a minimum depth of 5mm. Dimensions of cast iron, ceramic and glass hardware may vary due to the manufacturing process. How are your products packed? Individual handles are poly-bagged complete with an M4x25mm screw. Box quantities range from pieces depending upon the size of the product and we offer boxed quantities only. For non-standard packaging and alternative screw lengths please contact the sales office on (0) /6363/4388. How can I hear about new developments in your Company?
