1 Prestige Philately - Auction No 168 Page: Postal Cards for the Visit of the American "Great White Fleet" We are pleased to present the complete collection of Postal Stationery formed by Hugh Freeman of Sydney. The cards were so attractive that most were retained unused as souvenirs of the event. Commercially used examples are concequently very scarce to rare. The visit of the American Fleet to Sydney and Melbourne attracted enormous publicity and generated the largest crowds ever assembled to that time. 1 P A+ Lot 1 Proof derived from the NSW design but with the heading re-set with 'NEW SOUTH WALES' removed and the admonition amended to remove the perverse advice that the reverse could be used for the message, and 'STAMP'-within-box printed at upper-right. Superb! A highly significant item and stated to be the only recorded example. [The decision to issue cards for each of the "smaller" States was made at the eleventh hour. A single printing was made and the 1d stamp for the relevant State was printed over the 'STAMP' box. The NSW cards had obviously been printed before this or the erroneous admonition would surely have been corrected on those also. With copy of an official letter of 7/7/1908 that states "Herewith proof of Fleet Post Card, Sydney edition. The back of this proof is left blank..." The letter may relate to this item] 5, PS A Lot 17 SOUTH AUSTRALIA: 1d red HG 9, unused. [Harry Lower's very fine example sold for $2990 at our auction of 12/5/2007, but Jeff Harris's larger example sold for only $1322 at our auction of 24/10/2009. The Robson Lowe Encyclopaedia states that this is a watermark error. In the catalogue for the John Griffiths collection, it was stated that this was a trial printing on the paper to be used for the new De La Rue 2d SG 152, issued in August Whatever the case, it is an underrated stamp, partly because it's hidden away in the Star Watermark issue. Very scarce multiple. SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Official Stamps - Departmental Overprints We are pleased to introduce the collection formed by Rodney Attwood of Adelaide. This is the seventh significant offering of these fascinating stamps that we have been privileged to present, including the collections of Les Munn (15/5/2004), "Sir Humphrey" (8/10/2005), Harry Lower (12/5/2007), Victor Bullock (1/9/2007) & Frederick Hall (9/2/2008). Bidders should be mindful that defective sheets were often used for overprinting, resulting in many Departmentals being poorly centred, often exhibiting irregular or trimmed perforations, separation faults etc. Fine examples are thus the exception rather than the rule: those graded 'B' or even 'C' are generally at least average quality for the particular type. Until Stanley Gibbons properly lists and assigns values to these stamps they will remain grossly undervalued. Our estimates are conservative, based on our previous results, to which mention is made where appropriate. Please note that stamps Perf 11½-12½ are noted as "Perf 11½" for brevity. 1,000 Ex Lot O The annotated balance of the collection with 35 different users represented including Red Overprints x21 & Blue Overprints x9, many fine examples and a number of highly rated but defective stamps, some minor duplication, condition very mixed. An opportunity to embark on a challenging new adventure or simply to fill many gaps without breaking the bank. (128) 1,000

54 Prestige Philately - Auction No 168 Page: 54 SOUTH AUSTRALIA - NORTHERN TERRITORY POSTMARKS We are pleased to offer the collection formed by John Forrest from England. "The Territory" is our Wild West: In 1871 there were 201 whites in an area larger than New South Wales, compared with South Australia's population of 185,000. By 1883 the white population had swelled to 2000, but the effects of recession two decades later caused this figure to be halved by 1908! Growth thereafter was steady but even in 1954, at 16489, it was still less than 10% of South Australia's population 70 years earlier! Thus it should be understood that most post offices were both remote and little utilised. Very little postal history has survived and most datestamps even on stamp or piece are rare. It is a highly challenging collecting field. However, the small collector base means that most NT material is grossly undervalued relative to its rarity. This then is an opportunity for new entrants who don't have unlimited resources. It is noteworthy that 2011 marks the centenary of the Northern Territory being transferred (on ) from South Australian to Commonwealth control. References are from "The Postal History of the Northern Territory" by Ed Williams, and "Squared Circles..." by Overton. Despite us having sold the Northern Territory collections formed by Phil Collas, Monica Comrie (NZ), John Bell & Victor Bullock, there are a number of markings included here that we have never before offered. Ex Lot SDC The annotated balance of the collection with many better items including squared-circles from 'ALICE SPRINGS' (both types on cover), 'ANTHONYS LAGOON', 'ARLTUNGA' (7, including a poor strike on cover), 'BORROLOOLA', 'BROCKS CREEK' (4), 'BURRUNDIE' single & two part-strikes on cover), 'KATHERINE' (2), 'TOP CAMP' (poor strike on cover), 'UNION TOWN' & 'WINNECKE' on defective cover, a good range of later material including scarce types. However, he has formed a number of quality studies of other Victorian subjects and we are pleased to present several of them here. 809 PS C Lot 809 THE ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH: 1889 South Australian 1d Postal Card from Port Germein to the Victorian PMG complaining about delay of a telegram & requesting a refund of the 4/- he was required to pay on delivery, endorsed on the face that enquiries should be directed to the PMG Adelaide, some soiling. A most unusual item. 200 LITERATURE Most of the books offered here are the best references on the various subjects covered. As a group, they represent an excellent basis for a serious library of Australian Colonies/States titles. The majority are in new or in as-new condition. The estimates are deliberately conservative: for those books that are in-print titles, the estimates are generally half the retail prices. The auction catalogues include some of the greatest collections ever formed of Australian Colonies material. Several of the catalogues are rarities in their own right L A "The Revenue Stamps of South Australia" (2006) & "The Parcel Stamps of South Australia" (2008) both by Martin Walker; "Revenue & Railway Stamps of Tasmania" by Craig & Ingles (1978); and "Handbook of Victorian Revenue Stamps" by Bill Craig (1999). Prestige Philately retail $78. A truly exceptional sale. AUCTION CATALOGUES: Harmers (Sydney) "The ER Slade-Slade Collection: South Australia & Western Australia" (29/11/1979), with p/r. AUCTION CATALOGUES: Harmers (Sydney) "The Hamilton Collection of Australian States" (6/10/1980) including 200 lots of mainly unused/mint South Australian Departmentals!, with p/r. 40T 15T 10T 1060 L A Lot 1060 AUCTION CATALOGUES: Christies Robson Lowe (London) for John O Griffiths' "South Australia" (3/6/1992), with p/r. 10

62 Prestige Philately - Auction No 168 Page: 62 LITERATURE (continued) 1074 L A Lot 1074 SOUTH AUSTRALIA: "The Postage Stamps of South Australia" compiled by a committee comrpising Messrs FC Krichauff, AE Fryar, WL Peck & FRC Frost with assistance from Rev James Mursell, and edited by NR James assisted by AGH Briskham (undated, c.1950), 128pp hardbound. Given all the notable personages engaged in this production, tis little wonder it was delayed for a number of years - they blamed WWII - & perhaps a miracle that it appeared at all, and not a sign of camel hair anywhere. A very scarce book, in remarkably fine condition. [A very fine copy sold for $260 in our on-line literature auction No 3] L A 1076 L A Lot 1075 SOUTH AUSTRALIA: "South Australia: The Long Stamps " by JRW Purves (1978), 212pp hardbound.
