All other unoverprinted stamps were unauthorised but were openly accepted for postage. Occasional commercial usage of Australian stamps overlapped the GRI Period and extended even well into the NWPI Period] 68 CL B Lot registered cover to Sydney with 2d & 3d cancelled with central 'Simpsonhafen/(Deutsch Neu-Guinea)' h/s (Powell #50; rated F) used at Rabaul, endorsed "From JG Nicholls/O.N.134" on the reverse, 'REGISTERED/20NO14A/SYDNEY NSW' arrival b/s, three vertical folds. Registered mail in this earliest period is rare. The cover is addressed to leading Sydney dealer Fred Hagen and doubtless contained a consignment of 'G.R.I.' Overprints. Usage of the unauthorised 3d is most unusual, especially this early in the period. Powell recorded two covers with #P50, both with Sydney b/s of 20NO14. 2, C B Lot cover to Melbourne via Sydney (b/s of DE ) endorsed "Garrison Duty/Herbertshohe" at top & "HGreaves/No 7" at base, with 1d pair centrally cancelled with superb strike of the straight-line 'Herbertshöhe' handstamp (Powell #11) in violet, a couple of ironed-out folds & repaired at the base where opened a bit roughly. 1, C C Lot (late) usage of German PPC ("Neu-Pommern Bismarck Archipel" - native groups) to Sydney endorsed "Garrison Duty/Rabaul Pass" at upper-left & "no stamps available" at upper-right which is obscured by a 1d adhesive tied by straight-line 'Rabaul' handstamp (Powell #51; rated E) in violet, rounded corners and some soiling. Mail from the troops often originated outside of Rabaul but was processed there for on-forwarding. Rabaul Pass is several kilometres from the main township. 750

2 Prestige Philately - The Tim Rybak Collection Page: 2 NEW GUINEA - Australian Stamps Used in New Guinea (continued) 71 C B Lot (Dec) commercial cover to Sydney with 'Hamburgische Südsee-Aktiengesellschaft/Hauptfilie Rabaul' imprint at top and typed "Per SS Morinda", correctly franked with perf 'OS' ½d (fault at lower-left) & 2d paying the civilian rate & cancelled on arrival with 'DELIVERY ROOM/15DE14 B/GPO/SYDNEY' cds, Sydney b/s of the same date in red, horizontal fold. Mail posted aboard ship was often uncancelled until arrival at the first major port. Such mail was also usually not censored. We cannot recall any similar cover from the early Occupation Period. Certainly there was not one in the "Bismarck" Collection. 2, C B Lot cover to Sydney with 1d only tied by 'RABAUL/NOV *' datestamp (Powell #49c) in violet & overstruck with poor Sydney machine cancel, endorsed "From/Lt Col Paton/OC Rabaul" at lower-left, minor blemishes & repaired tear across the flap. [The 1d soldier's rate was not extended to officers so the cover should have been paid at the civilian rate of 2½d] 1, C B Lot unstamped commercial cover to Brisbane endorsed on the reverse "opened & passed by/censor GWM Sergt/Rabaul " and resealed by him with three blue/white embossed 'KAISERL DEUTSCHE POSTAGENTUR/[eagle]' seals, very fine straight-line 'Rabaul' h/s (Powell #51; rated E) in violet & superb strike of the rare German-type 'T'-in-octagon h/s, opened a bit roughly & a tear across the flap has been repaired. [Rare usage of the tax h/s in the Australian Occupation period] Most unstamped covers in this earliest period of the Occupation are "On Active Service" mail from Australian troops. If these were charged the 1d deficiency - and they often weren't - it was invariably at the point of arrival. This cover is remarkable for being of non-military origin and as such it was taxed at the point of origin. However, the postage due was apparently not collected in Queensland, where the postal staff probably assumed it was from a soldier. 2,500

[A similar commercial - ie non-garrison - cover (with horizontal & vertical folds) similarly cancelled - Ex "Bismarck" - sold for $2352 (2003)] 3, C A- Lot philatelic cover to England via Sydney (b/s) with 3d Roo perf Small 'OS' tied by Rabaul cds, German 'Rabaul/(Deutsch-Neuguinea)' registration label (defective) and an excellent strike of the 'T.'-in-octagon h/s (though the postage due was apparently not collected), light strike of the scarce 'Passed by Censor/RABAUL' h/s in violet C B Lot 76 USAGE OF GERMAN NEW GUINEA STAMPS: 1915 commercial "runner mail" cover to Queensland with rare Occupation period franking of DNG 10pf uncancelled and the cover endorsed "5d/To pay" in red at upper-left, largely very fine strike on the reverse of the rare 'CENSORED/by/District Officer/Morobe. New Guinea' cachet in violet, the stamp cancelled in transit with the 'IOMA/17APR15/PAPUA' cds, 'SAMARAI ED/3MAY15/PAPUA' transit b/s & 'PASSED CENSOR/ 17MY15/BRISBANE' cds in red on the face, a few mostly minor blemishes. However, we have seen illustrations of 3 different items (including a vertical strip of 3!) all with the printer's guide-marks at top in the margin, proving they are from three different sheets.
